Rank 'Em as You Hear Them 2005

OK, let's try and keep each other informed here. What are the standout releases so far this year? I'll compile all the information.

Please keep this to albums from 2005 (no reissues), not albums you just started hearing now. Maybe I will tally this up at the end of the year. Try and keep your list in one post (edit!). Also, if you list the albums, tell me at what point your poorly-rated albums start.

DVDTalk's Ten Favorite Albums of 2005 (as of mid-year)

  1. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
  2. Beck - Guero
  3. Coldplay - X&Y
  4. Ryan Adams & the Cardinals - Cold Roses
  5. British Sea Power - Open Season
  6. Doves - Some Cities
  7. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
  8. Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
  9. LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
  10. The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
(Out of over 190 albums).
How does the overall ranking work?

These are ranked using a super-secret formula which only I alone know. I will assume everyone is putting their albums down in a particular order unless they say otherwise, and if you group albums into groups (Great, Good, Bad), they are ranked within the group, unless you say otherwise. If you have a long list in no particular order and nothing is in categories you misunderstood the whole point of the thread.

Everyone's votes count the same, regardless if you have been here 5 years or 5 days. The more votes there are, the more I will expand the top rankings.

Here's my list so far:

  1. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Jeez, I bought a lot of albums so far this year. They're all pretty good except for some of the Bright Eyes album (can't stand the guy's whining), some of the Lemon Jelly (not as good as their first two) and most of "Push the Button" (seems derivitive and feable after repeat listening if you ask me).

Dude, WTF. 66 albums and four months and rank amazing albums by Mars Volta, Z-Trip, Doves and King of Leon below a well-past-their-prime (if they ever had one) Limp Bizkit? I don't know what to say...

I am also surprised anyone likes the new GARBAGE record, they really need to get rid of the electronic crap and start playing instruments and concentrating on song writing.

Didn't realize Natalie Imbruglia was out with another album, thanks for the heads up, I do enjoy her music.

I think I've only listened to the new Ani Difranco, Stars, Idlewild, and Fischer Spooner. All pretty decent. I need to get Beck, Stereophonics, and NIN soon.

For me it's

1)Ryan Adams - Cold Roses
2)John Butler Trio - Sunrise over Sea
3)Beck - Guero
4)Ben Folds - Saving Silverman

That's all for now and there's still new albums by Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, Foo Fighters, Nickel Creek, 2 more from Ryan Adams and possibly Pearl Jam

I saw them live about four years ago and they did NOT play their instruments. Good show and it didn't bother me, but just an FYI.

Ivy - In the Clear
The Raveonettes - Pretty in Black
Kasabian - Kasabian (us release)
Wedding Present - Take Fountain
The Decemberists - Picaresque
Pitty Sing - Pitty Sing

My rankings here were fairly arbitrary, as I love all of the above albums, and choosing which ones I like more will probably vary day by day. I just picked up The Raveonettes last night, and it is stellar.
