I read that Rolling Stone article also and came away thinking that she has gone even further off the deep end than Prince in his very-weird days. All the session musicians talked about contracts that they were to sign stating that regardless of who actually wrote the music and melodies, that Hill would get the sole writer and production credit. It also talked about a "religious guru" who had basically cut her off from the rest of the world. I always thought that The Fugees had good chemistry and that she was a great talent (if a bit overrated...especially around grammy time), but I enjoyed the first Wyclef album much more than I did The Miseducation.

Her talent is wasting away somewhere. Damn shame.

she's a hack and like most hacks, justly disappeared from the mainstream....

Now if only the god awful Black-Eyed Peas would hurry up and join her on the Island of Dr. Moreau.....

Lauryn was no hack. Miseducation is a remarkable album I still listen to frequently and it blows me away. Damn shame she went off the deep end. Maybe in forty years, we'll get to hear her next album (a' la Brian Wilson).

Every one's entitled to their own opinion, especially when it comes to music, where taste is so personal. But Miseducation was widely received as an instant classic. Heck, Time Magazine proclaimed it the greatest hip-hop album of all time the week it came out and picked it as the Album of the Year (as did most publications). Rolling Stone lists it at #312 on their 500 greatest album rankings; Blender ranked it #75 all-time. It was the first hip-hop or rap album to win the top prize at the Grammys (though I still oppose them giving her the "Best New Artist" award, two years after she had been a contender in the Best Album catagory for The Score). Look, none of these things will make everyone like her music, but to call her a "hack", well let's just call that "miseducated".

If you listen to the unplugged CD, she took a drastic musical turn with that new music and from what I read in articles, a lot of executives didn't believe that they could turn that music into a bankable commodity.

But each artist made it sound different, unlike Hill who sings KILLING ME SOFTLY the same way Roberta Flack did. And of course the teen listens to that great song and buys it and thinks HIll is a true artist.
Please tell me that this whole post is sarcastic. It's the only way it makes sense.

Beyond any commercial concerns, I felt it was two discs of homogenous, dull, poorly composed music filtered through an awkward performance. Just excruciating stuff on all fronts.

Hopefully, Hill will wander back into reality and reconnect with the type of musicians and producers she needs to shine.

Actually if program just the music on the Unplugged CDs, it's pretty good stuff...but you can't dance to it.

Artists today have no work ethic. It's make a hit album, collect your $20 million and retire. The Stones made 8 classic albums in the time she made one decent one.

Re: Whatever happened to Lauryn Hill?

Update! This is just nutty.

Lauryn Hill signs a five-song, $1 million deal with Sony to avoid prison
by Marah Eakin April 23, 2013

Lauryn Hill has signed a new five-song, $1 million deal with Sony Music in order to get out of going to prison on tax evasion charges. As previously reported, Hill owes about $504,000 after failing to pay federal taxes on the $1.8 million of income she made between 2005 and 2007. After receiving a new postponement of sentencing, she now has until May 6 to pay off the total and avoid three years in prison—hence Sony attempting to save her with this new deal, much to the court's irritation. As the judge put it in scolding Hill, "This is not someone who stands before the court penniless."

Anyway, if Hill manages to get her shit together and make an entire album, not just those five songs, she’ll obviously make even more money. Though, of course, according to Billboard, Hill has yet to record or write anything as of yet. Still, (potential) new Lauryn Hill songs, made just to get out of prison!

I realize this is almost a decade old post but who ever got a 20 million dollar record deal for a debut album? Record companies have historically raped new artists.

Re: Whatever happened to Lauryn Hill?

Hill wasn't a new artist when her first solo album came out. She was already popular as a member of the Fugees.
