Ever had to re-buy a CD???

Ever had to re-buy a CD because you used it so much and took it so many places that it ended up getting scratched?

I have over 1000 CD's and I just had to buy another version of Ray of Light today. It's only happened once before for me with Erotica.

Anyone else?

DVD Josh 12-26-05 09:23 PM

Ray of Light huh? I'd consider that a sign :)

Brain Stew 12-26-05 09:38 PM

Pisces Iscariot; I didn't think that I played it that much, but one day the second track just got completely messed up.

Meathead 12-26-05 09:39 PM

That's the reason for backup copies... But yeah, GNR UYI-2 (and a few others) got scratched up before I got a burner. Now first thing I do is make a copy for the car and put the original on the shelf.

I repurchased Metallica's Black album 1 year later because My crappy old cd player at the time scratched up "Of Wolf and Man". I was kina embarassed because I originally bought it on the release date and I thought I looked like someone just following the heard when I rebought it

Jimmy Buffett's Songs you know by heart
I think my family has bought this cd about 5 times now due to losing it or getting it scratched

Yes.

PopcornTreeCt 12-27-05 01:04 AM

Quite a few after my car got stolen.

mndtrp 12-27-05 01:30 AM

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine (three times replaced)
Metallica - Black album (twice replaced)
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar
and a few others.

I then purchased a cd burner, and that solved all problems of replacing cd's.

Nick Martin 12-27-05 01:33 AM

Being a soundtrack listener, having to repurchase a CD is hell for me- because they are so damned expensive compared to a pop/hip hop/etc album...but yes, I've had to do it a few times.

Now I can back them up on standard CDs, and have everything collected on MP3 CDs.

zekeburger1979 12-27-05 01:49 AM

I've rebought Nirvana's Nevermind and Smashing Pumpkin's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness because of scratches that rendered some tracks unlistenable.

Cusm 12-27-05 08:28 AM

Yes, but not due to scratching. I now have to buy my entire Cure collection for the 4th time (1st cassette, then CD, replace after car breakin) since they are re-releasing them with bonus tracks and improved recordings. Bastards, I already paid for the right to use this material, should they not replace this and scratched cds for free?!

iggystar 12-27-05 10:55 AM

You must have missed my post about using CDs as coasters back when they first came out and I found out, by walking on them on my bedroom floor, that they were not indestructible.

Or when I decided to take better care of my collection by using a CD carrying case and by mistake leaving it in the car and having little bubbles form on all the CDs.

I've repurchased so many CDs it's sickening.

cactusoly 12-27-05 11:00 AM

Oh yeah, I repurchased the entire Judas Priest Collection when they were remastered.

marcellusk 12-27-05 11:17 AM

Notorious BIG first cd and Jay'z's first cd. Biggie got stolen and Jay was too scratched.

Gunshy 12-27-05 12:08 PM

Yes, but only those stolen by others :(

I'm pretty anal when it comes to my collection IE nobody touches them except for me and sometimes my SO.

Anybody ever tried any of those D-Skin Protective Condom...ummm, I mean, CD skins? I wonder if they really work.

mike1978 12-28-05 04:26 PM

No. I take care of my CDs by storing them in the cases, so even the oldest ones (purchased in 1991) are in like-new condition.

rw2516 12-28-05 04:48 PM

As to the structural integrity of the cd disc. I once took a cd-r and buried it in the backyard. Dug a hole, threw it in without a case, just the disc, and covered it with dirt. Left it buried for a entire year. Through rain, snow, temperatures cold enough to freeze the ground solid as rock. Dug it up, washed the mud off under the kitchen sink, dried it with a dish towel, stuck it in a player and it played perfectly.

No they shouldn't. If they were guaranteed against scratches, they should. As for the new releases, they do not affect the old ones. If you only want the actual albums, you already have them. If you want the new material, you're going to have to pay for just like everybody else.

Sorry for the mini-rant, but it really cheeses me off when people think they own their music in perpetuity.

reverie 12-29-05 07:51 AM

I don't think I have had to do so yet. I'm very anal about my stuff.. Though cases do break over time, but for the most part, they're replaceable (still sad about my one Monkees compilation with a lenticular type case that has a crack in it :( ).

I did have to rebuy a tape once. I was in an accident (with a fence, my stupid fault) and the tape that was in at the time got screwed up.

What's a Lenticular case?

Not sure if I used the right terminology, but do you know those plasticy things like on cards that if you move them they display a different image or it makes it appear as if the picture is moving? Like the Batman Begins exclusive cover at Best Buy (there we go!).

Anyway, it's that material, but built in to the front of the case basically. It's this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=music
but not the pic Amazon has up, the one underneath it in customer images of the group pic of the four of them.

Deftones 12-29-05 10:09 AM

Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies. Then about a year later I found the one I lost.
