Phil Collins Regrets Genesis Comeback
11th July 2007 21:01:01
Rocker Phil Collins regrets agreeing to reunite with Genesis, because the
comeback tour has kept him away from his two young sons.
The singer has split with his third wife Orianne Cevey since agreeing to
reform the band - and he hates the way the tour has left him thousands of
miles away from Switzerland, where Cevey lives with their children Nicholas
and Matthew.
He tells Mojo, "I'm not interested. My life is in turmoil. Frankly, at the
moment I am living for my two little boys, so this tour is actually a pain
in the *beep* because I'm away from home. I've been trying to keep it short.
"Every time somebody said we could pay for the tour if we do another four
dates, I said no. I signed on to buy a blue suit: I don't want to end up
with a red one."
The band formed in the 1960's and have sold 150 million albums worldwide
placing them amongst the top thirty best selling acts of all time.
Collins joined the band in 1870 as the drummer. But when Peter Gabriel left
the band in 1975 Collins took over lead vocals.
Collins was a hit on vocals as the band had a string of successful albums
throughout the eighties including Abacab, Genesis and Invisible Touch.
Collins left the band in 1996 to focus on his solo work.

From Billboard.com: Genesis Sketching Out Live DVD, Autobiography
There's no new music in the offing, but that's not keeping the reunited Genesis from planning a parade of product in the fourth quarter of the year, including a book and a probably DVD and live album.
Guitarist Mike Rutherford tells Billboard.com that "a guy's filmed every breath I've taken since the first meeting in New York last October," and that Genesis will be filming its concert Saturday at the Circo Massimo in Rome, which closes out the European leg of the Turn It On Again Tour.
"We're gonna film that one for a DVD and probably have a live album out from the tour as well," Rutherford says, guessing that they'll probably come out "this year, I'm sure. It makes sense to have it this year." Genesis is also releasing soundboard CDs from each concert via the Encore Series at the web site themusic.com.
Also coming this fall is a new book, "Genesis Chapter and Verse," which will present the official biography of the band including interviews with Rutherford, Phil Collins and Tony Banks as well as Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett, plus managers and others associated with the group. The late Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun gave one of his final interviews for the tome.
"It's a nice book, actually," Rutherford reports. "My wife read it and couldn't put it down. It had an effect on me, too, reading all that stuff you say about each other. It kind of brought it to the front of your mind how kind of special the way we work is and has been -- the way we write, the way we get on so well, the way we've done things. I think it made us appreciate what a great journey it's been and what fun it still is."
Genesis continues the journey on Sept. 7, when the North American leg of the reunion tour begins. What will happen after those 20 shows, however, is anybody's guess, according to Rutherford.
"At the moment we're avoiding making long-term plans," he notes. A reunion that includes Gabriel and Hackett is still a possibility, but Rutherford says a full-scale reactivation of any form of Genesis is unlikely.
"It's not like we reformed the band and we're going to get back and do an album," he explains. "But that doesn't mean we can't do stuff together -- but in a slightly different way. We're having a very good time. We're enjoying ourselves, and so we'll talk when we get there about what else we might do rather than map this big, long plan out."

DVD Talk Gold Edition
I'll be picking up the live disc for sure! I was sad I couldn't really afford to see them in Detroit. As with the last box set, I'll pass on this. I've got the albums, I've got the videos (Cinema Show)... that's plenty.

I'll wait for the Trespass -> Lamb Lies down on Broadway Boxed set.
1983 is the year I stopped listening to Genesis. Their pop crap got worse with each release until they descended into a light rock version of the Phil Collins Band.

The 3 disc DVD set of their last concert tour is coming out on Tuesday. It's called When In Rome 2007, and it is only available at Walmart (for now). The website shows it at $19.88. I saw them in Boston at the Garden last year....a great show. Although there wasn't 500,000 fans in Boston like there was at their show in Rome (yes, that figure is right!)

Duke, mainly because the music became
more modern, the drum machine became
more prevalent and the lyrics started
getting less mystical, more specific.
Complex, ambiguous studies of loss
became, instead, first-rate pop songs.
A classic example of this is
"Misunderstanding", which not only was
the group's first big hit of the
Eighties, but also seemed to set the
tone for the rest of the decade.
Duke was followed almost immediately
by ABACAB, yet another weapon in an
increasingly impressive musical
arsenal. Once again the songs
reflect dark emotions, focusing on
people who feel lost or are in
conflict. Sound depressing? Hardly.
The production and sound, courtesy of
producer Hugh Padgham, are gleaming

"Who Dunnit?" profoundly expresses the
theme of confusion over a funky groove
and what makes this song so exciting
is that it ends with its narrator
never finding anything out at all--

