Wolf Parade thread

This has just taken over the New Pornographers latest as my favorite of the year and it is a pretty solid album...can't see it being replaced. Im listening to it with the same furvor I listned to Arcade Fire last year.

The year TOPs so far (no real order yet):
Wolf Parade
New Pornographers
Sufjan Stevens
Minmae
M. Ward
Sons and Daughters
Sleater-Kinney
Okkervil River
Bloc Party
Amusement Parks on Fire

I've been listening to an advance copy for the past few weeks, and it is definitely my favorite album of the year. I first heard them when they opened an unannounced Modest Mouse show at Webster Hall earlier this year. They blew MM away.

I think this is a completely solid album.

The only thing that disappoints me is the fact that more than a handful of the tracks have already been released on their EPs (granted, they have been rerecorded for the album). I expected to hear more new material from these guys because they're so damn good!

That aside, the album is excellent!

Picked this up yesterday on a blind buy after hearing so much good feedback here and elsewhere. I'll spin it tonight.

Between this and Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah it's been a good couple of weeks for music.

... on related note: is anyone else getting sick of this cheap cardboard packaging? not because i fancy hard plastic to cardboard or anything, but because you're almost guaranteed to scratch your brand new disc upon removing it from the sleeve!

Listened to it today, and I'm just not hearing it. Sounds kind of like Modest Mouse, and I'm not exactly keen on them, either. Maybe more spins will do the trick, but so far, it's leaving me cold.

Yeah, this record has a Modest Mouse Lite vibe to it.

I got this last night. Great album, a bit like Arcade Fire combined with lo-fi stuff like GBV or Sebadoh. Modest Mouse is definitely similar, but Wolf Parade has better songs on this one than Modest Mouse has on "Good News..." IMO.

This album seems to be yet another feature popular indie music memes:
-yelping singer a la Pere Ubu? yep
-wooshing and burbling analogue synths? yep
-no-wave faux Sonic Youth detuned guitar strumming? yep
-disco drum patterns sneaking about? yep
...etc.

I'm not complaining because I like the results. It's just funny to see indie seemingly become as conformist as pop...

Their stuff is pretty good... It took me a good 6 or 7 listens before I liked it, but once I got hooked... MAN!

Could the reason for the Modest Mouse vibe be, in fact, because
Isaac Brock himself produced the album?

The second side rocks so lovely. Tracks 7,8,9,10 are machine-gun solid.

The Wolf Parade record is overrated. Last year I did a top 500 list of best albums of the year. This year, though, I feel like I can't even do a top 10.

because people genuinely like it?

it's not an immediate classic, and can be challenging, imo.

you can't come up with a top 10 list for the year??? maybe you haven't been paying enough attention. this year has been pretty big for indie music alone.

The Wolf Parade record isn't great is what I mean by that it is overrated. I have listened to aprox 750 albums this year (at least one new album a day and more on the weekends) and really none of them are something that I have listened to over 50 times like I did last year that is really extroadinary?

Do you realize how rediculous you sound? You say that you listened to approx. 750 albums this year?! AND you say none of them were worthy of a 50+ listens unlike last year's crop of the 500 albums that you listened to?!

If you are going to stretch the truth, try to do it in a way where you may have a chance of making someone believe you are not actually full of utter bullshit. Your post deserves to be displayed as an example of how NOT to converse with people on the Internet.

Thanks for the laugh though.

that you've listened to 750 albums means that you probably haven't been able to fully absorb a single one of them, and therefore your opinion is not worth considering.
