The problem is that there is a grey area here. Take, for instance, the example used above: The Doors: The Complete Studio Recordings. This box set collects the six proper albums that the band recorded but adds a seventh disc, 'Best of the '97 Box'. Therefore, this box does collect the lps but it also adds other rarities, etc. Should this set be included?

I think the rule, as it stands now, will work fine. That being said, if anyone thinks they can clearly define a standard for box sets that should or should not be allowed, I'm all ears.

In the case of the Doors box set above, instead of selecting the whole box, why not allow for single discs of a box set in a situation like this.

 I think we are making this needlessly complicated.

As maxfisher said:

I would think greatest hits sets would be ok as long as:
1) everyone's limited to 1 box set
2) someone selecting a box set doesn't mean that individual albums within the box set are off-limits for selection

Edited to add: I know with the Movie Draft Tournament, they allowed box sets as I outlined above. For example, someone could pick the Lord of the Rings Trilogy box set, but that didn't take the individual movies off the table for the rest of the participants.
I think this will work fine considering players are limited to one box set. It's not like somebody can pick 'The Doors - Complete Recordings', 'Led Zep - Complete Recordings', 'Talking Heads - Brick', etc. The trick is deciding which box set to pick and picking it before anyone else can.

To compare this to the dvd thread, that would be like allowing the bonus disc from the Star Wars trilogy to be counted, but not the set as a whole. I wouldn't have a problem with this, but can't imagine anyone would take advantage of that allowance.

I think we just need to decide whether or not box sets are allowed. Should we set up a poll? Like I said before, I think they should be allowed as the rules currently state, but I also think it will be a fun game either way. If we allow boxsets, there are probably enough that most people, if not everyone, would be able to choose a pretty kick ass set for the 1 they're allowed. If we don't allow them, everyone will just have to pick 10 albums instead of 9 and a collection. While each of these options might result in different strategies, as long as the rules are clear and consistent, I think either way is perfectly fair.

I'd like to be in.

DJLinus 10-20-05 09:48 PM

I'm down.

I haven't been following the games in the other forums, so I'm kind of hazy. Essentially, after all is drafted we're voting on who has the "best" collection? We're not going by subjective criteria like sales figures? This is a purely objective game, unlike most other fantasy games where results are based on quanitifiable attributes (i.e., wins/losses, homeruns, etc.)? (but if that's not the case, dibs on Thriller)

Yep. Fellow DVDTalkers will be voting on the "collections". What makes the game interesting, IMO, is choosing a lineup that reflects your personal tastes and is popular enough to pull in the votes.

DJLinus 10-21-05 11:46 AM

Okay, got it. Thanks.

DJLinus 10-22-05 08:43 AM

Just to clarify the whole boxed set thing, will multi-disc deluxe/ultimate/special editions dedicated to just one album count as a boxed set?

It would not but just try to use common sense. For instance, I would call Miles Davis: Bitches Brew - The Complete Sessions (4 Discs) a box set. Obviously there is a lot of unreleased material there even if it all came from the sessions for that one album. I will make a judgement call on any picks that could go either way. I don't think it will be a problem.

Looks like we almost have the 16 players that we need to make this a decent game. Hopefully, when the draft starts Monday, we will have some last minute additions. This should be fun.

DJLinus 10-22-05 10:24 AM

Okay. I don't want to play my hand, but there are some releases I'm considering picking that could go either way on the "boxed set issue," but I'm sure any issues will be easily resolved, like you said.

This is so music geeky, but I think it'll be fun.

auto 10-23-05 04:33 PM

Don't forget! The draft starts tomorrow, Monday, October 24th at 9 AM (PACIFIC)

J-Dubya 10-23-05 10:21 PM

Do we have to be around during daytime? Or can we make picks after work?

Canis Firebrand 10-24-05 06:37 AM

Sounds Fun. I'd love to take part, but it sounds like its too late?

Who is all taking part?

You need only to make one "pick" every 24 hours. The rounds will start at 9 AM Pacific. They last 24 hours.

Not too late. The opening round will start in about 20 minutes.

There will be a new thread and the list of players will be posted in the second post. New players can join up until voting begins. The draft lasts 10 rounds so, technically, new players can be accepted anytime during the first 10 days.

Canis Firebrand 10-24-05 10:53 AM

Cool.. :)

I'm in then. Can't wait to get in my first pick and see what everyone else picks.

monkish 10-25-05 12:34 AM

Great concept! I've been needing a reason to delurk... and a music-nerdy enterprise like this is the perfect incentive. :D

ChrisKnudsen 10-25-05 03:11 AM

Count me in too. I will email my 1st pick since it is past 9AM in the 1st day and 6 hours away to day two.

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 09:46 AM.