Peter Gabriel fans - Genesis: 1970-1975 11/11/08
From billboard.com:
Rhino's comprehensive Genesis reissue campaign will conclude Nov. 11 with the release of "Genesis: 1970-1975," a 7-CD/6-DVD collection loaded with rare material and 5.1 DTS audio mixes.
The boxed set includes the studio albums "Trespass," "Nursery Cryme," "Foxtrot," "Selling England by the Pound" and "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway," all of which feature original lead singer Peter Gabriel.
Each album includes a corresponding DVD with film footage from the era and 2007 interviews with band members. Among the highlights are 1972 performance footage from Belgian TV and Rome's Piper Club, found on "Foxtrot," and 90 minutes of live video from 1973 on Italian TV and at Paris' Bataclan, found on "Selling England by the Pound."
Collectors will be thrilled with the disc "Extra Tracks 1970-1975," specifically four songs recorded in 1970 for a documentary about painter Mick Jackson that never materialized. "Provocation," "Frustration," "Manipulation" and "Resignation" pre-date Phil Collins' arrival in Genesis by a year and are all previously unreleased.
The rarities disc also boasts a demo of "Going Out To Get You," three tracks from the BBC show "Nightride" and the 7-inch single "Happy the Man."
Genesis toured last year with Collins for the first time since 1992. The worldwide trek grossed $109 million, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Re: And you thought Rhino's Genesis reissue campaign was over!
Genesis Rounds Out Reissues With Live Box Set by Gary Graff
When Genesis released "Genesis: 1970-1975," its third boxed set of studio albums, last fall, keyboardist Tony Banks told Billboard.com that "the next logical thing to do would be something with the live albums. We have a few of those, and we have quite a bit of stuff in the vaults that could be added to flesh things out a bit."
That will happen on Sept. 29, when Rhino releases "Genesis Live 1973-2007," a 10-disc set featuring five of the group's six official live albums -- it will include a spot for last year's "Live Over Europe" album from the 2007 reunion tour -- along with a wealth of unreleased material. Included in the latter will be "Live at the Rainbow 1973," an oft-bootlegged nine-song collection (portions of which have been previously released) recorded during October of that year in London after the release of "Selling England By the Pound."
The 1973 release "Genesis Live" will be bolstered by five tracks from "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" tour recorded in January of 1975 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. "Seconds Out" from 1977 will remain intact, while the version of 1982's "Three Sides Live" in the box will feature the live tracks from the U.K. edition of the album -- "One For the Vine," "Fountain of Salmacis" and a medley of "It" and "Watcher of the Skies" -- rather than the studio songs that were part of the U.S. package. The box also reconciles the two versions of "The Way We Walk," which had been sub-titled "The Shorts" (1992) and "The Long" (1993), and combines them in the original concert sequence.
Genesis members Banks and Rutherford rode herd on the remixing of the albums with Nick Davis. "Genesis Live," "Seconds Out" and "Live At The Rainbow 1973" all feature 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound versions.
Delving into the backlog of live recordings may also hasten the release of individual shows via Genesis' web site, something the group promised when it launched the portal several years ago. "We still talk about that," Banks acknowledged. "We will get to it. I don't know when, but I promise you we'll do it. We've pulled tapes from all sorts of areas, and we've got board mixes from quite an early era, so that will be quite fun for some people." Rutherford added that, "There's some quite nice things there, I think. It just requires energies from someone to pull it all together and put it all out in a way that makes some sort of sense."
The full track listing for "Genesis Live 1973-2007" is:
Genesis Live: "Watcher Of The Skies," "Get 'Em Out By Friday," "The Return Of The Giant Hogweed," "The Musical Box," "The Knife" Bonus Tracks: "Back In N.Y.C.," "Fly On A Windshield," "Broadway Melody Of 1974," "Anyway," "The Chamber Of 32 Doors"
Seconds Out: "Squonk," "Carpet Crawlers," "Robbery, Assault & Battery," "Afterglow," "Firth Of Fifth," "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)," "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway"/"The Musical Box (closing)," "Supper's Ready," "The Cinema Show," "Dance On A Volcano"/"Los Endos"
Three Sides Live: "Turn It On Again," "Dodo," "Abacab," "Behind The Lines," "Duchess," "Me And Sarah Jane," "Follow You Follow Me," "Misunderstanding," "In The Cage"/"Cinema Show"/"Slippermen"/"Afterglow," "One For The Vine," "Fountain Of Salmacis," "It"/"Watcher Of The Skies"
The Way We Walk: "Land Of Confusion," "No Son Of Mine," "Driving The Last Spike," "Old Medley" -- "Dance On A Volcano"/"The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway"/"The Musical Box"/"Firth Of Fifth"/"I Know What I Like," "Throwing It All Away," "Fading Lights," "Jesus He Knows Me," "Home By The Sea"/"Second Home By The Sea," "Hold On My Heart" "Domino" ("In The Glow Of The Night"/"The Last Domino"), "The Drum Thing," " I Can't Dance," "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight," "Invisible Touch," "Turn It On Again," "Mama," "That's All," "In Too Deep"
Live At The Rainbow 1973: "Watcher Of The Skies," "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight," "The Cinema Show," "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)," "Firth Of Fifth," "The Musical Box," "More Fool Me," "The Battle Of Epping Forest," "Supper's Ready"

Re: Genesis reunion / tour discussion & news
I probably will pass on this one. The article appears to state that Three Sides Live and The Way We Walk will not be in 5.1. Kinda stupid to do some of them but not the rest. Just not enough added value to make me upgrade. I'll just dowload the Rainbow 1973 show or maybe buy it if they do individual releases like in the past.

Re: Genesis reunion / tour discussion & news
I'll buy the reissue of the 1973 live album. Annoyingly, the Lamb songs they added are already available on the Genesis 1969-1975 Anthology set, which I already own. I'll buy a copy of the Rainbow show from ebay or something.
