That Killers album is pretty decent..but what annoys me is the lead singer and his criticizing of the bravery, not that I give a damn about the bravery...but he's basically saying the ripped them off...when it's so obvious that the killers sound is anything but original.

Perhaps. But that first listen was enough to ensure that I'll never give them a further listen. I hate when bands sound too similar from album to album, much less when new bands IMO sound way too much like existing bands. |
What album did you listen to?
because Muse to me doesn't sound the same from album to album or like Radiohead at all. The only comparison I can think of sometimes his vocal, like on the sing for absolution vocal is kinda yorke like, but what does that have to do with the band as a whole. If anything it sounds more like Jeff Buckley's wail than Thom Yorke's. know I've said all this before, but it's a totally different vibe than Radiohead, and it's not like they haven't been around, not a new band at all, their first album came Showbiz came out in 99..why would they dedicate 6 years and be one of the biggest bands in europe just by copying Radiohead.

What ever there newest one is I assume, as I saw a video for one of the songs on the CD this morning.
Glad you dig them, but just too similar for my tastes and none of the songs grabbed me. And I wasn't saying that Muse sounds the same from album to album. But rather given that I can't even stand when the same band sounds the same from album to album, it really rubs me the wrong way when a band sounds too much like ANOTHER band. You disagree that they sound the same, and that's fine. Everything with music is subjective. But no Muse for me, and I could have saw them live on campus here this past Saturday for like $5 and I still passed. Bands have a hard time making my playlist if I get a bad first impression. :D |

I can't believe no one has mentioned Jet. Each of their songs sounds like an older (and, coincidentally, better) band.

Oh and i had to laugh at the cover of the Kingdom Come album cuz i remember them from my highschool days and no one was a bigger rip-off band than them ever.Good call on that one ;) |

I also remember when my ex played a prank on me by starting a thread in this forum saying "I really like bands like Jet, I think I'm going to ditch all my old music like Pearl Jam for this stuff" something to that degree. Either way, she got some shit for doing that - I'm not saying I'm popular here or anything but that was just wrong.......I don't care what forum it's posted on ;) |
You could probably take 4 or 5 of the main pop-punk bands popular 3 years ago, and interchange them together, ripping each other off.
Some have changed, some have not. |
Franz and the Killers are awesome.
|
The Killers put out the best Duran Duran album of the last ten years. And Franz
Ferdinand, whether you like them or not, are extremely talented. Also, Coldplay and Muse sound about as much as Radiohead as Radiohead sounds like U2. They all sound like each other. It's British Rock. BTW, when is Gang of Four going to be at the TLA? I'd love to see them. My friend hates the Vines because they sound like Nirvana. I thought the last Puddle of Mudd single ("She Hates Me") was a terrible terrible Nirvana wannabe single. Another one of my friends hates Stone Temple Pilots since they were signed just to make a couple of albums that sound like a harder edged Pearl Jam. "Creep" I think is a great example of that. |
You only need to listen to The Killers' non-album tracks to realize that they are awesome. Their B-sides are a bit more original in sound than most of their album tracks. Regardless, I love every one of their tunes.

I think in some cases, bands aren't actually ripping off another but simply following genres. Bands are always influenced by others but in defense of some of these groups (such as the Killers and Coldplay) its not always ripping off. Besides, if a band is influenced by another and makes songs similiar, if they can replicate as well, almost as well, or better I dont mind (see Coldplay's influence on Keane)

Damn I thought Keane was ripping off Travis :P

Every band out there is some form of ripoff of the incredibly talented cavemen from centuries ago who banged some serious rocks and sticks. -wink-
As far as bands putting out albums that sound similar to one another...I don't think I'm necessarily against or for it. As a friend of mine on here suggests, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets could have been a double album. Hell, fans were loving up Metallica for their similar albums, and then the "Black Album" happened, with a slightly more commercial edge. Some core fans were kind of thinking sell-out, and then of course were devastated by Load and Reload. Me? I enjoy them all...I prefer the older stuff, but I do enjoy the new stuff as well. Sometimes bands just wanna try out new stuff. Don't like it? Don't get the album and wait for the next one, maybe they'll go back to the way you prefer. Of course...with a band like Metallica that means waiting another 5 or 6 years for that next album. -wink- |

that's retarded. both albums have completely different atmospheres and are perfect examples of their development between albums, as well as as a band. The two even have their own distinct production qualities, motifs and themes. That's like saying Revolver and Rubber could have been released as a double album. |

I think Velvet Revolver is the WORST ripoff band...they sound NOTHING like Radiohead.....or did I miss the point?
|
Godsmack and Alice in Chains has to be the worst, right?
They got their name from AIC, they sound like a watered down AIC and they started out as an AIC cover band. Also, the song "Voodoo" is totally a rip off of Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom", but that's a different topic. |
