MusicTalk's Concert Discussion Thread

The concert season is in full gear and I know my fellow MusicTalk's frineds are seeing some fantastic concerts. Let's collect our stories in this thread.

So, what do you have tix too coming up? What concerts have you seen lately? Anything exciting coming up that you can't wait for?

I just saw Electric Six at the Bling Pig in Ann Arbor, MI. These guys are pure cheese but they're a good kind of cheese. You might know them from a few songs on the radio like Danger! High Voltage and Gay Bar. They're far from my favorite band. Hell, I'm not even sure I really dig'em but they're one helluva bar band and they had me dancing. Nothing wrong with that. The lead singer gives off kind of a Dickie Barrett (Mighty Might Bosstones) vibe and his energy kept the crowd moving for an hour and a half.

A couple of months back I saw Broken Social Scene in Detroit. Pretty horrible concert. Really, really bad sound. All the female vocals (and some of the male vocals) sounded like robots. About two songs in, the mics started to screech horribly. I mean, like, everyone holding their ears horrible. They "fixed" it and started playing Fire Eyed Boy and about a minute in....

SCREEEEEEECH! SCRREEEEEEEEEEEEEECH!!!!!!!!!!!

Horrible, horrible screeching. The band jammed through it though and then announced they would take a break and try to fix the audio problems.

The singer came out and talked to the crowd for about 25 minutes answering questions (Do you like radiohead? Can I jam with you guys? :sigh: ). One girl asked him if he would strip and, next thing you know, he was down to his boxers.

Finally, they returned to the stage and played for about two and a half hours. The audio still sucked but at least it was free of fingernails on the blackboard screeching. They had a violin player playing all night but I never heard the instrument once it was so far back in the mix. They skipped the encore (well, at least the part where they walk backstage and then come back) and finished strong. During the last song, the lead singer once again stripped down to his boxers and jammed out. By that time, everybody was ready to get out of there.

All that aside, the tracks from their newest album sounded pretty good as did some of their old stuff off of You Forgot It In People. These guys showed moments of brilliance but it was one of those nights where they just couldn't win.

Anyhow, you get the idea. I currently have tix for:

Sonic Youth/Flaming Lips -- State Theater, Detroit -- August 4th
Gnarl Barkley/Peeping Tom -- State Theater, Detroit -- August 7th
Tom Waits -- Detroit Opera House -- August 11th

My birthday is August 8th so I'm in for quite a birthday week.

I forgot about Oasis. Saw them as well.

Mndtrp, you should enjoy the Billy Idol show. I saw him a little over a year ago on a club tour and it was awesome. 2 hours and he was into it. Going in I wondered if he would just be going thru the motions but it was a great show. Hope yours is too.

I caught Pearl Jam 3 times, and saw DMB a few weeks ago. All were amazing shows.

Nothing else on the slate yet.

So far this month, I've seen Toad the Wet Sprocket and Big Head Todd and the Monsters in Charlottesville, VA on July 8th. Great show. It was so refreshing to see Toad together again. Not many people there for Toad. A pretty good crowd for Big Head. They switched opening slots each night, but both played 90 minute sets. Both bands did Meet & Great after the show, and I snagged a poster off of the kiosk and was able to get both band's signatures. My wife got her ticket signed by everyone, so it'll make a great framed print.

I saw Drive-By Truckers, Robert Randolph, and The Black Crowes on July 11th. The Black Crowes have become extremely Jammy. DBT were limited to 30 minutes, and I cannot wait to see them at a bar. The NPR show that was streamed on Saturday night from NPR was 2 hours and 51 minutes long!!

It was great but kinda weird too. It was in a sold out club in Montreal. I think he was in Canada for some other reason and decided to do the shows because he just happened to be there because there was only one other Nort American date and was backed up by a Maiden cover band.

The show was great because he played a lot of old Maiden songs you don't hear live anymore and the songs were sung the way they were supposed to be. Paul's voice sounded like it did in the 80's.

I actually got my picture taken with him after the show and got my Killers cd signed.

That's about right, I guess. I have not seen them since Midtown in 1996. I just don't remember them playing Thorn In My Pride for 15 minutes like they did in Charlotte.

I didn't say "lately."

There's also a difference between "Jammy" and "Extremely Jammy."

I was thinking about going to that Tool show (in Toronto,) but I didn't feel like spending $70 to see a band I rarely listen to.

In the past few months, I've seen:

April 4th: koRn, Mudvayne, 10 Years
May 10th: Alice Cooper and Helix
June 23rd: Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings with Serena Ryder
June 28th: 30 Seconds to Mars, Agent Sparks, The Audition, Porcelain Youth
July 10th: Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
July 25th (yesterday): Ozzfest Canada

Upcoming:

August 28th: Family Values Tour 2006
December 4th: The Who
