A tribute to Heart

As I was driving to work this morning, a Heart song called Barracuda came on the radio. It had this irresistible thumping beat, a sense of urgency, and the brilliant vocals of lead singer Ann Wilson. It immediately brought to mind a whole range of Heart songs that were made way back then, around the mid to late 70's to be exact: Crazy On You, Magic Man etc etc. I thought to myself how wonderful these songs were and how superior they are to what is out there today. I really feel sorry for today's youth who think they are getting "good songs" on the radio. Take me back to the days when music was made by people who loved music, thanks.

Brain Stew 10-14-05 05:21 AM

Eh....

Heart never really struck me as a particularly original band. Just kind of following the hard rock blues trend.

Trying to be a female answer to Led Zeppelin.

Here I thought there was a tribute album coming out. ;)

atlantamoi 10-14-05 07:57 AM

Agree with the first part of your post. The 2nd part is complete silliness.

As far as "good" music.. I guess it's all a matter of opinion, but my wife and I had a conversation like this last night. And as I said to her, my music buying, for as much as I love it, has really gone down, simply because the artists/music I like is going away. Sure I can find people I like here and there that are newer, but I don't listen to the radio, and I'm not a club/bar type, so my exposure is limited as is.

And I do like Heart by the way. :) And when they were coming about in the '70's, I probably didn't even exist.

I don't know what kind of music you truly love, but I'm pretty sure you could find new music you'd like. I remember reading this British yearbook in a bookstore at the end of 1984 and it was filled with bitching about how horrible the year was in music. I just laughed. There has not been one single year since rock n' roll started that hasn't had plenty of wonderful albums to shout about. Not one year.

That could very well be true, but with my limited exposure, is there anything else I could do to find new music? When I had more disposable income than I do now, I'd randomly shop off the bargain bins, and never really been disappointed with what I bought. Well.. The Call wasn't that great, but there are a couple good songs. ;) I don't mind any music but rap, hip-hop, that grundy all-bands-sound-alike sound that's so popular in rock these days, or country (well, country I don't mind, it's the southern vocalists I do..).

I couldn't narrow down any music particularly since I love so much of it, but one direction to give an idea is if I were in a band, I'd love to be in a 3 or 4 piece rockabilly band.

So anyways, speaking of Heart.. how was their last album? I think the last one I picked up of theirs was "Desire Walks On", and I liked that one.

Well, grunge hasn't been popular for about 10 years so your comments still don't make sense.

tommy28 10-14-05 01:47 PM

Then you'll love thier cover of "Rock and Roll". :D

Hollowgen 10-14-05 01:55 PM

this thread is a little strange.

i like heart, just like any other rock fan should, but to refer to their songs as superior...?

*sigh* Okay, maybe I'm not using the proper term.. as I said, I'm not exactly up on or fond of newer stuff in general. If I knew any band's names, I'd give an example. The only thing that comes to mind is the music video on Tomb Raider 2.. yeah, that's a big stretch, but it's what I've got right now..

Regardless, I think I got my thoughts across well enough in that post. But then again, maybe that's because they're mine! ;)

Jason 10-14-05 04:30 PM

While I'm not a big heart fan, they did have some decent songs from the 1970s. I do like "Crazy on You" quite a bit. The mid-80's stuff is terrible.

Agreed.

I can't even listen to their music from that era. Its sounds so cheesy and generic.

Give me "Barracuda" or "Crazy on You" instead.

nightmaster 10-18-05 09:05 PM

It amazes me how many people can threadcrap pretty much on any given topic.

Heart was a super band with a lead singer who could wail with the best of 'em.

animalmystic 10-18-05 09:13 PM

I am from Seattle so I gotta show some love to some of the local music.

Heart is def appreciated.

milo bloom 10-18-05 10:01 PM

Barracuda, Magic Man, Crazy on You are all great songs. I love most of that stuff from that era. But when it gets to "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You", we're talking icepick to the eardrums, anyone else?

art 10-18-05 11:15 PM

Ann's voice was unbelievable. And I like the imagination in their music. Just listen to Magic Man and you'll hear some sounds and arrangements that are unique. They're probably Canada's best ever export music-wise.

Good point, except they were born in California (San Diego and San Franciso, chronologically) and formed the band in Seattle in 1974.

Bara-coo-da! Du-du-du-du-du-du-du-dun.

CrAAAAz-ay on YEW!

He's a magic man, maw-ma!

Those songs are great. Not into much of the rest of their catalog (maybe Alone).

Alone is a great song; but I'd agree that the must-haves end at those 4

atlantamoi 10-19-05 06:21 AM

Which is worse? 1986 Heart or 1986 Starship?
