two CDs arrived today (from damfino and maxfisher). Opening packages now...

maxfisher:
Spoiler:

nice packaging! I like the little story about the two gas stations. It seems to really set the mood for what is about to come. I didn't look at the tracklist. I'll be popping in the first disc very soon!

damfino:
Spoiler:

I really like the fact that this is a tribute to a college radio station. I didn't look at the tracklist for this either. Sounds like it'll be something I'll want to hear in my car.

yay! I'm excited. And I feel bad that I didn't include a tracklist or artwork with my mix. Oh well, the tracklist WILL be posted here soon. I've just been far too busy to do it lately.

look4sheep, your mix has officially been woven into my office music rotation. Most of the songs have that perfect blend of silly energy that I need while working (Track #9 is too much fun). Thanks again for the contribution.

I guess I wasn't the only one to take a holiday from posting.

I have been listening though and now that I'm back to my routine, I have 2 more mini-reviews...

cusm
Spoiler:
This could have come from my collection except that I only own 9 of the tracks, but there's some great stuff here from familiar artists that I don't follow. I must confess that I also associate Ween with "Push the Little Daisies" and as a result I haven't paid much attention to them. "Baby Bitch" is a great song. I will be buying this CD. Also, I was a Minutemen fan back in the day, but I never really got into fIREHOUSE and as a result I haven't paid much attention to Mike Watt's solo career. this too will change since I also loved "Against The 70s". Overall, I'd have to say that this is my favorite mix so far!

das Monkey's "Show Me The Way"
Spoiler:
Based on earlier warnings, I wasn't expecting to hear Hawaiian music on track one. Despite my alt rock bias, I do have Hawaiian friends and I've learned to enjoy some Hawaiian artists. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is greatly missed.
Mixing IZ with Sinatra, James Darren, R.E.M., Live and assorted Jazz made for a soothing mix that I will return to when the mood strikes me. I wouldn't have expected these artists to go so well together.

Can anybody confirm that they at least received mine?

Thanks!

I might at some point post some reviews/thoughts. It depends when I get the energy to sit down and listen. I might try two a week or something...

Thanks for the feedback, Damfino. I've been wondering if anyone would ever get around to posting some more reviews. I'll certainly contribute whenever I receive my CDs.

Oh, and I should say that I didn't receive everybody's disc before I left, so when I get around to posting reviews, don't be surprised if some are missing. You might see a thread revival in a year when I finally get the rest on a visit home.

Review:

cerulean

Spoiler:
This is a very good mix and would've fit in nicely with my staple listening pleasures a few years ago. For the most part, the songs flow nicely together having a similarly set tone and feel. It also gave me a name to fit to some songs I'd heard before (The Orange Peels' "Circling the Sun", in particular) but which I'd never bothered to look up before.

The biggest (and only real) disruption to the flow is the Bjork song - as much as I love Bjork, her song throws a wrench in the flow for me. The style isn't the same - not a guitar to be heard and mostly electronic, which doesn't match with pretty much the rest of the mix. Plus, it immediately follows the upbeat, forward-moving Orange Peels song with its slow-moving, off-kilter mood. I love the song, but it simply doesn't fit. I think it would've stood a better chance if it was next to the Imogen Heap song.

It was evident that cerulean was trying for a flow and it worked, with that one exception. The choices of songs are not the most obvious for each artist, which is also a plus (kudos for the Radiohead b-side inclusion). I was surprised to hear the Indigo Girls pop up, but they fit the flow. I love the Alison Krauss song.

A great mix overall.

This thread seems to have died, despite many of the mail mixes not getting a single review (including mine). I'll keep updating as I give them good listens, but I'm still in the internet only ones. Once I finish with the four of those I have, I'll go onto the mail mixes.

Review:

Cosmic Bus - Gaining a Good Harbor
Spoiler:
This mix is very mellow and I enjoy it a lot. A big plus for me is that I haven't heard of and/or heard many of these artists before. A big minus for me is that I now have to go about finding more by most of them! It also helps that my music preference recently is trending toward more mellow, singer-songwriter type music.

I like Aereogramme's song at the front, as it prepares the listener for the mood of the upcoming mix. I think I've heard the Catfish Haven song before, but if so, I don't know where I might have. It's also well ordered so that just when the mix is in danger of slowing down too much, a well placed song lifts it back up a little - I'm thinking of the Gotye song in particular as the drum line is a definite pick me up after the slow, but beautiful, Phelan Sheppard song.

I like the "Age of Consent" cover - it's particularly apropos for me since I only just discovered the original version thanks to the Marie Antoinette trailer.

A great mix overall. Get's my

Yeah I think the holiday season really slowed things down. I have a stack of them to go thru and hopefully this weekend I will be able to make my way thru some of them.

A heavy post-holiday work load has kept my posting down, but at least I've been able to listen to most of them and now I can comment on 2 more...

DrRingDing's Schizophrenic Flo, I'm of Many Minds / With Flo, My Heart Breaks
Spoiler:
Part 1: This is what this project is all about! Monty Python to Louis Armstrong and The Beatles. This mix was all over the place and I love that someone finally brought in some reggae.
Part 2: The 2nd disc didn't work as well for me. Perhaps too much of the same type of music, I did love the Martha Wainwright track though.

auto's Automix
Spoiler:
Like cusm you've put together a nice mix of alternative rock featuring artists that I don't follow that closely and there's a repeat of my favorite discovery of the project so far (Ween's "Baby Bitch"). A near perfect fit for my collection, thanks.

