Sonic Youth - "Rather Ripped" LP - June 13

http://sonicyouth.com/main/index.html

ALBUM:

SONIC YOUTH NEW LP "RATHER RIPPED" DUE FOR JUNE 2006 RELEASE

Sonic Youth are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming new record. Basic tracks were recorded with engineer TJ Doherty at legendary Sear Sound Studio. Sear Sound has been the site of recording previous SY albums 'Sister' and 'Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star', and Thurston's 'Psychic Hearts'. Overdubs were recorded with TJ at Sear Sound as well as with engineer Aaron Mullan at the band's own studio on Murray St. - A few vocal overdubs were even done at J Mascis' in house studio in Amherst, MA. with engineer John Agnello. The band spent the most of February mixing with John Agnello at Sear Sound and later at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ. Cover art for the album can be seen here.

The song list is:

1. Reena
2. Incinerate
3. Do You Believe in Rapture?
4. Sleepin' Around
5. What A Waste
6. Jams Run Free
7. Rats
8. Turquoise Boy
9. Lights Out
10. The Neutral
11. Pink Steam
12. Or

Geffen Records will issue the CD edition while the band's own Goofin' Records will release the vinyl edition of the new album.

This one has alrady leaked and if you liked the last one this one is more of the same but with a little bit harder edge. I really like it.

I thought Sonic Nurse was their best album yet, so obviously I'm salivating over this one.

As a YOUTH fan, I'm there. "Sonic Nurse" was a very solid effort. With their recent albums, I've found there would be three or so songs I could live without, the rest I liked, but "Nurse" barely had a clunker. Hopefully "Rather Ripped" will be the same.

Every track on the album is being streamed on their website. I'm enjoying it a lot so far. Definitely picking this up next week.

As an old fart, I'll still take "Sister", but Jim O'Rourke has clearly reinvigorated this band. Murray Street and Sonic Nurse were much better than I really expected them to be and as good as their classic period stuff. Kudos to them for realizing that they were (somewhat) treading water and needed to do something radical to get their groove back. Can't wait for the new album.

Jim O' Rourke is not on the new album. Check out the stream above, though. It's a pretty darn good album.

Just listened to it for the second time. Fabulous stuff. After 25 year in existance and a decade-long slide into declining returns and pretentiousness (IMO), it's amazing to see my all-time most favoritest band suddenly whip off three albums the quality of Murray Street, Sonic Nurse and now this one.
