Artists whose first or last albums were their best

Can you think of any bands/artists whose best album was either their first or last/latest?

This is what I came up with:

First:
Dead Kennedys
Rage Against The Machine
Terence Trent D'Arby
Bad Brains
G N' R
Charlatans
Bjork

Last:
The Pixies (I don't think most agree with me on this one)
The Police

You think Trompe le Monde was the best Pixies album?

You're right, I don't agree.
The Police
Zenyatta for me.

I agree with your other ones...

Mine:

First:
King Crimson (although I can't stand "Moonchild")
The La's (haha)
The Cars
The Sex Pistols (haha)
The Velvet Underground
Modern Lovers
Curve
Minor Threat
...etc, this is a very common category.

Last:
My Bloody Valentine
Husker Du (my personal opinion although New Day Rising and Flip You Wig are very close)
Zombies (in their original incarnation)
Big Star
Richard and Linda Thompson
Roxy Music (I love all of their albums, but Avalon is their best, IMO)

Well you know how the saying goes - you have your whole life to write your first album, but only a few months to write the next. That's why in many cases, a band's first album is usually their best.

The Doors. Both their first and last albums are tied for being their best.

It's hard to find a rapper who's best album was their last, but I've got a few...

Masta Ace (The Long Hot Summer)
Edan (Beauty & The Beat)
Notorious B.I.G. (Life After Death)

= J

The Doves (Lost Souls)
At The Gates (Slaughter of the Soul)
I definately agree about Coldplay. I only like their first album (which I do really like--ditto with Bad Brains).

I don't think that bands who only had 2-3 albums should count. Sure, the first Television album was their best, as was the first Stone Roses album, but come on...

First album:

The Clash (maybe)
R.E.M.
Oasis
Echo and the Bunnymen
Pixies
The Cure (maybe)
Dream Syndicate
The Damned
Patti Smith
Talking Heads
Joe Jackson
The Flying Burrito Brothers
The Bee Gees
Traffic (maybe)
Dire Straits

Last album:

Odd, I couldn't think of any...

Anyone who thinks PARACHUTES is better than A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD and X & Y should seriously reevaluate their policy of not wearing a helmet when they go out their motorcycle...

I came into this thread thinking it would be easy to pick some, but damn! I guess my favorite albums are all between the first and last/latest.

Wait, just thought of two:
First = MC5 "Kick Out the Jams"
Last = Sleater-Kinney "The Woods"

I think we just have different tastes.

Moving on, I agree with The Cars, but think London Calling is better than the S/T for The Clash.

While I don't necessarily agree, I know for a fact that there are many Syd Barrett/60's psychedelic pop fans out there who would tell you Pink Floyd's Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is their best album.

Was Candy Apple Gray the last Husker Du album? That's my favorite of theirs.

First:

Big Country
The Alarm
Duran Duran
Big Audio Dynamite
The Slits
Stray Cats
The Police
The English Beat
Fine Young Cannibals

Last:

Bow Wow Wow

...can't think of any more...

edit: Forgot Violent Femmes for first. How'd I forget that--greatest first album in history!
