New Belle & Sebastian album: The Life Pursuit (February 2006)

http://www.nme.com/news/belle-and-sebastian/21375

Belle & Sebastian name new album

It's out in February

Belle & Sebastian have named their new album 'The Life Pursuit'.

The follow-up to 2003's Mercury-nominated 'Dear Catastrophe Waitress' is out on February 6.

The spent the summer in Los Angeles' Sunset Sound studios with Beck producer Tony Hoffer working on the record.

Singer Stuart Murdoch told NME the seven-piece group threw out their regular instruments as part of the writing process for the new album.

He revealed: "The process of making the record has been amazing. The last record had quite a few older songs on it because we were working with Trevor (Horn) and we wanted to give them a proper go with big arrangements. This record is all new songs - 18 of them - so it's all very current. It's us pretty much writing in a circle and writing within the group."

Working titles include 'Song For Sunshine', 'Funny Little Frog', 'Sukie In The Graveyard', 'Another Sunny Day', 'Act Of The Apostle Part I' and 'A White Collared Boy'.
I can't believe it has 18 tracks, but if "Another Sunny Day" is anything to go by, this album should be great.

Here is my old thread with the original album title. It has a little more info:

I was seriously underwhelmed by Dear Catastrophe Waitress.

Same here. The Push Barman to Open Old Wounds collection was great though.

Thanks- I did a search but nothing relevant came up for me.

auto 10-31-05 02:44 PM

No problem. That thread never really took off and I only linked it for the info.

DCW was schizophrenic. They obviously are going in a new direction, but that album was being pulled in two different ones. The new stuff I've heard has been very good.

I loved Dear Catastrophe Waitress. I hope this one is good, but I'm worried about the "We just went around in a circle writing songs" quote, because, let's face it, the band is the best when Stuart takes the reigns and leads them.

I did, too. I can't get enough of the last cut that sounds like one of the best Squeeze songs Squeeze never did.

Waitress took a few listens for me to care (and a whole year) and I was a Belle and Sebastian completist buying an original issue of Tigermilk. Listening to Waitress sort of killed me inside a little. It was like the Green album all over again.

Yeah, that song has made it on a few mixtapes. Good stuff.

Ouch. That is easily the most harsh thing I've ever heard about Waitress.

Tracer Bullet 11-02-05 10:42 AM

I thought Fold... was much worse than DCW.

Agreed. Although that is one of the reasons I thought DCW was ho-hum. Stuart needs to once again take control and craft an album as good as IYFS. The fact that this new LP has 14 tracks is a bad sign IMHO. A little Belle & Sebastian goes a long way.

That's never going to happen. Stuart changed the direction of the band with Arab Strap, and they're not going back. I love IYFS, but it came out in 1996. They're pretty much an entirely different band now.

Interesting...

The time for teasing is over.

The "surprise" album, alluded to in our previous mail, is "If You're Feeling Sinister: Live At The Barbican". This download-only album, which pisses all over any bit torrents you may have heard, will be available exclusively from iTunes on December 6th. As a further incentive to follow the path of righteousness, all proceeds will be donated to the DEC's Asia Quake Appeal.

We are fairly sure it's going to be available in all the International iTunes shops from the above date, BUT it's not absolutely certain, and it's kind of outwith our control, so no promises in that department. Bear with us though, because it will happen, and it's worth it, as anyone who was at the show could testify.

You can download iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/

Enjoy!
Cheers, B&S.
I have this gig, but I'm all over this if the quality is markedly improved.

Did anyone pick up the Books EP earlier this year? "Your Cover's Blown" was one of my favorite tracks by any band in recent memory. I liked Waitress as well and was glad to see them rebound after Fold Your Hands, which had its moments but was pretty lackluster overall.

Yes, the Books EP was great. Definitely better than the EPs they released in 2000-02.

If you like Waitress I believe the new album is going to be to your liking. I just heard the whole thing and it's fantastic. Lots of poppy numbers.

"Another Sunny Day" is available for download from Matador:

I second that! I can't stop listening to this album!

It's actually nice to hear B&S sounding much happier, these days.

I have to say that Marx & Engels is one of my favorite B&S songs and that the I'm Waking Up to Us Ep is great.

I've been listening to the album pretty much non-stop since yesterday. It's easily their most consistent release since If You're Feeling Sinister, and I think it's just as good, albeit in a completely different way.
