I will definetly miss Tower Records.

I rarely purchase anything from them nowadays, but back in the eighties and early nineties I loved their stores. I could spend hours going through their selections and they would have some great deals, a fantastic selection, hard to find stuff, and a great atmosphere.

It's a little sad, but not unexpected. Their biggest draw was their huge selection and with the advent of internet shopping, people can find all of those hard-to-find things from the comfort of their own home now.

I was there yesterday. It's up to 15% now. Still not a bargain.

Sucks, I work a block away from the 4th St. store and I'd hit it quite often. Most of their stuff was overpriced but they also have a lot of pretty good sales, selling discs at 9.99. They also stock more in one location than most other places, and I find it a better shopping experience than Virgin in union square.

Not sure why some here are saying they're "glad" Tower's going under. If you don't like a place then don't shop there. But why be happy when they fail?

Hopefully, other stores will realize that high prices aren't working, and will lower their prices. If that means forcing the record lables to charge less, so be it.

I'm not so much "glad" that they are closing, but I'm not going to lose any sleep when a company can't keep up with the changing times.

I'm certainly not happy they're going out of business, but their idea of a "sale" explains why! (and is totally laughable)

i went in there and the cd i wanted, 14.99, would have cost me 13.50 with the liquidation discounts they were giving.

no thank you.

Since the company was told, I would assume it is the liquidation company that is setting the sale prices now.

Same at the one I live near, but its mostly 20% off of $14.99 (comes to $11.99) to $18.99 ($15.19). The same CDs are generally $9.99 to $13.99 at Best Buy. Plus Tower's selection leaves something to be desired.

I'm going to miss this Tower. They had very competitive new release prices and I could pick something up in the middle of the day. Only Rock Records is left, and I know they were teetering on closing a while back too...

Anyone gotten any good deals at their Tower since the sale has gone "big" (40% and more)?

I picked up "Ill Communication" and "Check your Head" for about 6 bucks total the other day, and picked up two Bobby Bare Jr. CDs this afternoon at 50% off for a total of about 16 bucks. Not door busters by any means, but cheaper than anywhere online for the two Bobby Bare CDs, even w/ Bloodshot Records year-end sale.

I got awesome deals at the one off Route 7 in Fairfax Co. (near Tyson's Corner). I stuck to import-only singles (mostly European, maybe one Japanese one, if that). I got twenty for $35. I've paid that much for one import single previously.

Posted this on another forum as well, but here is what I got from my recent visit today.

Just got back from the one in Schaumburg (IL)

DVD's at 40%, Most CDs at 50%, Rap & Singles at 70%, Magazines at 85%

Picked up a nice varied bunch:

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique - $3.90
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale - $3.90
Magic Numbers - Love Me Like You (Single) - $2.40
Katie Mulua - Piece By Piece - $8.50
Presidents Of The United States Of America - S/T (Deluxe Edition) - $8.50
Otis Redding - The Dock Of The Bay - $5.00
Unit 4+2 - Singles As & Bs - $9.50
Various - Austin City Limits Music Festival 2004 - $9.00
Various - Soundtrack A Prairie Home Companion (Deluxe Edition) - $10.00
Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator) - $9.00
Neil Young - Praire Wind (Deluxe Edition) - $13.00
Zutons - Why Won't You Give Me Your Love? (Single) - $2.40

Probably could have done better with some of them online, oh well, nothing like instant gratification. There was still a bunch more that at least interested me, but I will wait until the next price drop, maybe even 70% to go back.

The one at the end of Duke Street has a lot of singles, but when I checked through there a few months ago I didn't see any singles worth picking up so I'm not wasting my time on that section now. Didn't know about that one out there...I'll wait until the discount gets lower and then might hit it up.

Thanks to the OP and to all for bumping this. The continual reminders finally got me to go in and use up some store credit I had there.

I found a few import singles (the Kaiser Chiefs), a (pre-)Kansas CD, an 85% off Xbox magazine, and the DVD Captain and Tenille set.

The one in Torrance CA is a mess. I guess there's some potential deals though...

I'll be heading over to Tower Saturday morning for what will most likely be the last time. Hopefully, I'll find a few cool items.

Lower? Did you read what I paid? 20 singles for $35! Some of them were even EPs.

The Tower thread in the Bargains forum has been pretty active throughout the liquidation...
