I could use some help with some pop/punk recommendations
 

I've run through my last couple batches of CDs that they're burned into my freaking brain. I'm starting to hate my music, I've got about 40 gigs of stuff going back to about 1990, and I need some new blood and bands. I'll throw out stuff off the top of my head that kicks ass for me and I'd appreciate any recommendations.

I'm pretty sure that sums up my last mp3 disc, I'm dying to get the new Living End CD but it seems to only be an import at this point. Most of my friends recommend all this underground punk stuff that sounds to me like screaming and a kid slamming a trash can underneath a subway. I'm glad they like it, not for me though. People say I should try the Arctic Monkeys, doesn't sound too promising but I'm still trying to round up a few of their tracks to give them a shot. I need new stuff and I'm desperate, help would be appreciated.

most, if not all, of my punk taste ends sometime in the mid-80s, but I was a big fan of:

sounds like Danzig crossed with Morrissey (not my words). worth looking into.

You might like Anti-Flag, Morningwood, Arctic Monkeys or the new Vines

I think Hawthorne Heights is total shit, but it fits the whole pop/punk genra.


OH YEAH, you'll probably really like the YEAH, YEAH, YEAHS...fever to tell is a more manic album, but most people like the more subdued SHOW YOUR BONES

I'm personally a fan of Rx Bandits and Streetlight Manifesto, but both are more bordering on pop/ska.

"Call the Doctor" & "Dig Me Out" are probably my favorites, though looking at your list, I would guess that their newest album "The Woods" is closer to your tastes.

Awesome, thanks for all the recommendations everybody. That's a lot to dig through. I didn't want to list everybody or everything I like, but that's a great bunch of bands I'll start sorting through. And regarding the "pop/punk" tag, I loathe labels and like all kinds of stuff, but my favorites seem to fall into that overall category more than others. I'm certainly not ashamed to say that I generally prefer more "radio friendly" bands, even though I don't listen to the radio. And I'm all about ska too, I've been procrastinating picking up the last couple Buck O'Nine CDs after one of them sucked (can't remember which). I think I'm going to do my best to grab a few tracks from as many of the bands listed above as I can and just take a shot on 4 or 5 of them.

Regarding your tastes, for Chixdiggit, I recommend their first album.

Goo Goo Dolls: "Hold Me Up"
Hagfish: 2nd album, whatever it was called
Less Than Jake: "Borders & Boundaries" & "Hello Rockview"; the b-sides album is very good too. As is the Grease tribute. All their other stuff isn't too good, in my opinion.
The Queers: "Love Songs For The Retarded"
Screeching Weasel: "Anthem For A New Tomorrow" & "My Brain Hurts"

i can't believe nobody mentioned mxpx yet! check out "life in general" or "slowly going the way of the buffalo." both great albums. i think they also have a greatest hits album out as well, so that might be a good place to start as well. but everything they've done since 98 is pretty awful, imo.

also, if you're into the dancey elements of panic! at the disco, i'd suggest checking out men women & children and head automatica.

I'm wondering if anyone knows what punk pop means anymore! FatTony & mndtrp know, but I guess the definition has changed these days.

Yeah, that's why I listed some bands I liked a lot first. I honestly have no idea what punk/pop means, but when I look up what I like that seems to be the overall heading. I always equated "pop" with popular/radio stuff, which would make sense for me if you combined that with punk, ska, alternative, rock, whatever. It's the underground/hardcore from any real "genre" stuff that I just can't get into, no matter how hard I've tried.

I'm reading some absolutely glowing reviews about The Exploding Hearts, but just read that they died in a van accident? That sucks, I was wondering why I might never have heard of them.

Just remember, EVERY band was "underground" at one time or another. That's half the fun of listening to underground music: discovering hidden gems.

Yeah, the Exploding Hearts died while on tour (I think all but one guy). Sad story. I don't think you'd like them though. Great band. They were one of those bands that were retro, but "got it".

Good point, good point. From my experience, for even the bands that I do like a lot now, a lot of their older albums while they were "underground" or growing or however we put it, aren't the same quality as their higher profile stuff. But it's still a valid issue and I'm looking for stuff I might have overlooked here.

I feel pop-punk to be the bouncy, happy, sometimes gooving, punk. Punk to me would be more along the lines of Black Flag or Minor Threat. Just as any other genre, it's one way to break it down. I try not to get too specific with my genres, but it's nice to be able to differentiate. For instance, I like metal. However, I don't like hardcore or black metal much.

Anyway, if you like ska, you have to go with The Might Mighty Bosstones Let's Face It. Excellent album.

i absolutely agree with THE MUFFS. the Muffs 1993 Self-Titled CD is pop punk bliss.
