Sex Pistols spit on Hall of Fame honor

By Chris Morris
The Sex Pistols have opted out on appearing at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The groundbreaking English punk rock group officially declined the honor -- to be handed out March 13 at a dinner and performance at the Waldorf Astoria in New York -- in a crudely scrawled, mispunctuated handwritten message posted on the band's Web site Friday.

"Next to the SEX PISTOLS rock and roll and that hall of fame is a piss stain," the statement read. "Your museum. Urine in wine. Were (sic) not coming. Were (sic) not your monkey and so what?"

The statement slammed Hall of Fame voters as "music industry people," and excoriated the high price of attending the exclusive event -- $25,000 for a table, "or $15,000 to squeak up in the gallery."

It concluded, "Your (sic) not paying attention. Outside the shit-stem is a real SEX PISTOL."

Other 2006 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame include Black Sabbath, Blondie, Miles Davis, Lynyrd Skynyrd and industry executives Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss.

Susan Evans, executive director of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said of the band's announcement, "They're being the outrageous punksters that they are, and that's rock 'n' roll."

The complete statement is posted at www.thefilthandthefury.co.uk
Not really a fan, figured there had to be atleast one here somewhere.

It kind of pissed me off that they were nominated while other more deserving bands are snuffed. Sure they were all about additude but their music is not good. (Cover versions of SexPistol Songs are better than the originals)

The Sex Pistols and RnR Hall of Fame just does not work. Nice statement too.

Thats the douchy-est statement possible and a good indication of why the RnRHOF sucks

Good point.

Why don't you guys hold another expensive reunion tour where you only play the only 10 songs you recorded? You know, out of protest.

I like the Sex Pistols, but not that much. When you get down to it, their direct contribution (i.e. not counting inspiration) is pretty weak. And their opinion of themselves is unbearable.

A bunch of poodle-haired wankers in spandex, no doubt.

I always love it when people complain how their shitty little fave cookie-cutter arena rock metal band isn't inducted.

Touche. (although to be fair, they recorded about 18 songs, including a couple covers, while Johnny was still in the band )

I agree that the HOF is lame, but at the same time, their statement seems like something that they were almost expected to say. A cartoonish, stereotyped "punk" statement, rather than an honest opinion of a bunch of guys hovering around 50 years old.

Just more pathetic grandstanding. I always feel weird when 50 year old rock stars try to act tough just because some people asked them to pay money.

Doesn't bother me.

None of them had any musical talent anyway.

I don't think the HOF is really an honor. The place is heavy on the R&B (way too much so) and has a ton of crap from Britney, n-sync, good charlotte, etc., just to make the place marketable to young people.

The Sex Pistols have made their mark on music with or without this "honor". And it's complete bullshit they would have to pay for a table - it's for THEIR HONOR!!!

I'm not even sure I understand most of the letter. It seems rather cliche, but if that's how they feel, go for it.

You know, I've seen John Lydon on television. He was intelligent and articulate, and brutal about other people's pomposity.

It's sad to see him falling into a different sort of role playing. If the Sex Pistols are going to be silly and juvenile, that condesending statement from the HOF is perfectly appropriate.

Hey, several marketing guys worked on that letter for quite a while to get just the right level of "punk" in it.

HOF inducts at least 5 bands every year. I'm sure they'll get to them eventually.

And good for the Sex Pistols! Anyone that comes out to say that the HOF is a piss stain is alright by me. Grandstanding? Come on, it's the Sex Pistols. No one should be surprised by their response.

And it's not like this is the first time an artist gave the finger to the HOF. Ozzy did a couple years ago, remember?
