Please help me identify this band

I saw this video on TV in Thailand a month ago. The band is a Caucasian trio, the singer has a medium sized afro and was singing in falsetto voice. The song could best be described as modern prog-rock, ala Mars Volta. Towards the end of the song, the keyboard player, who has dishwater blonde wavy hair, had a nice solo.

The video was shot in a desert in sepia tones. I didn't write down any lyrics, expecting credits at the end, but there were none. The video was part of a top 50 countdown, so I suspect the song is somewhat new.

I know this isn't much to go on, but I hoping maybe someone in this forum is a fan of the band and will recognize them.

Thanks!

From the descrition, it sounds like Coheed and Cambria.

TheMadMonk 12-03-05 03:12 PM

I second the Coheed and Cabria vote.

greentree 12-03-05 04:18 PM

Thanks for the responses. But it's not Coheed and Cambria. I just viewed two videos from their newest album, and it's not them.

Brazil sort of sounds like Mars Volta but I don't think any of them sport Afros. Dredg, maybe.

greentree 12-04-05 10:30 AM

I checked out both Brazil and Dredg, neither of them fits the bill. I do like the sound of Dredg, if nothing else, at least I've discovered a new band.

Thanks !

Could it be Muse? I'm only going on your clues of being a trio and the singer singing in a falsetto voice.

maybe Hot Hot Heat? Not really prog rock, but their lead singer has a curly-fro.

Good call.

greentree 12-05-05 09:55 PM

Thanks for the suggestions. Definitely not Muse, they are one of my favorites. I checked out Hot Hot Heat, but not them either. This band was more in the metal/prog genre.

Thrush 12-06-05 02:34 AM

Three is kind of prog metal, so is Kaddisfly , dont know what either of them look like though.

Tenacious D 12-07-05 09:46 AM

greentree, try looking around here and see if you can find it. Maybe the page can be translated. Just an idea. Lots of band names I don't recongnize in that list.

Jackslade 12-07-05 10:15 AM

is it alkaline trio?

greentree 12-07-05 06:33 PM

I checked out Three, Kadisfly, and Alkaline Trio, but none of them look right. MTV Thailand is down right now, when it comes back I'll try there as well. The video was on one of the English language chanels, I suspect the show (an perhaps the band) is British. The most striking thing about the song was the keyboard solo at the end, it had an almost caliope / circus music sound to it. Wish I'd thought to write down some lyrics ...

:(

outside of the bands look it sounds like you are refering to dream theater.

Tenacious D 12-08-05 06:29 AM

Except Dream Theater isn't a trio, are they? I thought they had like 5 members.

Well the caliope keyboard solo definitely sounds like DT. Particularly The Dance of Eternity off Metropolis: Part II - Scenes from a memory. James LaBrie can definitely hit the high notes as well, problem is, TDOE is an instrumental.

Also, like mentioned, there are 5 guys and none have a fro.

Not Dream Theater, unless they hired ringers to be in their video, like CC Music Factory once did. I haven't listended to Dream Theater in years, love the Change of Seasons EP.

adumbc 12-09-05 03:19 PM

Don't think this is the band, but since you haven't found your answer yet, thought I'd throw it out anyway.

Is it 'Gogol Bordello'?

Your mention of circus music got me thinking it might be them. They're kind of gypsy-ish.

greentree 12-10-05 11:48 PM

Thanks for the suggestion, adumbc, but it's not Gogol Bordello. I picked up their latest a few months ago ... good stuff, espically "Start Wearing Purple".

TheMadMonk 12-11-05 12:18 AM

Prog-rock, caucasion trio, dishwater blond on keyboards, and high-pitched singer; sounds like you saw a old Rush video with Geddy wearing an afro wig, and Alex playing a keyboard solo.

greentree 12-23-05 10:04 AM

Found the band! It is Wolfmother, from Australia. Song is "Mind's Eye". Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, got some great ideas on similar bands to investigate.

Michael Corvin 12-23-05 10:34 AM

Cool. I was getting ready to bump this to see if anyone came up with it. Never heard of those guys.
