Legal Download Music Sites
 

I'm looking for a site similar to Walmart where I can download unedited songs for $.88 / $1 per song whatever. I don't want to purchase $6 CDs and I don't want to pay $15 per month plus $.78 per song. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

www.archive.org has a ton of live music from tape-friendly artists available for free d/l. Highly reccomended.

allofmp3.com. Great quality, not bad selection and unedited.

What format are the allofmp3 files?

Also, I remember reading about a different website that charges a flat fee (something like $9.99) per month with unlimited downloads. The catch was that their selection was almost entirely indie labels. Am I misremembering or does such a thing exist?

I found this list when helping my brother investigate how his small regional band's music ended up on iTunes. It turns out that the signed up for it and was getting (a little bit) of money for his band from downloads because he signed up for this when he listed his band's CD with CD Baby. I always thought it was a good list because there are many download services I have never heard of on it. Maybe this will be helpful to those of you looking for something a little different...

itunes has the best selection and setup. very simple to use. however, they don't support cd text! :grumble:

www.emusic.com - great source for independent label music free of DRM and about 1/4 the price of iTunes.

That hasn't been proven.

mp3, wma, and flac with absolutely zero DRM. They charge a fee upfront and add credits to your account that go down as you continue to order music. Very good quality and very inexpensive.

itunes also contains restrictive DRM, so-so quality and ordering a CD of lower quality 128k aac files costs the same as going up to BB and buying the actual CD. In many cases they are more expensive because you can buy quite a few CDs cheaper than $9.99.

This is the only service I use, but I have also heard good things about audio lunchbox. I will not buy DRM music so itunes is out.

Keep in mind that:
A) It isn't legal in the US (although no one has been prosecuted and probably won't be)
B) You aren't paying the artist when you go through there; you're paying the Russian mob.

Again..

A) That has not been proven it's speculation.
B) That has not been proven it's just rumors.

At any rate, until there is iron clad proof, other than the rantings of the RIAA, that shows that I am breaking the law and supporting the Russian Mafia I'll use them.

Audio Lunchbox is similar to eMusic in terms of pricing and rock offerings but the site is poorly organized and seems to be somewhat lacking in other areas of music. If you know what you want, you'll have no problems with them.
