He is amazingly fast but I couldn't make it through the song. It's not my kind of music but I appreciate his capability.

Another video (no vocals):

Cool drumming, but the vocals really suck.

dick_grayson 12-21-05 09:23 AM

yeah, I'm no fan of vocals like that either. I just drown it out.

the drummer is 20, by the way

Snowmaker 12-21-05 11:55 AM

Doesn't seem any faster than any other death metal drummer.

that's true, but his blasts are very tight and his stamina/chops are amazing. I'm not sure how many bpm he's doing and I'm sure Tim Yeung or Derek Roddy can rock that fast, but it's still pretty damn fast for a (then) 19 year old. My drum teacher has been playing for 20 years and won the World's Fastest Drummer for hands and feet and I'd bet he can't play like that for that long. The thing is that when playing that fast, there's little room for groove and finesse. You can't just go from playing a million miles an hour to Tom Sawyer or YYZ fills.

exactly. I'm sure Mike Portnoy could do the same a few years back when he was at the top of his game, but speed does not equal good. Cool yes, but there is no groove, it has to serve the song and have a melody or rhythem to it.

Cookie monster kills it for me too. I had a co-worker that sang like that in a group and blew out is vocal chord(or something to that extent) and had to wait two years until he could afford surgery to fix it. So for two years he sounded like Harvey Firestein trying to whisper when he talked. Not cool.

Snowmaker 12-21-05 02:31 PM

Yeah, he does lead vocals for a lot of those bands.

I've always thought this guy was amazing. (even though i've never seen them live)

Buford T Pusser 05-10-06 12:01 AM

I'll share with my three-year-old that loves drumming. Thanks

Turd Ferguson 05-10-06 10:19 AM

Neal Peart owns them all.

If you want metal dumming, Tomas Haake is pretty hard to beat in terms of technicality, groove and speed.

dick_grayson 05-18-06 10:17 AM

Here's another good one. Not metal, but still pretty nuts. I don't think this guy (Mike Mangini) has ever put his stick down.

I always lliked Frost from Satyricon/1349. There are faster drummers out there though.

porieux 11-14-06 08:52 PM

Just typical blastbeats, pretty easy once you get the double bass thing down.

There are much better drummers out there obviously :)

That's the the man right there. Mangini is ridiculously great.
He's unsurpassed in regards to technique.
Virgil Donati is another monster drummer.
Bill Bruford owned the 70's.......
