I don't know if this is quite what this thread is about but, I just got done watching three seasons of The L-Word on DVD. I recognized Leisha Hailey, who plays Alice, as one of the "This is good" Yoplait yogurt girls ("This is shoe shopping for chocolate covered heels good", etc.). I then looked her up on the internet and found out she was also half of the band The Murmurs. They had some noterity with a cover of "White Rabbit" and the songs "You Suck" and "La-Di-Da" in the 90s. I owned a few of their CDs for 10 years give or take and never connected her with them before.
Also, I remember seeing the video for "Joey" by Concrete Blonde in 1990 and thinking that Johnette Napolitano was Ann Wilson from Heart. I kept watching the video and wondering why her sister wasn't in the video until it got to the end and I realized that it was an entirely different band. |

Their usual response - believe it or not - would be "That's a girl singing?" (on the 4 Non Blondes tune, that is). |

as for me, i just realized the other day that "showdown" is actually an ELO song. i had always thought they were exclusively bombastic and orchestral |

I can always tell when someone is more what I would term a "casual music listener" because they often do confuse one artist's sound with another - where as I tend to hear all the differences, instead of the similarities. To me, there is just no way I would confuse sub genres of music (say Brit Pop and Alt Rock for instance), while the average guy would say "sounds all the same to me".
And because of this, I would likely get a barrage of crap from my friends if I was wrong about something, too - as they always expect me to know everything. One of those "You, don't know?!" kind of deals. But in my years of working in a music store, I've heard some good one's now and then. I'm continually amazed at how many people think Aretha Franklin sang "Rescue Me."

"Baseball" by Ozma.
I was so convinced it was a Weezer b-side, I included it on a mix-CD of Weezer B-sides. Now that I do know, I'm still relunctant to remove it. |

 Hence the "No Offense" part, as it's not my intent to ridicule anybody, either. Just stating that I've never encountered the problem. If I wanted to ridicule someone, I'd just flat out say something along the lines of "people were all a bunch of idoits" - then I could see where you might have a point in thinking I might have insulted anyone. However, since that was not my intent, and I started with a discalimer, thought that would pretty much clear up any misconceptions. But, that's one of the lovely things of communicating via posts, instead of real conversation. Things tend to get lost in translation. |
When I first got into KISS I thought Ace sang "Cold Gin" but it was Gene.

Geddy Lee isn't a woman? :sarcasm: Oh, and I always thought "stuck in the middle" by stealers wheel was bob dylan, I was surprised because I really liked it and not much of a dylan fan. |

I have never once confused Eddie Vedder with Scott Sap. I have never cared for Creed, but really like Pearl Jam, and even when I did not "know" Creed, never confused once. |

Also, It wouldn't be just because of the singers, either. The actual band members (musicians) play with different styles altogther. There's a pretty big difference, as far as I'm concerend, with the overall quality of musicianship and music between Pearl Jam and Creed. One band helped originate a sound, the other is simply copying it. |
Every Steve Miller Band song except "Abracadabra". I saw the commercial for his "Young Hearts" album and was like WOW, I didn't know he sang all those. I went out and picked that album out the next day.

Found out recently that "Corporal Clegg" was written and performed by Roger Waters. Sure sounded like a Syd joint to me!

This isn't the kind of thing that ever really happens to me either. I do every now and then have the "Gee that singer sounds a lot like _____, but I don't think it is" and occasionly it was _____.
I can often tell guitarists just by their guitar tone when I haven't heard the song before which is cool and a little bit scary. |

... The ones that throw me (at least the 1st few times you hear them) are pronounced breaks in tempo and production from previous songs like 'Drive' by the Cars, 'I'm Your Captain' by Grand Funk, or 'Sister Christian' by Night Ranger. tjs |
"That's All" by Phil Collins, or lead vocals by Collins when he was in Genesis.
I remember hearing that song when I was a week kid, in my parent's car. And it just doesn't strike me as Phil "You're in My Heart" Collins. (And I was aware of his other earlier hits, like "In the Air Tonight", "Sussudio", etc... It still doesn't strike me as a Phil song. Like it's too cool for him.) |
Despite information to the contrary, I am still convinced that Tony Rich is an alter ego for Babyface. :)
