Johnny Cash " Boy Named Sue" censorship question
 

Was the song ever available unedited when it was originally released or not?

I have the "San Quentin" which is uncut and contains the "Son of a bitch that named you Sue" lyric. And this is the only place I've ever been able to hear that line intact.

Yet after giving it a listen on The Essential Johnny Cash 2 disc release. That segment is completely bleeped out in the old school "BLEEEEEEEEEEEEP" noise. Did they use a radio edit(since that version plays on radio to this day unfortunately) or was the song bleeped originally since it was 'too profane' at the time(while it's tame and can be said on tv/radio today)?

And before someone claims Wal-Mart 'edited' the cd. I did buy both of his prision concert releases at Wal-Mart in the newly remastered uncensored versions. And the few profanities used are intact.

I do hate that bleep, it's really annoying and godammit, it's not like he even said that bad of a word!

Strange. Because the first time I heard this song about 18 years ago (On an old 60's tape compilation) my dad was singing along with it to me. Then when the bleep came up, "Son of..." came out of his lips as if he heard it uncut before. And I seriously doubt that he had a copy of the San Quentin album to know what it was.

Gotta ask him about that.

Q: Did Johnny Cash ever make a studio version of this song? Or are all versions live performances?
