Help identifying a song
I did a Google search with what lyrics I remember, but all that came up was I Never Promised You A Rose Garden. And that is a far cry from the song I'm trying to find.
It is an 80's synth band song - sounds a lot like New Order or When In Rome in its style, and here's some lyrics: Are we united or are we just two... and Smile for the while and let me live (synch-synch) come along and share the goodtimes while we caaaaaaan There's a blow whistle in the song (wheep-wheep) - the kind of whistle a gym coach would have. Any idea? |
it is:
I Beg Your Pardon by Kon Kan I'm stuck in the 80s - what can I say? ------------ There once was a time and there once was a way We had something going and to my dismay Attention to me seemed to drift though I don't know where And when we're alone seems there's nothing to say I bring up a topic and you push it away You say that you do but I think it's just you don't care Why do I feel you're using me Are we an item or are we just two I need some commitments all I ask of you Your lifestyle can change Don't be 'fraid what you think's in store I know what's on your mind you've got lots to lose Your shallow acquaintances what's there to choose You won't get too deep even though I'm worth so much more So think about it carefully Smile for a while and let's be jolly Love shouldn't be so melancholy Come along and share the good times while we can Do you want to hustle? Do you want to salsa? Do you want to hustle? Do you want to salsa? If that's how you want it; that's how it'll be There's no use in trying or making you see That love don't come easy you don't know what it's about To get things together won't take any pain Don't need to see/hear from you ever again From this day on listen but no more Please count me out, and you know what I'm talkin' about Smile for a while and let's be jolly Love shouldn't be so melancholy Come along and share the good times while we can I know now's the time that I went to find something new You know it's your crime that I'm out to find someone too |
...which is a take-off of this early 70's country song by Lynn Anderson:
Rose Garden I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden Along with the sunshine There's gotta be a little rain some time When you take you gotta give so live and let live Or let go oh-whoa-whoa-whoa I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden I could promise you things like big diamond rings But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover So you better think it over Well if sweet-talkin' you could make it come true I would give you the world right now on a silver platter But what would it matter So smile for a while and let's be jolly Love shouldn't be so melancholy Come along and share the good times while we can I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden Along with the sunshine There's gotta be a little rain some time [Brief Instrumental Interlude] I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden I could sing you a tune and promise you the moon But if that's what it takes to hold you I'd just as soon let you go But there's one thing I want you to know You better look before you leap, still waters run deep And there won't always be someone there to pull you out And you know what I'm talkin' about So smile for a while and let's be jolly Love shouldn't be so melancholy Come along and share the good times while we can I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden [Fade] Along with the sunshine There's gotta be a little rain some time (I hope Kon Kan gave songwriting credit where it was due) |

Unfortunately, proper credit is not always issued. I think it's given more nowadays then it previously was, but I can give an example of where it's not given.
I'm a big Violent Femmes fan, and and never got into classic rock too much. Well, I was listening to a radio station one day that was playing some classic rock, and the singer of this one song started singing the following words: "I tell by the way that you swish your walk I can hear by the way that you baby-talk I can tell by the way that you treat your man I can love you baby, it's a crying shame." I instantly recognized the lyrics as being from the Vilolent Femmes song "Gone Daddy Gone" from their first album, released in 1982. I called the radio station and found out the group who sang the song I heard was Foghat, and it was from the 70's. I checked my Femmes CD, and sure enough, they didn't give anyone else credit except the members of Violent Femmes. I was pretty shocked that someone would take that amount of lyrical content so blatantly from a song and not give proper credit. (BTW...I may have not gotten those lyrics exactly right, but that's how I remember them off the top of my head when I was typing it earlier. Apologies to any Foghat fans. :)) |
Never heard that song before... interesting story Infidel ('bout the Femmes).
