James Blunt tops poll of funeral song requests

Blunt tops funeral song requests
Goodbye My Lover reached number 9 in the UK charts in 2005

Funeral favorites
James Blunt's Goodbye My Lover has become the most requested song to be played at funerals and services of remembrance in the UK.
Robbie Williams' Angels is the second most popular.

I've Had the Time of My Life, made famous by the film Dirty Dancing, is in third place.

The survey, involving 5,000 people and carried out by The Bereavement Register, found 51% of people know what song they want played at their funeral.

The survey also suggests that 79% have discussed what songs they would like to have played.

Mark Roy, founder, of The Bereavement Register, said: "The top 20 really shows how far we have come in terms of saying goodbye. Gone are the dirges of yore, instead we are seeing contemporary music that is easier to relate to.

"Everyone has a favourite song that means something very special to them, often connected to a particular time and place."

Blunt has won two Brit awards, while his debut album was a hit in the UK and the US.

But the singer has faced a backlash from those who are not fans, being voted more irritating than traffic wardens, noisy neighbours and estate agents in a poll ranking the UK's most annoying things.

TOP POPULAR FUNERAL SONGS
1. Goodbye My Lover - James Blunt
2. Angels - Robbie Williams
3. I've Had the Time of My Life - Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley
4. Wind Beneath My Wings - Bette Midler
5. Pie Jesu - Requiem
6. Candle in the Wind - Elton John
7. With or Without You - U2
8. Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
9. Every Breath You Take - The Police
10. Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers

If any of the songs from Dirty Dancing or Beaches are played at my funeral, bring me back to life and then kill me again.

Kind of reminds me of one of the Top 5 lists in High Fidelity ("...angina's tough!"). Personally, I'd like "Keep Me In Your Heart" by Warren Zevon to be played at my funeral.

Ironic because another recent study has shown James Blunt tops poll of artists with songs that make you want to kill yourself.

People are weird. #7 implies you couldn't live WITH the person and #9 is about a stalker

See, I'm planning to have Zevon's "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" played at mine.

The Bus 10-24-06 07:42 AM

Surprised Cash's "Ring of Fire" isn't on there.

People are clearly picking based on the music and not the lyrics. #1 is about a breakup, #3 and #10 are love ballads, and #6 is about one of two famous people that most people obviously are not.

You'd think Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" would be up there somewhere.

slop101 10-24-06 09:54 AM

Or AC/DC's Highway to Hell...

If you've heard a whiny yelp of a voice singing "You're beautiful, You're beautiful" in the last year you've heard him.

I'm surprised Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" and Ray Charles' "Hit the Road, Jack" aren't there.

On a more serious note, perhaps because it's a UK list, but there are a lot of popular songs that actually would fit the funeral theme that are absent. Boyz II Men's "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye" and "One Sweet Day" (with Mariah Carey) for instance. Or even stuff like Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here".

I like Peter Gabriel's "I Grieve". If it's good enough for Jonathan Kent, it's good enough for me. :)

But nothing, and I mean nothing beats "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes, does it Mr. Spock?

Groucho 10-24-06 11:30 AM

I was wondering who the hell would play "You're Beautiful" at a funeral.

"I Wanna Be Sedated" is playing at my funeral.

Or "I Want To Live"

Turd Ferguson 10-24-06 03:19 PM

Apparently, British people want to be remembered by their loved ones as pussies.

cactusoly 10-24-06 06:34 PM

Megadeth's "Wake Up Dead" would be cool
or Alice Cooper's "I Love The Dead"

Coral 10-24-06 08:44 PM

I dunno... I always thought the idea of playing pop/rock music at a funeral was kinda cheesy. "I've Had the Time of My Life" seems as laugable as the the funeral scene in To Die For when "All By Myself" was played.

Personally I would stick with some small classical piece.

So, #5 on the chart?

That's appropriate since Blunt's big song is also a stalker song, yet none of the idiots who buy it realized that.

argh923 10-26-06 11:25 PM

It'd be funny to have Weird Al's parody of Blunt's song make the list.

Brent L 10-26-06 11:28 PM

If anyone plays a James Blunt song at my funeral, no matter when that might be, my ass is coming back from the dead to haunt them for the rest of their days.
