Tiny Mix Tapes' Top 25 Album covers of the Year
A pretty good list actually:
http://www.tinymixtapes.com/year2005...bum_covers.htm Fully agree with their #1. |

I consider myself moderately hip in musical knowhow, but i might have to change my self-appraisal... I haven't heard of a single band on that list. Nice pictures, though.

There were 3 albums on there that I didn't get around to listening until that list was published but now, I am caught up and I am really glad I end up listening to that Feathers record despite not so awesome word of mouth. I think it is excellent. Funny thing is that Islaja album at #1 is probably also one of my favorite albums of the year.

Yes, every CD is hand-painted. I think the cover to X&Y is better than many things on that list. I think the cover to The Mouse and the Mask is great in how it references its many sources in so many ways (the aged comic book parchment, Doom's mask, Mickey Mouse, pirate flags, etc.). And I like the simplicity of the Stars of CCTV cover. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg But then again, I'm not some preening, self-important blogger who then lists Amerie in their best-songs-of-the-year list like they're trying very hard to be Pitchfork. |
Personally, I still love this one:

I never heard of any of those bands.

Yes, every CD is hand-painted. It's not just the fact that there are 250 unique covers that's interesting; the rest of the packaging is also very impressive. Very promising DIY-type stuff coming from these guys, with some great artists on board (the Pet Politics EP is great)! |
I'm finding it hard to believe how few people have heard of John Fahey. :jawdrop:

Also, every cover been hand painted is very common for cd-r releases. If those were going to be included, many covers would be knocked off that list but I do think they would be too pretenious (myself included) to include a mock Freedy Johnston rip-off on there. Dangerdoom is a cool cover but MF Doom always has nice covers for his records. |

You should check out that Islaja record, it is truly wonderful. Their #2 pick for album picks is also probably in my top 10 of the year, the Feathers album is a short and sweet freak folk record sort of in the vein of the Danielsons if they weren't so odd. The records I don't care for that much on the list is the Earth and the Twilight albums.

The idea behind that collaborative article was just to write a blurb about certain songs we liked throughout the year and put them all together as a list of very different songs that we find interesting. If anything, I think it shows the diversity of tmters' taste in music. btw, thanks for reading. |
