This recent thread HERE gave me the idea for this thread.

So, there are artists that we like that might not enjoy the same kind of critical acclaim that others do. You know the kind that I mean. The ones that would cause people to mock you endlessly. The ones that, if you were caught blasting a song very loudly in your car, you'd rather veer off the road into a ditch instead of being seen listening to it.

Well, this thread is immune to such ridicule. Feel free to list artists, songs, albums, etc.. that, be it here or in the real world, you'd be made to feel embarassed for listening to. If you want to add some comments to justify yourself, feel free. I know it's sometimes hard to admit these things, but know that it's NOT necessary to do so.

I'll start it off...

• I like listening to Neil Diamond's "the Jazz Singer" soundtrack.
  
• I like mid-to-late 70s Barry Manilow [cue the Angel jokes] and think that his "Weekend In New England" is one of THE best ballads recorded. Ever.
  
• I like listening to Disco. Donna Summer, the Village People, etc.

I have a LOT more, but I don't want to hog up the entire thread. I'll pop in every now and then with more..

Well, I posted it in the other thread, and even though I'm not at all ashamed to say it, I'll say it again in the spirit of openness.

I like Smashmouth's "All Star."
I like the Dixie Chicks.
I like classical music.

And, yeah, I was a huge fan of the "The Jazz Singer" soundtrack when I was about 12 or so. I don't know if I'd still like it now as I haven't heard it for so long, but I still get a smile when I think of Neil singing... "TO-DAY!"

Most Disco music. If I were to play it with friends I would get the "gay" comments. Not that I care in the long run, but I don't like being the odd man out! :( Damn you friends, damn you!

I actually have this song I had to download cause I can't find it on any cd that isn't like 25-30+ bucks that is called <b>You + Me = Love</b> and it is like a 10 minute disco song. It is from the same people who did that Motown song <b>Smiling Faces Sometimes</b> (I think that is the name of the song). :up:

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I'm not sure the Eurymthics would count either.

But, then again, I had no idea it wasn't cool to listen to Maroon 5..

And, SAShepherd, while there are song on the Jazz Singer soundtrack that I have no problem skipping, "Hello Again", "Love On the Rocks" and "Songs Of Life" always catch my interest.

I used to hide my love for his 80's cheese, but now I loudly and proudly rock it. I get a lot of funny looks and lame comments from people at first, but they usually end up saying he does kick ass.

Of course, they could just be saying that to make me feel better.

I'm not ashamed of any of the music I like and couldn't give 2 shits if someone thought I was less cool because of it. I don't know what to confess to here since I don't really know what would be considered lame here.

As a young black male who loves rock, nearly all of my music was considered "guilty pleasure" through the first 3 years of high school. I stopped caring my senior year and now in college, I care less and it matters less to others. That said, I consider none of my music guilty pleasure anymore.

However, I realize the highly esteemed bands and the bashed ones. Here are the bands or songs I like that many dont here.

Linkin Park- Absolutely LOVE them, one of if not my favorite group. I find myself being the resident LP defender on this board and I dont mind. Ive come to realize why some dont like them now whereas before I thought whoever didnt was crazy. I think what I look for in music and enjoy somewhat differs with many. The things many dont like with LP (lyrical content, polished sound, rapping) are things that either I like or dont bother me.

Thats it, o yea I seem to like every Blink 182 song I hear on the radio off of their new album.Unfortunately, when I preveiw the rest of the album I dont like it.I will still end up getting it tho as I didnt like the preview of Andre 3000s album but loved it once I bought it. I also like the following songs: Hilary Duff "Let the Rain fall down", Britney Spears "Toxic",JLo "Waiting for Tonight", Avril Lagvigne "Losing My Grip" amongst other songs by Backstreet Boys, NSync, Maroon 5 et al.

Yeah, I'm a college student probably the only one in the building with a Elvis CD. I also like classical music but I don't hide that fact.

Hhhm. Around these here parts, Elvis is KING. I am a college student and a lot of people I know love Elvis's music.

The Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack. I recognize how corny Styx is, but I'll still play the hell out of their greatest hits album.

As gmal's sister, I'll ditto what he said. During some of my younger years, I would hide my love for all music outside of my R&B/rap demographic - then everything I listened to was considered a guilty pleasure.

Now, what I listen to is what I listen to -- I truly don't care what anyone thinks. Peer pressure has little influence on a 33 year-old. And as the creator of the thread Rogue is referencing, I'll post it here or anywhere else for that matter. ;)

That being said I truly enjoy the boy bands & pop queens - N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, Brittney, Christina A.. As well as the ballad artists such as Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Josh Groban.

I've got most topped here... Air Supply! :D

I have pretty much every Neil Diamond album ever made (his 12 Greatest Hits was my very first album, ever). I also love Styx. But the one artist I'm a big fan of, which seems to constantly be referenced as a musical embarrassment is Corey Hart. Damn it, I like him, and I really don't understand the negativity toward him. At least he wrote and performed his own music.

I'd say some dance music/re-mixes-Oakenfold, trance etc.. (But I'm allowed since I'm gay ;) )

I've never been ashamed to say I listen to metal (not hair metal) Slayer, Maiden etc.. back in the day I was teased by some of the trendy kids, but they respected me for not conforming. Nowadays I still love it, and some of my gay friends don't get it (can't please everyone huh?) and it appears that all the hot topic kids are buying the old school T-shirts now to be cool, go figure. It's all good.

As a guy who was a teen during the 1976 punk explosion, and who had to constantly explain to my friends why I didn't like Led Zeppelin, I've been trying to teach my 13-year-old daughter to always "like what you like".

I think it's working, too.

I don't really have any. I do feel a little silly about how much I like early Yes (Close to the Edge for example) because it seems like pretty nerdy stuff. However, I'm a nerd, so I'm OK with that.
