Advice Re: The Clash CD

Have a friend who wants to buy a Clash Cd to see if she likes them. Has heard London Calling and Should I Stay or Should I go and thinks she likes the Clash. What is the best disc to reccommend to give her a good taste of their best. Personally, I was thinking of Combat Rock since it is my favorite. But I did not know if any of their compilations or greatest hits discs (which I dont have) would be better for her. She is not as into older punk rock as I am. I have to remind her Good Charlotte is absolutely not punk rock. If I can slowly ease her into the Clash then maybe down the line I can spring Bad Religion or maybe even Fear on her. ;)

I recommend that she get the "London Calling" CD first.

If she likes that, then I recommend that she get the 15 song U.S. version of "The Clash" on CD. (The U.K. version has 14 songs. The two versions have 10 songs in common. I prefer the U.S. version. But some people do prefer the U.K. version.)

There is only one version of "London Calling."

Not true.

They just released a 25th Aniversary edition with a second disc of outakes and a DVD with a film made during the recording of the album. It's MSRP is $25 which may be too steep for a new listener.

Without a doubt London Calling should be the first disc for her. It is their masterpiece. You probably can find a used copy at your local secondhand music store.

I see your point. But those are just extras. The actual album is still the same. I suppose we can agree to disagree on this.

While I understand your joke, I hope the original poster realizes that some people don't even consider that to be a Clash album, and that it's so bad that no one ever even listens to it. Personally, it's the only Clash album that I never bought.

If it's so good why would anyone sell it?

Contrary to the compilation title, London Calling is the essential Clash.

cuz they bought the new special edition action.

I currently have both. Need to sell the first.

London Calling is the best choice for one.

Then the first album, then second, then Combat Rock.

I have a friend interested in The Sex Pistols. What album should she get first?

(this is my sarcastic way of saying "I agree with everyone else, get London Calling")

I'd like to disagree, but I can't.

London Calling is great all the way through--I start listening for one song and have to listen to the whole thing.

That cover is a tribute to this cover:

If she really wants to see if she likes them she should get "The Story of the Clash" it's got some great stuff on it.

My suggestion for the "Sex Pistols".........skip them. There are a ton of much better punk bands out there IMHO the sex pistols just plain sucked. Get a "Black Flag" or a "D.O.A." album instead. Or if it's really politically charged stuff you want then buy every "Dead Kennedys" album you can get your hands on.

Love the Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys have some great stuff. Never got into Black Flag or D.O.A.

I would agree with purchasing London Calling. And if you're interested in the Sex Pistols definitely get Nevermind the Bullocks.

Hopefully you can get your friend into some Bad Religion and Fear also, both great bands. I also really like Black Flag, The Damned, Dead Boys, and Bad Brains.

YESSSS! I will be buried with "Machine Gun Etiquette" and Fear "the Record" is an amazing album as well although I don't suggest digging any deeper into their catalog, another fantastic band is "False Prophets".
