This is the first Lips album I've heard that I would classify as mediocre.

I am astonished at the people who are colling this album average. The album is original, both poppy and experimental, while still being grounded in melody, which is something that parts of yoshimi lacked. It has a tremedous meddle era floyd ripoff in Pompeii that even though you know it completely steals one of these days and the middle of echoes, you still love it. It's a good if not great lips album, which makes it better than most things put out in the last few years. I definitely think it's better than yoshimi, on par with the soft bulletin, and close to transmissions and hit to death.

The Soft Bulletin is one of the top 10 albums of the past 10 years. This is not even the best album to come out this year.

I never understand why people like TSB so much. I mean I like it... but it isn't one of my top lips albums.

I've done this a few times, and it's pretty darn amazing. First time through, me and some friends set everything up in his house (in different rooms), and it was like walking around a big pair of headphones.

This week's prices:

Best Buy: $11.99
Circuit: $11.99
Target: $11.98

And a reminder that the DVD-Audio version will be out sometime later this year (personally waiting on that, myself--although I might not be, if I hadn't yet acquired the album through various, nefarious means. . .)

And for those who missed them on Letterman last week:

Traditional Pitchfork slam. It's more accessible and melodic than their last album (Yoshimi) so it has to be a step down. I personally think it may be their most complete album ever. It does cover a lot of ground but it does it well. It's not as orchestral as Yoshimi (which I find average) and Soft Bulletin (which I love), but I still think it gets the job done well.

I'll be waiting for the DVD-A version, no point in buying an inferior version. I wish they released it at the same time, but that way I guess they wouldn't get double dippers.

My Best Buy broke the street on this. Album is good...like a direct continuation of Yoshimi.

It doesn't even sound like the same band as Yoshimi.

AWWTM is hard to get into... It's not very melodic and not instantly accessible like Yoshimi or The Soft Bulletin. I'll have to give it another listen later.

I was at there on Saturday night, and "Race for the Prize" totally blew my mind! It was like a New Year's party, four months late. Thought the "Bohemian Rhapsody" cover was kind of lame, though...and the balloons were distracting at points...other than that, it was a great show!

Reported in post #49 by yours truly:

From The official Lips website

Also, for the vinyl lovers out there, 'Mystics' will be coming out on some stunning heavyweight vinyl - 2 discs in beautiful gatefold packing etc. Note though that the enhanced sound and extras DVD issue of the record will now not be available until later in the year.

it pains me a lot to say this as i love the Lips, but this album is a real letdown. i've given it a few listens and it just isn't sitting well. i like the Yeah Yeah Yeah Song. there are one or two others that are okay or good, but the rest seems like filler. i haven't given up hope that it will grow on me, but as of right now, it's not what i hoped for. *le sigh*

I've got to agree with DrRingDing on this one.

At first listen I didn't care for Yeah Yeah Yeah, but after several more listens I really like it.

Vein of Stars and Mr. Ambulance Driver are good, and a couple others are OK, but so far I think this album is a far cry from TSB and Yoshimi.

Several of the non album tracks from Yoshimi are way better than a lot of the stuff on The W.A.N.D. (like Up Above The Daily Hum and Sunship Balloons, just off the top of my head).

I'll keep streaming it from their website as long as they have it there, but I'll be waiting for the surround version before plunking down my money.

I'll keep myself busy with the surround version of TSB and Joe Morales' Zaireeka project video.

And it's a shame that they're only playing Chicago via Lollapalooza on the upcoming tour. As much as I want to see them live, there's no way I'm going through that to see them.

Crap, I just check Itunes and their version of the album comes with the additional songs: "Bohemian Rhapsody(Queen Cover)", "The Gold In The Mountain Of Our Madness" & "Yeah Yeah Yeah Song (Long Version)". Errrrrrr

I'll wait on the DVD-A release (with hopefully a CD with it).

I have been wanting to pick up the new Soft Bulletin DVD-A with the Cd but I remember there were some problems with it. Have there been any reissues with fixes?

i didn't think it was likely... but this album is starting to grow on me. slowly. it will never be at the level of Yoshimi or SB, though.

gonna keep listening to it.
