I guess I should have realized that his description was actually pretty simple. :) |
I made a cd like this about 4 years ago, I'll have to dig it up.
Most popular name seems to be Mary. There are 3 songs listed above, here are some more: Proud Mary - CCR Mary Jane's Last Dance - Tom Petty... Crazy Mary - Pearl Jam Suite Sister Mary - Queensryche The Wind Cries Mary - Jimi Hendrix Few others off the top of my head: Della Brown - Queensryche Lady Jane - Queesryche Anna Lee - Dream Theater Jack & Diane - John Mellencamp Downeaster Alexa - Billy Joel (about a boat, but Alexa is his daughters name) |
Unless I missed it above, I can't believe with the Mary mentions no one thought of:
"Mary, Mary" -The Monkees Also (only listing what I own): "All The Young Girls Love Alice" -Elton John "Angeline" -Elton John "Annie's Driftin' Heart" -Sue Foley "Baby Jane" -Rod Stewart "Be My Yoko Ono" -Barenaked Ladies "Cappuccino Rosie" -Jason & The Scorchers "Caroline" -Fleetwood Mac "Christie Lee" -Billy Joel "Citizen Jane" -Bernie Taupin (it's been awhile since I've heard the song, but I think that's the title, from his "Tribe" album) "Cushie Butterfield" -Sting (don't ask who originally did it.. actually, not that I really know, but I think it may be 'traditional') "Dear Yoko" -John Lennon "Deborah" -Dave Edmunds "Don't Listen To Linda" -The Monkees "Donna" -Ritchie Valens "Emily" -Elton John "Enid" -Barenaked Ladies "Gina" -Stray Cats "Gloria" -Brian Setzer Orchestra "Hello Mary Lou" -Ricky Nelson "Jane" -Barenaked Ladies "Janie, Don't Take Your Love To Town" -Jon Bon Jovi "Jeannie, Jeannie, Jeannie" -Eddie Cochran "Joanne" -Michael Nesmith "Josephine" -Billy Joel "Lady Samantha" -Elton John "Laura" -Billy Joel "Leave Virginia Alone" -Rod Stewart "Louise" -Oingo Boingo "Maria" -Blondie "Maria" -Brian Setzer "Marie Provest" -Nick Lowe "Mary" -Oingo Boingo "Maybe Katie" -Barenaked Ladies "Me & Sara Jane" -Genesis "Michelle's Song" -Elton John "Miranda" -Fleetwood Mac "Miss Gradenko" -The Police "Maureen" -Nick Lowe "Oh Diane" -Fleetwood Mac "Peggy Sue" -Buddy Holly (and the sequal, "Peggy Sue Got Married") "Poor Jenny" -Nick Lowe/Dave Edmunds (a cover song) "Romeo & Juliet" -Dire Straits "Rosalinda" -Billy Joel "Rosie In The Middle" -Brian Setzer "(Be My Girl) Sally" -The Police "Sandy" -Air Supply "Santa Rosa Rita" -'68 Comeback Special "Sue's Boogaloo" -Sue Foley "Susie (Dramas)" -Elton John "Suzie Q" -CCR, though I forget who did it originally.. Screaming Jay Hawkins..? "Suzanne" -Peter Gabriel (cover of a Leonard Cohen song) "Switchboard Susan" -Nick Lowe "Take A Message To Mary" -Nick Lowe/Dave Edmunds (another cover song) "There Goes Lucy" -Rembrandts "Valleri" -The Monkees "Welcome To The Room...Sara" -Fleetwood Mac I'm sure I could think of more given time.. (in a constant state of editing...! Is my taste in music showing yet? ;) ) |
"Diane" - Hüsker Dü
|
"Edie" - The Cult.

I'm trying to limit these to what the OP said, titles that ARE girls' names, not just that have girls' names in the title: Sexy Sadie - The Beatles Peggy Sue - Buddy Holly Lucille - Little Richard Long Tall Sally - Little Richard Maybellene - Chuck Berry Nadine - Chuck Berry Wendy - The Beach Boys Windy - The Association Lola - The Kinks (you did say girls' names, not actual girls) Jolene - Dolly Parton Brandy - Looking Glass Liza - composers: Gershwin, Gershwin, Kahn Polk Salad Annie - Billy Joe Royal Short Fat Fannie - Larry Williams Delilah - Tom Jones Cherry Cherry - Neil Diamond Laura - composer: Raskin Diana - Paul Anka Oh! Carol - Paul Anka (a bit of a cheat, with the Oh!) Tammy - Debbie Reynolds Minnie the Moocher - Cab Calloway Sherry - The Four Seasons Jennifer Juniper - Donovan Delta Dawn - Helen Reddy Candida - Tony Orlando and Dawn Melissa - Allman Brothers (apparently the title isn't "Sweet Melissa") Jessica - Allman Brothers Sorry if there are any duplicates from others in the thread ... My musical knowledge goes up to about 1975 and no further  |

Personally, I started naming songs on the assumption that the OP meant to say "songs that have girls' names in them" or "songs that contain girls' names". I guess he can clarify if he wants. :)
<strike>Julie, Do Ya Love Me - Bobby Sherman Meet Virginia - Train Lovely Rita Meter Maid - The Beatles Song For Catherine - K's Choice</strike> Pollyanne - Meredith Brooks Maggie M'Gill - The Doors Darlene - Led Zeppelin <strike>Susannah's Pajamas - The Family Think Of Laura - Christopher Cross</strike> EDIT: Same here. |

This is the Errol Garner/Johnny Burke song, right? "Look at me, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree ...". "Misty" is this case is an adjective, not a name. Sample lyrics: "I get misty just holding your hand" "I get misty the moment you're near" etc. [/title Nazi] |

Thank you, Count, for this thread. It has kept my mind well entertained during work, and just thinking of lots of songs I haven't in ages! |
Oh, I almost forgot. "Yoko" is a parasite, not a woman. ;)

Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds
|
Mrs. Robinson - Simon & Garfunkel
I can't believe I forgot about Wendy and Barbara Ann from the Beach Boys. |
Here's a weird coincidence...
In naming songs early this morning, and perusing them again when I woke up earlier, I saw I had named "Gloria" by Laura Branigan. I was reminded that she passed away a while back, and I looked up her website to see how long ago it had been. It's been exactly one year ago today! Weird, huh? |
"Bitch" -Meredith Brooks
...What? |
