Best Songs About a Boat or Ship?
Not about boating in general, or about sailing, but about a specific boat or ship (real or imagined).
Wondering if you can fill up a CD with good songs about a specific ship... The basis for this type of song would be Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and, say, Billy Joel's "Downeaster Alexa" or "Night Boat to Cairo" by Madness. Recently, we've got The Fiery Furnaces' "Blueberry Boat". Erasure's "Ship of Fools" for example, is not about a ship or a boat, despite the title. So, here's my attempt, and I will add your good suggestions. 1. Dionne Warwick - "Love Boat" (might as well get this one out of the way) 2. Madness - "Night Boat to Cairo" 3. The Doors - "The Crystal Ship" 4. The Fiery Furnaces - "Blueberry Boat" 5. Gordon Lightfoot - "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" 6. Beach Boys - "Sloop John B" (can't believe I missed this one!) I'm guessing we've got another 8-10 songs we could do, but I'm out of ideas. I haven't heard "The Downeaster Alexa" in about 10 years, so I don't remember if I really like it or not. |

There has to be a Decemberists song about a ship, right?

The Irish Rover by the Pogues (it's a fuggin' great song too)
On the fourth of july, 1806 We set sail from the sweet cove of cork We were sailing away with a cargo of bricks For the grand city hall in new york ’twas a wonderful craft She was rigged fore and aft And oh, how the wild wind drove her She stood several blasts She had twenty seven masts And they called her the irish rover We had one million bags of the best sligo rags We had two million barrels of stone We had three million sides of old blind horses hides We had four million barrels of bones We had five million hogs And six million dogs Seven million barrels of porter We had eight million bails of old nanny-goats’ tails In the hold of the irish rover There was awl mickey coote Who played hard on his flute When the ladies lined up for a set He was tootin’ with skill For each sparkling quadrille Though the dancers were fluther’d and bet With his smart witty talk He was cock of the walk And he rolled the dames under and over They all knew at a glance When he took up his stance That he sailed in the irish rover There was barney mcgee From the banks of the lee There was hogan from county tyrone There was johnny mcgurk Who was scared stiff of work And a man from westmeath called malone There was slugger o’toole Who was drunk as a rule And fighting bill treacy from dover And your man, mick maccann From the banks of the bann Was the skipper of the irish rover We had sailed seven years When the measles broke out And the ship lost it’s way in the fog And that whale of a crew Was reduced down to two Just myself and the captain’s old dog Then the ship struck a rock Oh lord! what a shock The bulkhead was turned right over Turned nine times around And the poor old dog was drowned And the lass of the irish rover |
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
a tale of a fateful trip. That started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship. The mate was a mighty sailin' man, the skipper brave and sure. Five passengers set sail that day, for a three hour tour, a three hour tour……… The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed. If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost; the Minnow would be lost. The ship took ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle, with Gilligan, the Skipper too, the Millionaire, and his Wife, the Movie Star, the Professor and Mary Ann, here on Gilligan's Isle. |
Downeaster Alexa - Billy Joel
Only one that came to mind, and it was in the first post. :) One of my favorites from him. |

Come sit right back and you'll hear a tale A tale of fateful trip That started from a small lake town Aboard two tiny ships The mates were a bunch of pole dancers But the waitstaff was too pure The Vikings team set sail that day For a three hour tour, a three hour tour The action started getting hot The dancers strutted their stuff If not for the prudes in the fearless crew There wouldn't have been such a huff The boats turned around and went back home The authorities came aboard But fear not friends, 'cause all's not lost The Vikings finally scored |

Sloop John B by the Beach Boys was also the first thing that I thought of.
For a change of pace: lead singer Mike Love's song, "Rockin' the Man in the Boat" although it's not really about a man or a boat. |
The great band the Beautiful South and "I'll Sail This Ship Alone".

Iron Maiden - The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Hear the rime of the Ancient Mariner See his eye as he stops one of three Mesmerises one of the wedding guests Stay here and listen to the nightmares of the Sea And the music plays on, as the bride passes by Caught by his spell and the Mariner tells his tale. Driven south to the land of the snow and ice To a place where nobody's been Through the snow fog flies on the albatross Hailed in God's name, hoping good luck it brings. And the ship sails on, back to the North Through the fog and ice and the albatross follows on The mariner kills the bird of good omen His shipmates cry against what he's done But when the fog clears, they justify him And make themselves a part of the crime. Sailing on and on and North across the sea Sailing on and on and North 'till all is calm The albatross begins with its vengeance A terrible curse a thirst has begun His shipmates blame bad luck on the Mariner About his neck, the dead bird is hung. And the curse goes on and on at sea And the curse goes on and on for them and me. "Day after day, day after day, we stuck nor breath nor motion As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean Water, water everywhere and all the boards did shrink Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink." [Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1798-1834)] There, calls the mariner there comes a ship over the line But how can she sail with no wind in her sails and no tide. See... onward she comes Onwards she nears, out of the sun See... she has no crew She has no life, wait but there's two Death and she Life in Death, they throw their dice for the crew She wins the Mariner and he belongs to her now. Then ... crew one by one They drop down dead, two hundred men She... She, Life in Death. She lets him live, her chosen one. [Narrative] "One after one by the star dogged moon, too quick for groan or sigh Each turned his face with a ghastly pang and cursed me with his eye Four times fifty living men (and I heard nor sigh nor groan), With heavy tramp, a lifeless lump, they dropped down one by one." [Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1798-1834)] The curse it lives on in their eyes The Mariner he wished he'd die Along with the sea creatures But they lived on, so did he. And by the light of moon He prays for their beauty not doom With heart he blesses them God's creatures all of them too. Then the spell starts to break The albatross falls from his neck Sinks down like lead into the Sea Then down in falls comes the rain. Hear the groans od the long dead seamen See them stir and they start to rise Bodies lifted by good spirits None of them speak and they're lifeless in their eyes And revenge is still sought, penance starts again Cast into a trance and the nightmare carries on. Now the curse is finally lifted And the Mariner sights his home Spirits go from the long dead bodies Form their own light and the Mariner's left alone And then a boat came sailing towards him It was a joy he could not believe The Pilot's boat, his son and the hermit Penance of life will fall onto Him. And the ship it sinks like lead into the sea And the hermit shrieves the mariner of his sins The Mariner's bound to tell of his story To tell his tale wherever he goes To teach God's word by his own example That we must love all things that God made. And the wedding guest's a sad and wiser man And the tale goes on and on and on. |
