KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas 2006 (Nights 1 & 2)

I will be listing the bands that are scheduled to appear at KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas. They are being devious this year and announcing the bands 1 per hour during the day, for the next couple of days.

Even though most of you won't be able to see them at the Gibson Amphitheater in North Hollywood (Los Angeles, CA), they usually simulcast the show (audio for sure, maybe video), so you can catch the shows that way.

I'm hoping to get tickets for night # 1 (so far), but they usually sell out within 10 minutes or so.

Night # 1 (Sat Dec 9, 2006):

1. 30 Seconds To Mars (really want to see them)
2. Wolfmother (really want to see them)
3. Saosin (never heard of them)
4. Papa Roach (another good band)
5. (+44) (so so)
6. Fall Out Boy (another good band)
7. My Chemical Romance (best band so far)
8. Incubus (this is a big one)
9. AFI (Excellent)
10. Foo Fighters (Incredible - the best)

Night # 2 (Sun Dec 10, 2006):

1. Gnarls Barkley (looks like they're going for the softer bands on Sunday night, as usual)
2. Angels & Airwaves (I guess they're not sharing the bill with (+44) ;) )
3. Snow Patrol (that Chasing Cars is a great song)
4. She Wants Revenge (they've got 2 or 3 real good songs)
5. The Raconteurs (a little Jack White is good)
6. Evanescence (they have the biggest selling album worldwide in the last couple of years)
7. Panic! At The Disco (one of the more popular MySpace Bands)
8. Beck (excellent and cutting edge artist)
9. The Killers (Excellent)
10. Foo Fighters (Both nights?)

Yeah, the whole "1 band per hour" thing got me frustrated when they announced it on Kevin & Bean today.

So Night #1's bands were released today. Tickets will be given out all day tomorrow. The lineup for Night #2 will be announced on Wednesday, with tickets given away all day Thursday.

Or so that's my understanding from listening this morning.

Terrible lineup.

I've seen all of these bands in concert except for +44, Papa Roach, FO Boy, My Chem. Romance and Wolfmother (i've heard they are great in concert) - whoever is lucky enough to score tickets should have a great concert. Saosin has grown on me a lot and I keep listening to their latest album and EP. They opened for AFI recently.

Seriously, going with the same type of music, which 10 bands would get you to go to KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas?

Chris

The only bands I like are from night one are the Foo Fighters and Incubus. I went to the 1995 KROQ Acoustic Xmas show that had a great lineup:

1995:
Bush, Foo Fighters, Garbage, Goo Goo Dolls, Lenny Kravitz, Alanis Morissette, No Doubt, Oasis, Joan Osborne, Porno for Pyros, Presidents of the United States of America, Radiohead, The Rentals, Silverchair, Sonic Youth, Toadies, Tripping Daisy and Wesley Willis

It was a great show! :)

I didn't go to the concert, but I believe they loved him. He had been on many times on The Kevin & Bean show, so most of the people there had already heard of him.

Of course they put him into the lineup as a joke, but he was well received. We like our freaks out here! :D

Well, I'm 45 and I always stay current with the good music, whether it's Alternative, Hip Hop or my favorite, Dance Music.

That's what I've never understood about most people as they get older. They usually hang on to their memories of music when they were growing up. Hell, The Beatles will always be my favorite band of all time, but I also know about all of the music that was popular in the 80's, 90's and now the 00's.

Sounds like a good lineup to me. I have never heard of Saosin or +44, though.

Night # 2 is being announced today. Please see my first post for Night # 2's lineup.

I love how they are doing the ticket sales for this. The basics, tickets will go on sale only on ticketmaster dot com and by phone when they play a certain song this weekend. Really fucks around with the scalpers as there's not a specific sales time.

And it screws around with regular people like you and me that have to always be listening to KROQ to know when the song is played. I've been listening pretty non stop since Thursday, but I think this is more of a inconvenience to the regular folk than the scalpers.

They should have at least given day and time parameters as to when they would play the song. Of course they are not going to play it during the weekend when most people cannot listen. And of course they won't be playing it from 10 pm to 5 am. They will probably play it early next week.

And don't let the management of KROQ get away with trying to fool us into thinking that they are doing this for us. The bottom line is, this will get them great ratings for these 4 or 5 days and that is the real reason why they are going to these lengths.

