Recommendations please. ROCK. female lead singer

So I really like bands like "Lacuna Coil" (for Cristina. that Andrea guy is horrible) and to a lesser extent, "Evanescence."

Are there any other bands out there that I should check out? I guess you can say I'm hungry for those female voices in rock but I find it's rare to come across many.

Aside from the Metal/Goth influences of the bands I mentioned I'm also a really big fan of Grunge

eh, not sure if you'd like it, but what the hell, I like em. You should try out Arch Enemy and Walls of Jericho. Also Garbage is good to (given that you like grunge, well at least their most recent release had that post grunge sound.)

Flyleaf.

antennaball 09-12-06 10:52 PM

I used to love Kittie. The afore mentioned Flyleaf is great too.

A little bit softer, but The Cranberries are a great band with a female vocalist. Check out their excellent debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't We?

Put in order of favorite to least:

Drain S.T.H. - kind of a gothic/metal group
HalfCocked - rock, fairly catchy
Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re - Japan rockers
Repbulica - kind of a dance/rock mix
Guano Apes - everyone's heard "Proud Like a God"
Gretchen - more rock, not too shabby
Esthero - more of a downtempo girl, but has some upbeat songs
Tsunami Bomb - punk-lite
Angelspit - industrial, if you're into that sort of thing

Think power pop punk a la Green Day with bitchy female vocals. GREAT band.

I've always liked Joydrop. Also No Doubt. And Heart.

THE DISTILLERS. Sing Sing Death House and Coral Fang are two of my favorite albums EVER!

If you want metal, check out Nightwish and The Gathering. Both have been around for a long time and both have huge catalogs.

If you want Grunge, I suspect you've heard L7. Bricks are Heavy was one of the better grunge albums.

Check out the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs for some pretty good nuevo punk. The Kills sound sort of like a junkie-led White Stripes with both male and female vocals.

Rilo Kiley. Some of their songs have a nice strong riff, others are much quieter, but lead vocalist is Jenny Lewis, who besides having a great voice, is also a co-star from The Wizard with Fred Savage :)

Ill third Flyleaf and add Veda.

Admittedly, I need to look into both a little more but i have heard some Flyleaf songs and enjoyed it. Ive also seen Veda live (opened for Thrice last year) and thought they were very good.

Joan Jett

Michael Corvin 09-13-06 09:34 AM

If you like Lacuna Coil and Evanescene(to any degree), you can't go wrong with Nightwish.

nodeerforamonth 09-13-06 10:19 AM

Lunachicks
The Donnas
L7 (esp if you like "grunge")
Joan Jett
The Muffs
Kelly Osbourne's first album is very underrated
The Eyeliners
The Pandoras (their garagey stuff is better than their metalish stuff)

Turd Ferguson 09-13-06 10:43 AM

All others pale before Chrissie Hynde.

Jeremy517 09-13-06 11:04 AM

Garbage
Hole

I used to hang out with The Pandoras when I lived in Los Angeles. Agreed. their 1960s garage sound was much cooler than the metal.

Another vote for the Muffs.
Has anyone mentioned Liz Phair yet?
Anything involving Lisa Marr -- especially Buck
I'm really digging a band called Candypants these days. They have a myspace page where you can hear some of their stuff.
Ditto with a band called the Chubbies.
The Breeders probably deserve a mention.
Kim Gordon sings lead on some Sonic Youth stuff.

The Sympathy for the Record Industry label has put out two compilations called "Alright, This Time Just the Girls," volumes 1 and 2. Pick those up to hear some greta chick rock.

There's a band I've been meaning to check out called Three Headcoatees. The only song from them I've heard from them is their cover of Ca Plane Pour Moi, but man ... they totally rock on that song.

The Gathering - Mandylion

Tristania

No one mentioned PJ Harvey, wtf?

I like this band "The Souls" (female fronted), think they were signed cause she hooked up with Gavin Rossdale, that was awhile back and the band has since broke up...but really liked the voice and the band.

I liked Toby? who left Snake River Conspiracy...and the first SRC album is great...but now they have a new chick I don't like as much.
