Scarlett Johansson to record album "Scarlett Sings Tom Waits"

Scarlett is to record a whole album of her singing Tom Waits songs. I already am obsessed with Tom Waits, and Scarlett is one of, if not my favorite, actress working today. Although I have never heard her sing, I tend to believe she wouldnt do this unless she actually could sing. Shes to intelligent to do otherwise and shes to classy. I will buy it, no doubt. |
If there's a bonus disc called "Scarlett Shows off her Snatch", I'll buy it.

I've long thought that there are several Waits songs that a woman could really do a lot with. Some of his writing is breathtakingly beautiful.

(The above is the old CD cover - which I have and like better than the new one.) As for SJ's upcoming album, it definitely sounds interesting. I'll have to give the song a listen when I get home from work. |

Hmmm... I think that was on Closing Time. She does have quite a nice voice, I will probably buy the album, although no one will be able to do any of his songs 'better' than him IMO. Someone who did a good version of a Tom Waits song is Norah Jones. She did 'The Long Way Home' on her lastest studio album. Quite a good version, still I like Toms more. And The Ramones did 'I Dont Wanna Grow Up'. Again a nice version. |

Madeleine Peryroux does a nice cover of (Looking For) The Heart of Saturday Night on her new album. I also liked Sarah McLachlan's cover of Ol' 55 on the Freedom Sessions.

(And by the way, can’t you just hear the little man saying schwing?) The disc, Anywhere I Lay My Head, is good. So good, in fact, that we have been involuntarily drawn into Woody Allen’s mind, where, on a well-worn throne lacy with cobwebs, Johansson sits, beneficent, opaque but with a stirring hint of depth, totally capable of carrying a string of movies and fulfilling our very purpose as a chronicler of the absurd beauty that this tragic existence sometimes affords. And yes, girl can sing. Not like Waits — that, of course, would be impossible, not to mention unbecoming. Think Nico, if Nico weren’t a Germanic death angel but the remaining American actress of her age who has not openly displayed her vagina. And who here is the Woody to Johansson’s crooning alter-ego? Dave Sitek, that arrogant white guy from TV on the Radio. (He acted as producer. David Bowie, by the way, also sings on a couple of songs, but obviously he's no 24-year-old actress.) Such is the power of this album that in Sitek we now find not merely a strangely unlikable hipster, but a sort of dark sellout visionary — a man who beheld a left-field talent capable of fluke, chart-climbing success where others saw a not-very-good actress liable to record a wretched commercial flop. His pompous indulgence in studio trickery, hubristic aim to re-create every song from the ground up — in a Louisiana studio where he claims he had no choice but to allow the sounds of crickets in, no less — and (judging from interviews) creepily overbearing direction of the talent herself resulted, quite simply, in a work of great and singular beauty. If we had to grade it on a rating system, we would give it one burning, elemental star, in honor of Scarlett Johansson herself. —Nick Catucci I really love where she took Waits' songs. She didn't just copy but made them her own. The production is very 80s, but sometimes her vocals (which while not the greatest ever are still very good) are overshadowed by it which is the only negative I can find. Anywhere I Lay My Head (the actual song) is awesome |

They were talking about this on Ryan Seacrest Show.. they were talking about how one of the song was morbidly slow.. haven't heard any of her songs yet, but i'll check it out later

Morbidly slow? Okay.
Like Scarlett said in one of her interviews about the record - she doesn't want to make the kind of music that she can dance to in clubs a la Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton. |
