SLIPKNOT- Voliminal: Inside the Nine [2DVD] -12/5/06

Don't Call It A DVD: Slipknot Slaves Over Lavish Film

Slipknot percussionist M. Shawn Crahan -- aka Clown -- put a lot of work into the band's upcoming video release, "Voliminal: Inside the Nine." But, he says, please don't call it a DVD.

"I don't really like that term; I'm calling it more of a movie than I am a DVD," explains Crahan, who conceived and directed the two-disc set. "You're talking three-and-a-half years in the making. There were over 300 videotapes at 60 minutes apiece to analyze, and I watched every single one of them. There's, like, 325 edits in the thing, and each one of them are precisely put in for an exact reason.

"So at the end of that, I didn't turn in a DVD, y'know? I turned in a movie, period. A film."

"Voliminal" includes one disc of live footage, music videos and interviews with each of Slipknot's nine members. But the centerpiece is the 90-minute film on the first disc, a stream-of-consciousness style presentation that takes viewers on stage, backstage, in the dressing room, on the tour bus and anywhere else that was part of Slipknot's experience while making and touring in support of 2004's platinum "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)."

"My band tours for months and months and months on end," Crahan says, "and you'd think we're crazy to put up with the sh*t we have to put up with to get on stage for an hour-and-a-half. So that's what the movie had to feel like; it had to be one conscious thought ... to just grab reality, grab the truth of it.

"I spent a lot of time organizing it in a way that I was speaking to you," he continues. "Hopefully people will pick up on that."

"Voliminal" comes out Dec. 5 via Roadrunner and will have to sate Slipknot's fans, the Maggots, until the group's next album. And according to Crahan that probably won't be until 2008.

"We're all taking a nice two-year break," he says. "We've been home for about a year. I'm sure that within a year from now we'll probably be writing. It's a little too early right now to say what's coming in the future, but we are still a very violent organization when it comes to our art; I'm very interested to see where we're all gonna be at this next level of all our lives."

Slipknot, the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning, hard rock enigma, will release the DVD VOLIMINAL: INSIDE THE NINE. A special double disc package, VOLIMINAL: INSIDE THE NINE takes the viewer on a several hour journey into the world of Slipknot as the band recently circled the globe in support of the multi-platinum album VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES). Far from your usual tour film, VOLIMINAL: INSIDE THE NINE is more of an art piece -- while fans are taken in the studio, on stage, backstage, on their tour bus and everywhere in between as they experience the energy of a band literally living, breathing and fighting for the music they created, none of it unfolds in ways you'd expect.

Disc 1:
features a 90-minute film, created and directed by M. Shawn Crahan, better known as Clown, that gives the Slipknot fan a window into the world of the band as seen through the mind of its creator. The film was shot on hand-held cameras and, as a result, is brutally honest and visually unique. The sound and visual edits are intense, disturbing and jarring while the cinematography brings the viewer as close as one can get to the band. Buried in Disc 1 are nine different "rabbit holes," that, when activated, will show a short vignette of each one of the nine members of the band. Not the typical extra footage often found as "easter eggs" on the average DVD, this footage contains some of the most surprising and revealing elements on the DVD.

Disc 2:
features three main elements - live footage, music videos and interviews with each member of the band. The live shows were captured at various venues around the world and show Slipknot in unique and somewhat unconventional settings. Everything from outdoor and daytime shows all the way to television award-show performances are included as are the celebrated music videos for "Duality", "Vermilion," "Before I Forget," "The Nameless," and the controversial video for "Vermilion 2," which was never officially released. Additionally, for the first time ever, fans get an up-close look at the band's "Death Masks" used onstage during this tour.

and the controversial video for "Vermilion 2," which was never officially released.
What was controversial about this video?

I think that the first disc could have been way better. It's too raw, the live footage is bootleg quality and gets repetative, not enough backstage stuff. It basically jumps scenes all over the place...

The 2nd disc I like alot:

The interviews are real cool, they were honest and entertaining + the group is unmasked! The only thing bad is that I wanted more!!

The only video I'd seen before was BEFORE I FORGET [1-2 times at my brother's house], which I love alot. DUALITY video was crazy. Vermillion 1&2 went well together :)

The live stuff was cool but no 5.1 :(... They could have put 3 NIL instead of (SIC)

... still a cool DVD to have.

If you get the latest Revolver magazine (the one with killswitch engage on the cover) Clown basically explains why the doc on disc 1 is very raw and loose (I dont' have the issue on me now, its in my car, but I'll try to post his reason's tomorrow morning.
