...baby one more time is an EXCELLENT song.

I'm sure those "my musical taste is sophisticated and thusly I am as well", will find this list juvenile. I find the list full of classic, catchy songs that are good every time you listen to them. Don't be afraid to admit liking something just because it's popular.

AND just because YOU may not like the song....doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to be on that list.

What an odd and random list. For example, it's cool they've got a Magnetic Fields song on the list, but "A Pretty Girl Is Like" is the one they pick? Sarah Mclachlan's "Building a Mystery" is picked, not "Ice Cream"?

I'm sure I could nitpick a least 448 more choices, but I guess it's no more random than my list would seem to others if I were to list 500 favorite songs.

Wow. I thought I knew music pretty well.

By artist/title and not hearing the songs, I know 277 out of 500. And there are plenty of songs there that are great tunes, but you rarely hear them any more.

It's late. No time to elaborate now.

their words not mine
"the history of the past 25 years in 5 minutes" or something like that.
according to the article, the editors were required to listen to every song from the past 25 years, including b sides ect.

anyone want to begin on songs that aren't on the list
"jesus walks", hell the one song that has the balls to sing about jesus in a rap song
under the bridge

The list is garbage and I have a few hundred nitpicks, but this is the one I will focus on.

369. "Teenage Dirtbag" - Wheatus

That shit sits at 369, but no where is TOOL's 46&2 - a song that dominated rock radio for an entire summer.

Ugh, this stuff pisses me off.

I like this list.
Songs that people dont remember are usually the best ones.
They dont get played out on the radio.
Lots of good stuff there.(some crap) but good stuff!

043. "Hurt" - Johnny Cash (2002)

The last great moment of the Man in Black, penned by the Goth in Black

Producer Rick Rubin presented Johnny Cash with some brilliantly unexpected song choices for his final albums, but none more inspired than Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt," whose "heart and soul and pain" Cash praised. On the final album released during Cash's life, his bare-bones performance -- just that magisterial croak, ravaged by illness and accompanied by old guitar strings -- found chilling intimations of mortality in Trent Reznor's angsty lyrics about addiction and loss. (Reznor has said he hasn't listened to his own version since he heard Cash's.) And Mark Romanek's devastantingly sad video, in which a shaky, 70-year-old Johnny looks back on his vibrant youth and remembers his wife June Carter in her prime, was recently voted "best video ever" in a British poll.

Ok, the more I read the list, the more I see glarring omissions.
I like how it is all over the place. And these lists are made to be bitched about. After all you cannot really put any song in a difinitive spot because every song on that list is someone's number 1.

But to see so many recent tracks that I don't believe have paid their dues (Stacy's Mom, We Are All On Drugs, Galang) ahead of twenty five year old songs that we still hear every day. That just gets me worked up. And then a majority of the songs on the list (in my opinion of course) can just be removed and replaced by good songs that actually matter.

Where are
The Ramones " I Wanna Be Sedated"
the Violent Femmes "Blister in the Sun"
The Chili Peppers "Under the Bridge." or any chili peppers for that matter.
Faith No More "Epic"

Phantom Planet's California is on the list...but Pearl Jam's Jeremy is not.
No one else seeing a problem here?

dicks.

Yeah complete joke, its more like a mp3 players party shuffle list. Than an all time greatest songs list lol. I mean cmon seriously, as for someone who cried pop haters, fraid not. This list is just that big a joke, frankly its insulting to a real music fan if you ask me.
