There isn't enough liquor in the world to make me agree with that statement.

I'm not saying I disagree, I'm just saying that comment drips with ego...

You recall incorrectly. If you were around 40 years ago, you'll remember that in his "apology" he stated that what he meant was that the Beatles were more popular among youths than even religion, i.e., Jesus. And he was right - and he wasn't bragging - he was genuinely bewildered by this fact.

yeah. I thought everyone knew that. I'll add Cliff Burton. Who knows where Metallica would have gone had he not been killed. Also, I don't think I've seen Elvis in this thread, but I could be wrong.

Exactly. That phrase is always taken out of context and misinterpreted. In the original interview that is the way it has always come across to me. Ego never entered my mind when he said it.

Fair enough, but Bono never would have let a Yoko break up his band, so nana nana boo boo, my guy's better than your guy!

Here's the original quote:

"Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue with that; I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first - rock and roll or Christianity."

Contrary to slop101's assertion, Lennon is obviously not bewildered--he's basically championing the demise of religion (as he often did--see the lyrics to "Imagine"), and implying that the Beatles offers greater worth as a "voice" to the masses than Christianity. As a non-theist myself, I agree 100%, but it's a fairly ballsy, egotistical statement.

He also said:

"Part of me suspects that I'm a loser, and the other part of me thinks I'm God Almighty."

OK, if you ignore the fact that Lennon had a milliion times more talent, creativity, and integrity than Bono.

The first two are debatable (hell, I'll even give you the second one), but your case for the third accusation is weak--Lennon talked a great talk, but I can assure you Bono's efforts have physically saved legions more lives than Lennon could ever claim. You don't have to like Bono to give his humanitarian efforts props. Only Bob Geldof could hold his own with Bono in a comparison of musicians who walk the walk even more than they talk the talk.

Bon Scott.

I actually wouldn't pick Kurt Cobain. He was miserable while he was alive (everytime I met or saw him out and about). If alive though, he had plans to do some more poppy stuff like REM. I know he talked about doing something like that with John from the Fluid.

I'll toss my 2 cents into this argument. How about Janis Joplin? Her last album probably was her best. Where else could she have gone with her voice?

Honorable mentions would have to go to: Jerry Garcia (always wanted to see the Dead in concert), Joey Ramone, John Coltrane.

Tupac or Biggie

Because with either/or still alive maybe we could have been spared Lil Jon and other music passing as rap today. I am a huge R&B/Hip Hop/Rap fan, but even I can admit when some of the "music" coming out is hyper repetitve or just yelling. I enjoy great beats as much as the next guy but give me (good) lyrics that you can hear and understand over the music, anyday.
