At this moment I'd go with "About A Boy" from Badly Drawn Boy. Great from start to finish.

soundtracks are songs from and or inspired by the movie and the score is basically that .

Most of John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith's scores are classic. Riz Ortolani as well.

My favorite scores are probably The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Edward Scissorhands.

As for soundtracks, in addition to those already mentioned, Natural Born Killers is amazing.

My favourite soundtrack is for The Crow. My favourite score is probably for Edward Scissorhands by Danny Elfman.

My favorite is A WALK TO REMEMBER from the movie with Mandy Moore. Now THATS a soundtrack. I guess the Meg Ryan starrer FRENCH KISS would be a close second.

Scores written for the film (afaik):
The Virgin Suicides (Air)
Requiem for a Dream (Clint Mansell & the Kronos Quartet)
Hero (Tan Dun)
Ghost Dog (RZA & various members of the Wu-Tang Clan) [size=1]*This is, regrettably, only available as a Japanese import. The "soundtrack" is awful.
Oldboy (Yeong-Wook Jo)
Mystic River (Clint Eastwood, Kyle Eastwood)
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (Tan Dun & Yo-Yo Ma, CoCo Lee)

Scores containing a mix of an artist's previous work with new work:
Amelie (Yann Tiersen)

Scores with some mix of songs on the soundtrack (or viceversa):
Amores Perros (Control Machete, Celia Cruz, Café Tacuba, Banda Espuela de Oro, Nacha Pop, etc)
Bottle Rocket (Mark Mothersbaugh, The Proclaimers, Oliver Onions, Rene Touzet)
Magnolia (Aimee Mann, Supertramp, etc.)
Rushmore (Mark Mothersbaugh, The Kinks, John Lennon, Creation, etc.)
Lost in Translation (Kevin Shields, Jesus & Mary Chain, Phoenix, etc.)

Soundtracks (of existing songs):
Jackie Brown (Bobby Womack, etc.)
Pulp Fiction (Dusty Springield, Al Green, etc.)
Kill Bill V1/V2

Soundtracks (of all or mostly new songs):
Desperado (Latin Playboys, Dire Straits, Los Lobos, Carlos Santana, Tito & Tarantula, Link Wray, etc.)
Kids (Daniel Johnston, Folk Implosion, Sebadoh, Lo-Down, Slint)

Singles

It might be a little dated, what with all the "grunge" - but it's got some great songs from some of the best '90s bands ever: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Smashing Pumpkins. Not to mention, Paul Westerburg for all the Replacements fans out there, and even a little Jimi Hendrix.

First thing I thought of when I read the subject line.. This would probably be on a list of "albums to take on a desert island"
