An opera is a musical with no spoken dialogue, the story is told completely through song lyrics. A rock opera is an opera that uses rock music. The Who's "Tommy," for example.

Musical: "My Fair Lady" Some talking, some singing
Opera: "La Boheme"
Rock Opera: "Rent"

Pretty much a made up term but in the strictest sense it's a dramatic story set to rock music. Sometimes begins with an introductory overture (or Underture in the case of Tommy) which introduces prominent musical themes. Many times it has recurring musical passages.

Sorry. As much as I love Queen, this is not a rock opera.

My favorite, mainly because I know one of the guys in the band.
