I'm thinking of hitting Best Buy on the way in this evening... But, I'm about 99% sure they won't have it. Maybe a CD store instead... Itching to hear the Hi-Rez mix.

Well, I picked it up yesterday at Borders using one of those 20% off coupons. It was still $19, but oh well.

It sounds good. I've only listened through the surround mix so far, but I liked it. The mixing job isn't as good as Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, but it still has a lot of interesting things going on. Some of the jumps between speakers seemed a lot harsher than on Yoshimi. On the previous disc things seemed to flow smoothly from speaker to speaker, and on this one there are a few tracks where it kind of clicks between speakers. I'm not sure if I can describe it much better than that. I still liked it, though, and am glad I picked it up.

I picked it up, but have not gotten home w/ it yet. I will listen to it tonight, obviously. One thing that I was disappointed in was that Elliot Sheiner (sp) did not mix it, as he did Yoshimi and Beck's discs. That man is golden in what he touches for surround. I wonder why he did not work on Soft Bulletin?

It was stupid to put the drums in the left channels of race for the prize. Although it was the same mix as on the VOID disc, so i guess i should not have been surprised.

Despite the other posts on here to the contrary, yes, the CD is the same as the original CD release. The track listing has been tinkered with on the DVD-A but not on the CD. They don't make this clear anywhere on the packaging or even print the correct CD track listing anywhere on the case or in the booklet.

I hear there's word on the lips MB and the steve hoffman forums that the disc should have been the new track listing, and that the discs will be available to be sent in and replaced in about a week.

From The Lips Mailing List:

The Soft Bulletin shipped with the wrong CD... it should have been the new rockin' re-mastered version (it really does sound awesome!!!!) that matches the playlist on the tray card. Don't take them back to the store.... mail the CD to the FLips PO Box and they'll send you a new disc with a personal apology from Mr. Michael Ivins... sound good? It's going to take a week or so (??) to get the correct discs in before we can send them to you.

PLUS!: The DVDA spec changed at some point and as a result, some models (Pioneer) can't play the DVD... I'll keep digging to find out which ones. The DVD is good... the DVDA consortium is screwy.

Send the CD only to:
Flaming Lips
Soft Bulletin Screw-Up
P.O. Box 3265
Edmond, Oklahoma 73083

Sorry guys,
George

Well, I'm in this boat - my Pioneer won't play the darn thing. Hope they do something about it...

Its funny over at the Hipinion forum, someone got banned for saying they had a leak of the album and the moderator put up a timer that said, "If I don't get to hear this album by the end of this timer I am going to ban you." My friend Kelly said she heard it and said it was a top 10 record.

Well, shit, Circuit City had this for $13.99 and I couldn't resist.

Guess I'll be sending mine in. Anyone else do this already?

AWWTM has leaked, it's good but different, I think it'll be a grower not a shower.

I like this. Sounds inmistakably flaming lips, but is impossible to characterize. I think this has a great chance of being their best reviewed album ever.

After 2nd and 3rd Listen: Best album of the year so far. Pompeii Au Gatterdammerung is one of the greatest songs of all time. Sounds like a cross between One of These Days and the middle of Echoes.

after a first listen of this album, i have to say that i think it's terrible. not a good hook anywhere to be found, not anything remotely interesting sounding. this actually makes "clouds taste metallic" not at the end of my Lips list anymore.

Are we listening to the same thing? I'm only four songs in and each one of these are candy-filled delights. Yummy! I might need to go brush my teeth afterwards.

(edit... 8 songs in and I like every song so far)

I've listened to the album as well and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Are the songs "candy-filled delights"? No, but they're all still very, very good, imo.

It's definitely far from terrible, and to say that there's nothing remotely interesting sounding on the album is a little extreme to say the least.

To each his own, I suppose.

Certainly doesn't jump out as instantly as the last two or their earlier stuff.

I'm getting into the prog rock of "The Sound of Failure/It's Dark...Is it Always This Dark??".

I'm really into that "Pompeii" track near the end.

From The official Lips website

Also, for the vinyl lovers out there, 'Mystics' will be coming out on some stunning heavyweight vinyl - 2 discs in beautiful gatefold packing etc. Note though that the enhanced sound and extras DVD issue of the record will now not be available until later in the year.
That's disappointing. I was looking forward to a simultaneous release with the regular CD. Oh well--I'm enjoying the new album now, and I guess I'll continue to enjoy it until the enhanced version comes out sometime later. . .
