I saw them open for Donavon Frankenreiter last week in Jacksonville, talented lead singer, their violinist is out of control though, a bit unnecessary at a lot of times when he appeared to think that it was his show. The mandolin was an interesting choice of instrumentation though, I enjoyed his playing.

"Showbiz" ***/*****
"Origin of Symmetry" ****/*****
"Absolution" *****/***** (!!!)

Just so you know that other people are watching this thread, I've been listening to Muse - Absolution for a couple of days now and in my opinion, it is pretty bad ass.

The only thing I have to add as far as recommendations go is perhaps Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie?

Check or paypal?

Didn't care for it at all, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I never liked Radiohead either, I'm sure that's why this disc didn't do anything for me as well.

Blue Merle's lead singer sounds exactly like Chris Martin at least half the time. In fact, their single ("Lucky to Know You") could easily be a Coldplay song if not for the fiddle...

The only similarity between the two bands (IMO) are the vocals. Muse are much more epic in sound and production. Sorry you didn't like it. And I do money orders

I got Showbiz in the mail the other day. I remember liking Muscle Museum from a CMJ back in the late 90s, but I just didn't remember the band's name.

So far, I'm enjoying Showbiz. It's a bit rough around the edges, but I can tell that it will grow on me.

Still waiting for the other two...

...cranks up the anticipation.

You know, it's funny that the OP hasn't chimed in again. This is one of my favorite threads in a long time, and it was just a throwaway drive-by post from a newbie!

Another band in the same mold, that I don't think has been brought up yet is The Doves. Their last album, The Last Broadcast is amazing, and they just released an exquisite new album this week. Check 'em out!

Blue Merle

as pre-music for a film I saw last Saturday, and my friend and I were like he sounds exactly and I mean exactly like Chris Martin.

Loving all this Muse attention. They certainly deserve it. Even though I discovered them very late in their career (Nov '04), "Absolution" has been in my player at least once a day since I stubled upon this great (great) band. That album has to be in my all-time top 5 from any group.

I like this tread too. Bought Starsailor and Travis upon suggestion. Very, very pleased.

Their new album is fantastic. Can't stop listening to it. Black and White Town is just about the best single I've heard from any band in a long time.

I like the album for the most part, but I really can't stand how it kind of peters out at the end.

My take after listening to all three Muse albums for a few days...

Showbiz: ****
Origin of Symmetry: ***
Absolution: *****

Thanks for the recommendation.

So far, from this thread, I love Muse, Aqualung, and Athlete (in that order). I'm lukewarm about Travis (a few brilliant songs though), Starsailor, and the Doves.

hey chess,

I see you've been gettin some good recommendations on here! I agree with you about starsailor...i've had their first album for years, and was excited to hear the new one...but what I've heard I don't like. Which sucks, cause I love their first one!

If you like Muse (i'm going to see them on 4/24!!!), you should check out the band Ours. Their cd "Distorted Lullaby" is excellent. It sounds a whole lot like the cd "absolution" by Muse. The singer is even very similar, sounding a bit more like Jeff Buckley though IMO. ANyway, I think you'd dig that cd by Ours.

I'm going to recommend the new Embrace album, "Out of Nothing" It's coldplay-esque. The album isn't out in the US yet but I have the import and I've been playing their single "Ashes" almost continuously on Itunes now.

Bringing back this thread to give a shout out for the band Boxer Rebellion. They have a new album called "Exits" that sounds like a cross between Interpol and Coldplay. This is a very good album worth looking into.... just keep staring at your shoes and follow the noise.

IMO I find the new album from British Sea Power to be more consistent and enjoyable than the first.