This is a bandaid to a real problem. They need to pass legislation that makes it illegal to sell a ticket over 10% of actual cost. That would be fair to everyone.

I think the real losers in all of this are the regular people that cannot listen 24/7 to the radio, not the ticket scalpers.

stop being such a dick.

dadaluholla 12-05-06 12:44 PM

That lineup looks pretty good to me (and I am not a teenager).

mrpayroll 12-05-06 05:49 PM

Well, here's the story of what happened. We all had to wait for the Foo Fighters "Everlong" to be played. So we (the listening audience) listened non stop from Thursday morning, all weekend and thru Monday afternoon for the song to be played.

And guess what? They played the song at 5:10 pm when most people in LA were driving home from work. I of course was not listening to the radio at that time and by the time I got home at 5:20 the tickets were already on sale at Ticketmaster. I tried for 20 minutes to get tickets and by 5:45 they announced that the concert had already sold out.

So, I wrote this e-mail to KROQ:

Subject: It's sad how KROQ management treats its listeners.

Long time listener here (1981) and day one listener to the Kevin & Bean Show.

Well it is 5:45 pm now and about 1/2 hour ago, KROQ played the magical Foo Fighters song and the Almost Accoustic Christmas tickets went on sale. I had been listening pretty much non stop since last Thursday, evening during the weekends when I usually don't listen to the radio.

I don't blame any of the KROQ DJs for this whole mess, because like me, you guys work for the 'man'. But I have question the motives of your Sr. Vice President, Kevin Weatherly, with regards to the way the ticket sales were held this year. KROQ claimed that they were doing it this way to combat the 'scalpers', who I agree are a blight upon this nation.

But you haven't punished the scalpers, you have punished your loyal listeners like me, because at 5:10 pm when the song was played, I like millions of other people, were driving home from work. Why would Mr. Weatherly pick a time like 5:10 pm, when most people are away from their computers?

I spent all day Thursday, Friday and Monday at work, by my computer with the Ticketmaster page opened and ready to try to get tickets to night # 1. This would have been my first Accoustic Christmas concert since 1992 when Duran Duran played.

But now, myself and thousands of other loyal listeners have lost out on a chance to purchase tickets. Guess what, the scalpers were by their computers at 5:10 pm and still have bought tickets, which they will sell at 5 times (or more) their face value.

Instead of punishing your listeners, KROQ management should lobby for changes in the laws regarding reselling of tickets. CBS Radio has deep pockets and lobbyists that can pay off the California Legislature, so that the law would allow tickets to only be sold at 10% or maybe 20% over their face value.

But let's be honest. The real reason that KROQ management came up with this terrible idea was to boost ratings during this crucial ratings period. They could have said, listen between 6 am and 8 pm Monday thru Friday for the Foo Fighters song. But instead, they made people change all of their weekend plans, just so they could be by their computers in case the song was played.

This whole affair has left a bitter taste in my mouth and I'm sure there are many thousands of people that would agree that KROQ fans were the only ones that were punished by all of this.

Yours sincerely,

Chris

This was the response I got from 'Bean' of the Kevin & Bean Show:

this truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

this week the hundreds of emails from listeners complaining
about the way tickets were on sale gave way to the hundreds
of emails from listeners complaining that the concerts are sold
out!

I very much appreciate your interest in the 2006 kroq almost
acoustic christmas concerts but simple supply and demand
dictates that not every one who wanted them was able to get
them.

there is no conspiracy, "the man" is not trying to keep you down,
jesus doesn't hate you....it's supply and demand. I know most people
don't even want it to be fair - they just want tickets.

we held some back for kroq street team members so definitely go
to kroq.com and sign up to be a member if you are not already -
it's free.

and of course we are giving them away on the air the rest of the
week too so tune in to win yours.

good luck and thanks for writing!

bean

And then my final reply was:

Thanx Bean for responding and of course Jesus loves me. He loves EVERYONE, even you Bean!

Keep up the good work there in Seattle.

Chris

Now, I'm not mad that I couldn't buy tickets. I was mad at how they conducted this sale and the time that they went on. The scalpers were by their computers at 5:10 pm and got tickets. The regular folks like you and me were driving home and didn't get tickets.

All the other years that the tickets went on sale at 10 am and I couldn't get it, I understood that there was more demand than supply, but at least I was able to try to start buying them when they went on sale, not 10 minutes later.

So, there you have it.

Chris
