Garbage - No More?
 

I've worshipped Garbage for ten years now, and no band will ever come close to touching them as far as my musical taste goes. But it looks like the worst has happened...

Obviously anyone that even casually followed the band knew they had some serious problems after Beautiful Garbage, and it was unlikely that we'd get a fourth album. Then they made it sound like all wounds were healed and everything was peachy between all four members.

Well, it looks like something happened. First, Butch's mother died, so they've had a fill-in drummer on tour since then. Then they announced they'd decided to cancel the rest of their tour in Europe. Finally, apparently there's a new interview in the Melbourne Herald Sun where Shirley says ""We knew we had one last good album in us left." Then there's the kicker... "I want to make a solo album one day."

So it looks like, for all intents and purposes, Garbage is over. There isn't a press release by the band saying so, but going on almost any Garbage message board... Most fans realize it is. On a somewhat positive note, at least they ended with Bleed Like Me. I loved the band, but Beautiful Garbage just wasn't a "great" record. Bleed Like Me, on the other hand, was good enough that I'm content that they end their amazing decade together on that note.

Got to see them at a festival this year.

But at least I got to see them live once.

I have all four of their albums, so I will be disappointed if they never release another one. Beautiful Garbage was probably their weakest album, but it has my favorite Garbage song - Parade. I liked the Bleed Like Me album the best.

Many artists do a solo album, or even side projects, while taking some time off. Granted, they already took some time off before coming out with Bleed Like Me.

Unfortunate, as I hadn't had a chance to see them.

After that last album, who cares?

I guess this thread answers the question who cares. I wouldn't write them completely off since many a band has returned from the ashes.

To me it seems Garbage has run its course and that it will fizzle out. I don't think Vig and the others have the creative burn and chemistry they initially had and it just seems half ass now, it's no surprise that Shirley is looking to go solo. I've always kinda of thought as Garbage as a project rather than band, I guess mainly because of Vig's involvement.

Beautiful Garbage was a great album. I think Bleed Like Me sucks. That album wastes one of the band's greatests assets, Shirley's voice. They completely bury her underneath incesantly loud guitar so that you can barely hear her. Plus, there are only a few actually good songs on that CD. I was horribly disappointed. It may be time for them to break up.

Yeah I really liked Beatiful Garbage but Bleed Like Me was not so good (still alright though). Garbage live was always a disappointment, as there is really very little variation from the albums, so it seems like a waste of money.

They were never anything other than a watered-down Curve cover band anyway (half ;) )

I got to see them live this April and really enjoyed the experience. I think Beautiful Garbage was a wonderful album but I guess they didn't even like BG because they only played Cherry Lips as an encore.

I'm okay with them not releasing anything anymore. It's not like they were ever gonna top Version 2.0.....

Thank GOD we still have bands like the ones that were on the VMAs last night. :sarcasm:

Seriously though...if this is true, I hope they do find their way back to each other. While beautifulgarbage wasn't all that garbage & v2.0 was, Bleed Like Me brought them back to form.

I disagree completely. I've seen Garbage live twice and they were rgeat both times. In fact, I'd put them among the best live shows I've ever seen.

Garbage is a great live band. I saw them last week in Chicago, and they put on an excellent show (one of my pics below). And they played Cherry Lips and Shut Your Mouth, so they don't completely hate Beautiful Garbage.

They just taped an episode of PBS Soundstage, which will hopefully air soon. I hope it's not the swan song.

Damn, Matt Walker, isn't he the ex drummer from Filter, and filled in for the Smashing Pumpkins on the Mellon Collie Tour after the Melbourne, Chamberlin incident? It would of been awesome to see him play instead of Vig, cause Vig isn't the best drummer in the world.

I've seen Garbage live twice and both times they fucking kicked ass!!! Guitars cranked up, Butch on drums, and Shirley's beautiful voice.

If this is the end of Garbage, they ended on a high note. "Bleed Like Me" is a solid album.

Saw them once in Tempe and I will always treasure the experience. They were amazing and Shirley spoke to a large group of people who gathered by their tour bus, I was standing nearby, and she was very nice and extremely funny.

I hope that we get both new music from Garbage and solo stuff from Shirley. I treasure what I already have, but I hope to get a lot more...and they're worth waiting for.

I'm a huge Garbage fan and I've seen them live three times. I'd defintely be disappointed if Bleed Like Me was there last CD.

garbage is not breaking up
 

I saw them in San Francisco on 9/10 and they did a great show. Saw them in San Diego 9/14 and it was even better. During the SD show Shirley said to the audience that she heard the rumors about them breaking up and stated that they were not true. She then said they're "Garbage for life". So I don't think they're breaking up, just tired of touring after 6 months on the road and need a rest.

I got to see them at hfstival this year, and were easily the best act that i got to see as my glasses got broken in the pit at the very end of social distortions set. jesus fuckin christ, can people just once not mosh, and squeeze, and crowd surf. Hell, i was litterally pinned against the rail with little room at all during Interpol's set. Although, i did crowd surf during the garbage set, and was almost dropped!

Garbage Has No Plans to Split Up

SYDNEY, Australia - Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson says the Scottish rock band may be about to take a break after a grueling tour, but it is not planning to split up.

"We have discussed this and I don't think anybody is interested in breaking up," Manson told Australian Associated Press.

"We feel that this has been a really great tour and we feel that we have really muscled through and produced a great record, and we just want to take some time off while things are really good between us," she added.

The band announced last month it was canceling dates in France, Belgium and Britain in October.

"Having been constantly on the road since the beginning of March the band feel they have somewhat overextended themselves, and have mutually decided to conclude their tour at the end of September in Australia," Garbage said in a posting on its Web site.

Manson said she was desperate for some time off.

"I don't think I have seen a single green vegetable in three months, so I just need to get my life into some sort of sense of control," Manson said.

She also slammed Australian band INXS for using a reality show to find a replacement for its former lead singer, Michael Hutchence, who committed suicide in 1997.

Canadian vocalist J.D. Fortune was chosen as INXS' new lead singer for an upcoming tour as the climax to CBS show Rock Star: INXS.

"It isn't INXS without Michael Hutchence," said Manson.

"I feel like in life you have to be prepared to let go of something in order for new growth to occur in your life. And I think it is unhealthy to be constantly coming back to recreate the past," she added. "You should forge forward instead of being sentimental about things that have gone by."

thanks for the update...so this album seems like it is dead in the water, has any other singles been release? seems pretty quick for them to be taking a break. must be nice to only have to work a few months in the year :)
