Can we please just try to play without the justifications and insecurities?

However, what's your reasoning for not going with Luxe & Reduxe?

IMHO, this contest is about picking nine great albums and one great box set.

S&E: Luxe & Reduxe, however cool it may be, is not the album I fell in love with. It may sound better and it may have dozens of b-sides and rarities included but all that pales in comparison with the first time I popped S&E into my car stereo and Summer Babe blew my mind.

Besides, it's not like somebody can take the deluxe version and trump my pick.

On the other hand, those remastered Talking Heads albums (remixed in 5.1!!!) we're too hard to resist.

Obviously I went for the more popular ones first, but my later choices will reflect this same methodology.

I took the same approach. My choices for the last few rounds will pretty much guarantee defeat.

I understand where you're going..

To me, part of the fun is the justifications and the discussions.

Maybe make a thread for discussion of the game, and keep the draft thread(this one) just for picks?

I think it's nice when people explain why they picked a certain album or even express their disappointment when an album they wanted to pick gets picked, but I don't think people should feel the need to act defensive with their picks or show their insecurities. A game is not fun when competitors go out and say they are not playing to win. It just ruins it for the potential winner, like its degrading their win-- "oh you only won because I was just playing for personal reasons". Those people should just start a thread that has lists of favorite personal albums.

Yeah, I like it too. I'm hoping I make it past the first two rounds so I can actually explain all my picks... especially the ones that are coming (which will ensure I win or doom me to exit in the first round :))

I get you now. Don't worry, I'm playing to win. :)

That's just an absurd argument.

First, if your problem is that I'm not taking the game seriously, then consider that I make time every workday to be among the first to make a pick, and I've got a list of potential albums picked out for each future round.

Second, if you think I'm insecure (whatever that pop-psychobabble term means anyway), then you misread my meaning, which is that music is extremely personal--to me, but also to many others--and that whatever happens in this game, it's still my favorite music. Not caring what others think about one's personal tastes seems more like security than insecurity.

Third, I'm following the rules, and beyond that I'm free to play the game on my own terms. I think this game is pretty fun--it's already led me to re-listen to some of my now-dusty old favorites--and I'm sorry if my post made the game less fun for you, but it's really strange that you would expect others to abide by some arbitrary personal rule that you have about when a game is fun or isn't.

Fourth, you will not see me "degrading" the winner's win. Much more so than in the DVD draft, I think every contestant so far has extremely solid picks. Things might change in the last few rounds, but for now I find every list immensely respectable (and, like others, own a large percent of the albums).

Anyway, I'm not offended by your post so much as just surprised that you would single out my post--which I considered a totally benign contribution to the game--as spoiling the fun, and I hope that no one finds this post offensive either.

orangecrush 10-29-05 06:46 AM

I think that Aphex's comment may have been more directed at me. To address it: I am playing to win. I just think that I may have blundered with a pick or two and when I look at my future picks, I am not sure that they are congruent with other people's taste in music. We will see. It would seem quite ridiculous to spend as much time on this game as I have if I were not playing to win.

I think the winner will have a mix of both. You could go by the list of best-selling or best-reviewed albums (say, VH1, Rolling Stone, Billboard) and then the winner would have a predictable and yawn-packed set of albums. (Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Nirvana, Pixies, Radiohead).

Not that it is a bad set of albums. It's just that there's no creativity in those picks. (And here I applaud Numanoid for picking Gary Numan first... that takes guts! :))

auto 10-29-05 07:57 AM

Nice to see we didn't lose you Flynn.

Those are some great picks.
