(new) Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead (dec 19)

it leaked today.

he flips some old school songs, like I aint no Joke by Rakim.

its pretty damn good. notable tracks:

Money over bullshit
Where are they now
Black Republicans feat. Jay-Z
Not Going Back

its much better than his last couple albums. actually, its nas' best album since It Was Written.

PJsig08 12-07-06 02:23 PM

Can't wait to hear it...

EdTheRipper 12-07-06 08:29 PM

So far I've heard the title track and Black Republicans. Good stuff! I'm looking forward to hearing more.

Tarantino 12-08-06 02:19 AM

I'm loving it.

"Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead"

I hope Nas is right.

:crap:

I haven't picked up a new Nas album since Nastradamus. Those two terrible albums in a row pretty much killed it for me. I heard his singles and they were OK, but those earlier albums were so bad that I was scared to ever give him money again in case he repeated it.

I might give this one a chance.

spainlinx0 12-08-06 09:16 AM

I like the radio single so I'll give this one a shot on the weekend.

I thought God's Son was pretty solid. There were a lot of good tracks on Street's Disciple too (along with some filler). Haven't heard anything off of the new album yet. I'll try to find some song samples before it comes out.

PJsig08 12-08-06 03:58 PM

Wha?

Stillmatic and God's Son were both great. Street's Disciple was alright.

Check out The Lost Tapes also: http://www.amazon.com/Lost-Tapes-Nas/dp/B00006IGU3

Stillmatic and God's Son were alright in my opinion. Both showed flashes of brilliance (One Mic is the best song of Nas' career and one of the best in hip hop), but were inconsistant. Street's Disciple was different. I keep going back to it because I know that there is a great album buried somewhere in the massive tracklist (War is the highlight). After a couple of listens, I really like Hip Hop Is Dead. It's one of the best concept albums I've heard in a long time (which is high praise because most hip hop concept albums fall short of their goals) and Black Republican with Jay is absolute gem of pure majesty (with Nas slightly coming out on top, if I were to keep score.) Blunt Ashes is a very intelligent meditation on the history drug abuse throughout the history of black music. The two part "Hip Hop Is Dead" and "Who Killed It" is very ambitious and I'm still trying to digest it all, but overall, this album is a great bookend to Jay's Kingdom Come as hip hop's aging twin towers release back to back solid albums.

So I guess based on the title there's no reason to buy this

Digital Groove 12-08-06 04:17 PM

Stillmatic is easily his 3rd best album of his career.

Wait til you guys hear "Who Killed It" hahahaha

PJsig08 12-08-06 06:28 PM

I'd put it

Illmatic
Hip Hop is Dead
Stillmatic
God's Son

Street's Disciple is a tough one, just because there's a lot of fluff in those 2 discs.

I love you, cungar (but in a totally hetero way, lol).

kurupt 12-09-06 05:44 AM

I'd rank It Was Written (as unexpectedly commercial as it was) ahead of Stillmatic and God's Son.

Digital Groove 12-09-06 04:06 PM

Illmatic is easily his best album

It Was Written is his 2nd best album.

Stillmatic 3rd,

the rest are a mixture, Nastradamus being his worst.

Is Hip Hop is Dead the track censored on the CD? I checked out the leak to see if it was worth a purchase, but the track's hook and verses are edited while the other tracks aren't.

Yes it is. I picked up the cd today and was quite disappointed with that. :(

spainlinx0 12-20-06 01:10 PM

It really is sad because the track's hook is really disjointed with the editing. I can't stand the way it is put together. I don't understand the logic behind a move like that.

I couldn't agree with you more. Editing the chorus like that kind of throws the whole flow of it off. I'd be curious to know the reasoning for the edit.

Da Thrilla 12-26-06 07:27 PM

My fav. thus far is "Black Republican" with Jay-Z. The beat is beyond excellent, and Nas kills it of course, more so than his counterpart.

Daryl 12-29-06 04:22 PM

I've been lukewarm on Nas' albums after Illmatic (they always had a few good/great songs, but fell short as complete albums, with Stillmatic being the "best of the rest") - but Hip Hop Is Dead is a damn good album that quickly claims the #2 spot behind Illmatic, IMO. In terms of the big fall releases, Jay's album was good but not great, same with Snoop, I liked Game's joint a lot, but HHID trumps them all. The lyrics don't do much for me on "Black Republican" but the beat and the hook keep me coming back to it time and time again. Still Dreamin' and Not Going Back are great, and even a song that I didn't like on first listen, Can't Forget About You, has got a hold on me.
