"Forever In Blue Jeans" by Neil Diamond - question

Can anyone explain to me what this song is supposed to be about? Don't get me wrong - - I like to sing along with this song, it has a cool beat, et al, but I just...don't...get...it.

Here are the lyrics:

Money talks
But it don't sing and dance
And it don't walk
And long as I can have you here with me
I'd much rather be
Forever in blue jeans

Honey's sweet
But it ain't nothin' next to baby's treat
And if you pardon me
I'd like to say
We'll do okay
Forever in blue jeans

Maybe tonight
Maybe tonight, you and I
All alone by the fire
Nothing around
But the sound of my heart
And your sighs

Money talks
But it don't sing and dance
And it don't walk
And long as I can have you here with me
I'd much rather be
Forever in blue jeans, babe

I've always thought he's saying he don't care if they're not well off financially, as long as he has her.

It's about his love of "barely legal" pornography.

Actually, he wrote this song after killing a drifter to get an erection.

It's about the time when he saw a man drowning, but was too far away to save him, but another guy was closer, and didn't bother to save the drowning guy.

Fortunately, Neil doesn't exactly have to worry about $$ any more...heh

Now he can afford polyester slacks!

Seems like its a paean for the simple things. Neil doesn't need a lot of money, glitz and glamour, he'll do just fine with his wife, and kicking back in blue jeans, forever...

Now excuse me while I go hurl

This song is a thinly-veiled allegory about the nature of the universe and how it can be revealed through the study of quantum physics, particularly as it relates to Newtonian mechanics.

D'uh.

I keep hearing this and guess it's a quote, but where did it come from? Was it a concert or something? Cause it sounds nuts and I must hear it!

I always understood "Forever in Blue Jeans" but never got the line in "I Am...I Said" about no one hearing, "Not even the chair". It makes it sound like there's a time when chairs actually do hear and console you about your problems. Just not this particular time. I like the song, but that line always made me laugh. Jimmy Kimmel asked Neil about it recently, and he just looked kind of embarrassed and laughed it off, saying he had no clue what he meant by it either. I guess even good songwriters are entitled to silly lyrics every now and then.

Isn't that a little insulting to Blue Jeans? Did Levis ever sue?

There are many more pants that are cheaper than blue jeans - you got Old Man Pants, Bum Pants (are they the same thing, I think so), and Golf Pants.

I think it's pretty clear. He says something out loud out of desperate loneliness, but he feels so alone in the world that even the closest thing to him at that moment wouldn't have heard it (even if it could). Like the words just evaporate at the edge of his lips.

Plus, it was the drug-crazed early '70s. It made a lot more sense then, I'm sure.
