make me a make me laugh cd
thinking of compiling a cd of music with fun lyrics (bot of course i still must like the tunes). so far, this is what i have:
1) weezer --sweater song 2) flaming lips--she dont use jelly 3) presidents--lump 4) caviar--tangerine speedo probably will add a few bloodhound gang (fav ones are discovery and yummy down on this( and some tenacious D. anything else you guys think are fun? |
What's the criteria? Do joke/novelty songs count (Weird Al, or Father Brian's "Who's In The House", for example)?
I nominate the following "real" songs. The Barenaked Ladies - Be My Yoko On and If I Had A Million Dollars Oasis - She's Electric They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul Todd Snider - Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues Christy Moore - Joxer Goes To Stuttgart Primus - Wynnona's Big Brown Beaver |
A few ranging from getting a chuckle out of me to rolling on the floor laughing.
Beck - Nicotine and Gravy They Might Be Giants - Cowtown, and... well anything by them Barenaked Ladies - Blame It On Me Cake - Stickshifts and Safetybelts Wilco - Passenger Side Le Tigre - Don't Drink Poison, Nanny Nanny Boo Boo Nellie McKay - Won't U Please B Nice, Ding Dong, The Dog Song Butt Trumpet (or Betty Blowtorch) - I'm Ugly And I Don't Know Why |
ooh, forgot about TMBG--love triangle man (or particle man, whatever its called) and istanbul not constantinople. i have a ton of primus. may go for a less well known one (think its called nature boy?).
yeah, i forgot to mention that they should be as close to real songs as possible rather than spoofs. prefer to like them as songs but have the fun lyrics as an added bonus. keep the suggestions coming! |
|
Ween - Push The Little Daisies and Make Em Come Up
Beck - Satan Gave Me A Taco Sublime - Date Rape Offspring - When You're In Prison Green Day - All By Myself Eminem - The Kids |
Kip Addotta's "Wet Dream"
i must warn you though, it's filled with tremendously atrocious puns using fish names. it's basically a story of a guy trying to pick up girls in bars, but uses the names of various fish instead of words. for example, "She said, 'Not tonight, I have a haddock.'" so, if that isn't your sense of humor (see 'lame puns that are so bad you have to laugh') then avoid it like the plague. |
Brad Paisley - Me Neither
William Shatner - Ideal Woman |
|
The Police "On Any Other Day"
|
Fred Lane "The French Toast Man"
|
No one's mentioned the Dead Milkmen? For shame.
Dead Milkmen - "Punk Rock Girl" Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians - "Balloon Man" Brian Wilson/Beach Boys - "Vega-Tables" |
If you want music a wry sense of humor and outstanding hooks try Nick Lowe's Jesus of Cool or as it was called in America, Pure Pop for Now People. My favorites on that album are Nutted by Reality, Little Hitler, Marie Provost and So it Goes.
Also in that vein, Frank Zappa's Apostrophe. The entire first side should fit your bill capped off with Cosmik Debris. "Is that a real poncho or a Sears poncho?" The Offspring are wry as well: Pretty Fly and Self Esteem. Ian Drury's "Wake Up and Make Love to Me" and Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll If it's parody you're after then Weird Al is you man. My favorites are Another One Rides the Bus, Ricky, Pretty Fly for Rabbi and the Saga Begins. More parodies: Psycho Chicken - the Fools She's got Colonel Sanders Thighs She's Got Marty Feldman Eyes - Bruce Babyman Baum |

So many songs by Ween, King Missle, Dead Milkmen, Primus and Bloodhound Gang. And depending on your SOH try some of Albini's stuff from Big Black or Rapeman.

Oh, and "I'm a Boy", "Tattoo", Odorono, and "Mary Anne With the Shaky Hands" by The Who. "Marie Provost" has the greatest sing along chorus in the history of pop music... For the uninitiated in the world of New Wave it goes: She was a winner That became a doggy's dinner. She never meant that much to me Whoa oh oh poor Marie. And for bizarre wit there is also DEVO Q:Are we not men? A: We are DEVO. |
"Pretty When I'm Drunk" and "She Ain't Got No Legs" by Bloodhound Gang are great songs.
"Steve Polychronopolous" "Lonesome Kicker" "At a Medium Pace" "Bad Boyfriend" and "Four Years Old" by Adam Sandler are good choices too. Offspring and Blink 182 (fuck a dog) have lots of great humor as well. |
