Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

Listened to the album a few times. Pretty damn solid album. So far:

1. Handy - fun little parody, but seems cut short. Is Fancy like that?
2. Lame Claim to Fame - Great original. Love the Kevin Bacon bit. Also like the "Camel Walk" inspired/pseudo cover music.
3. Foil - genius. Love it. 2 verses, that's it? Feels super short as well.
4. Sports Song - Good fun & creative original, but I'm not sure how often I'll want to hear marching band music.
5. Word Crimes - AWESOME. Al going all 'Schoolhouse Rock' on us. Probably my 2nd favorite track.
6. My Own Eyes - no thoughts, I generally skip it. I need to listen to it a few more times.
7. Now that's what I call Polka - gotta be honest, I usually skip the polka tracks, but this one is fantastic.
8. Mission Statement - Agree with Obi-Wan Jabroni, great concept just not very good. Love the retro vibe though.
9. Inactive - #1 track, IMO. Funny beginning to end. Love every bit of it.
10. First World Problems - Funny original but not very catchy
11. Tacky - Very fun, but still super catchy due to how catchy the original is.
12. Jackson Park Express - Kinda like Mission Statement, good concept, but not all that great.

If this is accurate, Al not only claimed the #1 spot, but he did so by a massive margin of 20,000 albums!

The normal Fancy track ends with a bit of an outro that is literally "Who dat? Who dat? I-G-G-Y" over and over again. It's a worthwhile cut.

If anyone cares Weird Al about to be on Bill Handel show on KFI here in SoCal.

Fire up "iHeartRadio" app and go to KFI am 640 or I think you can listen through the web.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

It's official... Al is number one!
http://www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-200

Also, "Word Crimes" cracked the Top 40 at #39. That actually makes it his fourth highest charting single behind "White & Nerdy" (#9), "Eat It" (#12), and "Smells Like Nirvana" (#35).

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

I have a hard time believing that this will really be his last traditional album after it debuts at #1.

I can see that, but there's also something to be said about going out on top. Besides, he's right that he just needs to focus on singles as they hit rather than waiting for a solid 12 every few years.

Yep, and I think he realized that.

Maybe now he can focus his attention on a UHF sequel.

Funny you should mention it:

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

If Al did a modern sequel to UHF, where would his channel reside? Roku?

Actually, a straight-up sequel, taking place immediately after the first one, would be hilarious. Bring everyone back (that isn't dead or batshit crazy...) and just pretend that they haven't aged.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

The main problem I have with Al only releasing digital singles in the future is how this will affect his original songs. I like some of his originals more than the parodies on some albums. I can't imagine John Q. Public purchasing a Weird Al non-parody on iTunes. That's what is so great about the traditional albums.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

If the "UHF" sequel took place in the real world, Kevin McCarthy's character would come back and buy the station after relaxed FCC laws allowed him to own 2 stations in the same market, and he'd turn it into a Fox or CW affiliate and run infomercials in the off-hours

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

This will not be a popular opinion, and I'm glad that Al is #1 after all this time (and I am a super fan, I begged my parents to take me to see him when I was 8!!) but I have to say this overall is one of his weakest albums. I think there was more of an emphasis on silly quickly produced videos than actual songwriting. There is nothing on this anywhere near stuff like White and Nerdy, Ricky, Beverly Hillbillies, Fat, Dare to be Stupid, Smells Like Nirvana, Yoda, etc. Really, Word Crimes is probably the best song on the record. The rest is just meh. I think Alpocalypse was much better. Still, I am happy for his mainstream success. Hopefully this keeps him going a bit longer.

It's not my favorite Al-bum, but it's still pretty damn good. I'd probably rank it somewhere in the middle of his discography.

Re: The Weird Al Yankovic Appreciation Thread

Listened to a lot of his box set on a road trip today and I'd have to disagree. A lot of those older songs just don't hold up for me. I love the new album however.

Part of that, especially with his parodies, probably depends on your general taste in music.

I'd argue that Bad Hair Day is his most consistent and best album for me, given what I was listening to in 1996 and what I still listen to today. Same goes for Running with Scissors, although some of that is because that was the first tour I saw him live and met him in person.

I listen to a lot of New Wave and 80s music in general, so his older albums still hold up to me.

I'd put Alapalooza, Poodle Hat, and Polka Party at the bottom of the list, though. Between the parodies themselves and the originals, I'd say those are "the worst" (as in the albums of his I listen to least).

I like "Poodle Hat" because I saw him on the tour for that album. "Hardware Store" & "Trash Day" are great, but "Why does this always happen to me?" kills me every single time I listen to it.

I don't listen to all of "Alapalooza" much, but I seriously can't get enough of "Frank's 2000" TV". And "Bedrock Anthem" is choice quoting whenever "Give it Away" comes on the radio.

But "Albuquerque" is the greatest song ever recorded.

Whoa- instant purchases there. Wonder if The Compleat Al will include the copyright warning spoof that was on the VHS?

You can stop that speculation train you had going above:

I wrote a script for a Cartoon Network made-for-tv movie a few years ago. We had a deal and everything. We were getting ready to go into pre-production and the whole thing just fell apart. It taught me to never talk about things until they happen. I'm working on a few things now I'm not ready to talk about them. But if the right opportunity presents itself, I would love another shot at making a movie."

I still think that one of his best parody was the one of James Blunt called "You are Pitiful". I believe James Blunt's record company wouldn't let him release the single for some reason.

Yeah, that was the deal. But he had gotten permission from James Blunt himself and had already recorded it, so he put it up for free on his website.

This petition to have Al play the Super Bowl halftime show has already collected over 30,000 signatures, and is drawing media attention. I do not believe for a second that the NFL will react to it, but it's fun, I signed it.

I would absolutely love this, but it will never happen. Maybe on stage as a back-up guitarist like he did for The Pixies recently.

I wonder what happened with the petition to get him on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (why he's not yet is still kind of surprising).
