Syd Barrett Has Died (Confirmed)

This is yet to be confirmed by any major news source, so until it is, I would still treat it as a rumour.

News just in that founder of Pink Floyd Syd Barrett died last week at his family home at the age of 60. The death is thought to be Diabetes related. The family have confirmed the death to the BBC.

Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett (January 6, 1946 – July 11, 2006)

Shine on you crazy diamond.

/shoots self for ridiculously cliched comment.

Also, just for Piper and The Madcap Laughs, he deserves a place in the Rock God pantheon.

Today is the much anticipated release of PULSE as well. This is sad.

pinata242 07-11-06 09:46 AM

Wish You Were Here just got elevated to a whole new level. Bittersweet day for Floyd fans.

I can't seem to edit my post at all and I don't have a report to mod button, so can someone request that a mod change the title to reflect that it has been confirmed that he died?

Just heard the news from a buddy and fellow Floyd fan.

:(

This is really quite bittersweet. Syd was no musical genius, but as one of the founders of arguably the greatest band the world has ever known, he helped to redefine music. If it wasn't for Syd's problems there may have never been huge amounts of the Pink Ffloyd discography. We also could still be possibly still be listening to new gilmour/waters compositions. While it is sad, I hope Syd's death brings David and Roger back together to realize the time is short to put a final exclamation point on Pink floyd's legacy.

RIP Syd. I'm sure there is a nice bike up there for you.

The "Pink Floyd" of "Pulse" has about as much to do with Syd Barrett as Ringos Travelling All Stars has to do with John Lennon.

It's a pity. I was hoping for one final period of lucidity out of Syd so we could find out a little more about him and his life for all these years.

RIP, Syd.

great. Now I have to hear about how "great" Pink Floyd is for the rest of the week.

astrochimp 07-11-06 03:55 PM

Heard on the radio today at work :(

RIP Syd.

:goodbye:

He kicked out some interesting music, that's for sure.

Is anybody else struggling for breath due to the size of somebody's ego?

Sanitarium 07-12-06 02:13 AM

Sad, sad news. Even though he left Floyd and the spotlight early on, he had a major impact on the band and rock history for that matter.

I just picked up PULSE today too and had it in my DVD drive when I saw the news. I guess he's in the great gig in the sky. RIP Syd.

It's a sad thing. But it was a sad life, and I'm sure he was ready to go.

I feel sorry for those around you who might have to hear about how "great" of a person you were when you die.

NORML54601 07-12-06 01:46 PM

Bummer. Piper is my favorite Floyd album and I also dig both of Syd's solo albums.

For those of you who don't know Syd's story, I'd highly reccomend checking out the VH1 behind the music special on Pink Floyd.

Yeah he did. I was surprised too, consdering that the news came out two days ago. All I can figure from this is he was found dead at his home between July 7th and July 11th. It definitely sucks because he could've been doing something with his music for the new millenium. Maybe he did, and I just need to check it out. In any case, I think I'm going to play "Wish You Were here" album today, in rememberance of him and his music. What do you guys think?