Hey, I just caught this thread, and I'd LOVE to send out my own mix-CD to people and get feedback.

I can't seem find any sort of rules and procedures.

Can I still take part? If so, how?

The first round of CDs and online mixes went out about six weeks ago, so I would think you'll probably need to wait until there's another round, assuming there is one.

I am still combing through the first round mixes myself, and currently listening to SomethingMore's discs. Observations to come on all the mixes I've received soon.

When the next one comes around, I want in.

Slop, I just stumbled upon this thread, too. Maybe if there's enough new people who want to get in, we can start a new one soon.

Re: The Music Talk Mixtapes: Reviews & Impressions

I lost these years ago but if anyone still has the tracklists, they would be great to recreate on Spotify, Apple Music, or Tidal. (jk no one uses Tidal).

Re: The Music Talk Mixtapes: Reviews & Impressions

^ I have a handful of them (I was sure I had more than five... an earlier post confirms I had one from maxfisher and damfino... but I never did get all of them in the mail; some may have been lost on their way across the border). Typos below are (mostly) my own. I'm tagging each person whose discs I found, in case they want to reminisce about them.

You can use these lists to put together Spotify playlists if you like.

ENJOY!
Spoiler:
In the early 1990's Ian MacKaye of Fugazi once said the reason they charged $5 for their gigs was that it allowed for them to suck. Well of all the times I saw them live I never complained. I am in no way comparing my track selections to a Fugazy gig, but I feel the sheer volume provides me "wiggle room" for suck-age. Quantity over quality, I love all the tracks I've selected. You might not... but you have 3 discs from me, so my mistakes are "free to suck."

If you're ever in Los Angeles bring disc 1. with you, to listen to while you're stuck in our famous mind numbing traffic. This disc is my therapy. Trust me, the driver next to you will be envious when they see you rockin' out. Disc 2, is pretty self explanatory... artists, I like doing cover versions of songs I like. Some interpretations are more bizarre than others. Disc 3, well this might be the most controversial disc of the bunch... Christmas music! If you hate it, don't celebrate it, or have complete and utter disdain for this time of year, please give this disc to someone you think will enjoy it... but I hope that person is you. Until next time have fun!

I didn't have any particular theme in mind when compiling this, I simply picked out songs that I liked and wanted others to hear, hence the name. Looking for flow and coherency may end in failure. I have no idea how much of this will be familiar to you all, but hopefully you'll all find something of worth. In any event, at least it didn't cost you anything but your time. I have somewhat detailed notes about the tracks and/or performers; maybe I'll post them on DVD Talk if anyone is interested?

Killing is a cheating lover. Obsessing over an unrequited love. Questioning God's silence. Wallowing in self-doubt and loneliness. Hating your family to the point of ending the bloodline. As Peter Griffin would say, "Ooooh, you are dark."

My mix is a compilation of Sad Bastard Music. Or, as one of my co-workers labeled it, selections from my CryPod. I didn't add any songs by Morrissey, the Smiths, Depeche Mode, or Nine Inch Nails because that would be too easy. Although, I did limit myself to one Gerald Collier song.

(By the way, this is by no means a cry from help from me. I'm completely well-adjusted. )

Re: The Music Talk Mixtapes: Reviews & Impressions

I kept all of mine in a Case Logic binder and I made playlists out of all of them a long time ago. I also still have the insert I included with my CD with my comments and the track list...

Spoiler:

“The Rock Avenue” (Remembering 91.5 KUNV)

In the spring of 1998, UNLV regents pulled the plug on “The Rock Avenue” programming on the university’s radio station and replaced it with a mostly jazz format on the grounds that the student supported college rock format wasn’t making enough money. Like public broadcasting, KUNV is non-commercial radio and relies on grants and listener contributions for its operating budget. Unfortunately, college students generally can’t afford to contribute and the station didn’t have enough listeners like myself who would contribute. This was the end for the best rock station in Las Vegas. Back in the 80s and early 90s, KUNV was a place where you could hear both well-known alternative acts as well as unknowns. Here is my tribute to “The Rock Avenue”. Every track was played on KUNV and that is where I first heard most of them...

1. Viva Las Vegas / Dead Kennedys
2. Creep / Radiohead
3 . Monkey Gone To Heaven / The Pixies
4. The Hurdy Gurdy Man / Butthole Surfers
5. Kool Thing / Sonic Youth
6. Punk Rock Girl / The Dead Milkmen
7. Jesus Built My Hot Rod / Ministry
8. Television / The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy
9. Green Haze / Elvis Hitler
10. Time Bomb / Rancid
11. Safari / The Breeders
12. The Wanderer / U2 with Johnny Cash
13. Stop / Jane’s Addiction
14. Detachable Penis / King Missile
15. Earache My Eye / Rollins Band
16. Bitchin’ Camaro / The Dead MIlkmen
17. Institutionalized / Suicidal Tendencies
18. Ode To My Car / Adam Sandler
19. Industry Corporate / Consolidated
20. Hey Jill / The Strawberry Zots

I'll try to dig out my 'master' copy and do a Spotify playlist this week.

Re: The Music Talk Mixtapes: Reviews & Impressions

Maybe it's a good time to revive this basic idea for participants to make a new personal music mix to share with everyone else, but with the obivous change to make it a mix on Spotify to share as a link instead of burned CDs being mailed around.
