Wierd Al -- getting too mainstream?
 

Hey all,

I am a huge Wierd Al fan -- but after hearing his latest album, I can't help but feel that he is becoming too mainstream....

I don't know, it's like he's more political than ever before, and he is singing about pop-culture more than ever.... that is, he's succumbing to the trendy, fad-y topics of the NOW...aaarrgghh. Maybe it's just that the modern-day topics are more annoying than ever, and when he sings about them, it's even more annoying...

Maybe i'm just having a bad moment or something....anyone else notice this? Oh yea, and all of the rap parodies, and rap-style songs are pretty bad...

That's why I threw it in there that since pop-culture is more annoying than ever, it makes it hard to listen to some of the new material.....

The title of this thread makes me laugh. :)

He needs to stick to parodying obscure acts with tons of indie cred like Michael Jackson, George Harrison, Eminem etc.

Seriously, though, he's always gone after the huge names.

He always seems to parody one artist that ends up being a one-hit wonder... He doesn't always go for the biggest names, but if he parodied songs that weren't hits, who would get the jokes?

His 'style parodies' are frequently of more indie obscure groups.

I preferred Weird Al when he was on SubPop.

I haven't really liked anything Wierd Al has put out for at least 10 years. I liked it better when he went after the poppy 80's songs. Which he seems to go after whatever is popular, so because of the change in music I don't really care of anything he puts out anymore.

I think Amish Paradise was his last good song.

Yea, I agree -- if I don't like the original song, then the parody isn't usually as good.... I have a fear that his next album will be all "emo" parodies and styles.....ans I don't mean Emo Phillips either.....

Considering that rap is practically at the point of self-parody anyway, it's hard to make it any funnier.

The internet didn't exist when Weird Al became too mainstream.

I never really thought these kind of debates could happen over a kid's performer....kinda nifty to listen in

Weird Al (not "Wierd Al", he types with a nerdy-heavy sigh) is not a kid's performer.

Agreed. His songs will go right over the heads of most children.

I liked his Spider-Man song to the tune of Billy Joel's Piano Man.

I do recall seeing more adults at his concert than "kids".

Some of his subject matter is hardly the kind of stuff I would see on a standard kids album.

He has two xmas songs, one is about being nuked and the other is about Santa snapping and killing people...hardly kids material.

But damn if it isnt funny!

...My friend's and I loved him and uHF was one of our favorite movies when we were like 10...we all seem to have outgrown him now...that's why I assumed he was more of a kids performer...

Just wanted to give this post some recognition.

As an animation fan, I know exactly how you feel, Adam. ;)

The problem is that this album cover isn't made in the style of his old ones. He previously mocked album covers by small, almost underground bands (Nirvana) or he'd go after obscure independent movies (Jurassic Park).

Let's not forget his cover based on that underground artist Michael Jackson.

Also the first single off Running with Scissors was written for some indie movie out of Nicasio, CA.
