The rush to release greatest hits compilations is indepedent of a musical artist's shelf life, from a forty-plus career like Mr. Zimmerman's to the likely <10 years of Ms. Duff. Even the Spin Doctors have a greatest hits album.

Hell, even the Spin Doctors had six albums before their greatest hits disc. [Well, technically four since two were live...]

This of course is no longer necessary with today's music industry where it takes 3 years to make an album and all singles are on the album.

Duff's 'Most Wanted' To Boast New Songs By Barry A. Jeckell, N.Y.
Although she's only two non-holiday albums into her career, Hilary Duff is readying a best-of set for a late summer release. The singer/actress has recorded four new songs for "Most Wanted," three of which will appear on a standard release, while the fourth will be bonus inclusion on a deluxe package. Both versions of the disc will be released Aug. 16 by Hollywood Records.
At deadline, only first single "Wake Up" could be confirmed as one of the new "Most Wanted" tracks. The song, which will be supported with a music video to be directed by Marc Webb (the Used, My Chemical Romance), was co-written and co-produced by Good Charlotte's Joel and Benji Madden and Goldfinger singer/guitarist John Feldmann.
Joel Madden, who is Duff's current boyfriend, also had a hand in two of the other three new songs. Although the full track list for "Most Wanted" is not yet etched in stone, fans can expect such tracks as "So Yesterday," "Why Not," "Come Clean" and "Fly" to be included.
Duff began her recording career with the 2002 Buena Vista holiday set "Santa Claus Lane." Her proper debut, 2003's "Metamorphosis," reached No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 3.7 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Last year's "Hilary Duff" bowed at No. 2 on the chart and has sold 1.5 million.
The live debut of "Wake Up" will take place Friday (June 17) during Duff's summer concert series performance on NBC's "Today" morning show. That and a same-day appearance on the syndicated show "Live With Regis & Kelly" coincide with the opening of her latest film, "The Perfect Man" (co-starring Heather Locklear and Chris Noth) in U.S. theaters.
Duff recently wrapped filming on "Material Girl" with older sister Haylie Duff. Before heading out on a summer concert tour, she'll complete filming a reprise of her role in the sequel to 2003's "Cheaper by the Dozen."
Her Still Most Wanted tour is set to run from a July 12 show in Los Angeles through a Sept. 3 gig in Syracuse, N.Y., and break for a few weeks before closing Sept. 25 in Puyallup, Wash., three days before her 18th birthday.
In the midst of the run she'll appear Aug. 15 on NBC's "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," Aug. 17 on Fox broadcast of the annual Teen Choice Awards and make an Aug. 18 return to "Today."

Great news! One of the few actual 'artists' out there today! She has still failed to dissapoint. She is what every female singer should try to aspire to.
With such a vast and diverse catalogue of songs, it's about time for a Greatest Hits.
Hillary, I salute you! (Jokes aside, I like her 100 times more than Lohan, Spears, Aguilera, or any of the other slutty female singers out there).

From billboard.com:The new songs that will appear on Hilary Duff's upcoming "Most Wanted" collection of remixed and remastered songs have been confirmed. As previously reported, three of them will appear on one version of the set, due Aug. 16 via Hollywood, while a "collector's signature edition" will boast four.
In addition to the single "Wake Up," which was serviced to U.S. radio outlets for airplay consideration this week, the new songs are "Beat of My Heart," "Break My Heart" and "Supergirl," the latter of which is exclusive to the deluxe edition of the compilation. Several of the songs were co-written with Good Charlotte's Joel Madden, Duff's boyfriend.
Duff will be on hand Friday (July 15) to premiere the Marc Webb-directed video for "Wake Up" on MTV's "Total Request Live." It will also be incorporated into the Disney Channel's "Disney 50th 411" programming through the balance of the summer.
Here is the "Most Wanted" track list:
Duff Is 'Most Wanted' On Billboard Album Chart By Margo Whitmire, L.A.
Pop sensation Hilary Duff tops The Billboard 200 this week with a greatest hits collection, despite having only released two studio albums. "Most Wanted" (Hollywood) sold 208,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, sending Staind's "Chapter V" (Elektra/Atlantic) to No. 7 with a 59% fall to 76,000 after its chart-topping debut last week.
"Wanted" includes remastered and remixed versions of Duff hits like "So Yesterday" and "Metamorphosis," along with four new tracks, some of which the singer co-wrote with boyfriend Joel Madden of Good Charlotte. New single "Wake Up" is the No. 1 most-played track on Radio Disney.
This is the second Billboard 200 No. 1 for Duff, who also topped the chart with 2003's "Metamorphosis." The album started with 204,000 units and has sold 3.7 million so far.
At No. 2, Brad Paisley's "Time Well Wasted" (Arista Nashville) earns the country artist his highest spot on the big chart and his best sales week ever with 193,000. Though this is his second No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart, his previous Billboard 200 high was with "Mud on the Tires" in 2003, which opened at No. 8 with 86,000 copies and has sold 2 million to date.

The 19th installment of the "NOW! That's What I Call Music" series (EMI Group/Universal/Sony BMG/Zomba/Capitol) falls 2-4 with a 33% drop to 108,000.
Nebraska-reared quintet 311 arrives at No. 5 with "Don't Tread on Me" (Volcano), which starts with 91,000. The group's highest-charting set to date remains 1997's "Transistor" (Capricorn) with a No. 4 peak, while its self-titled project in 1995 holds best-selling honors with a 2.8 million to-date total.
The Black Eyed Peas take up the sixth slot, falling one place with "Monkey Business" (A&M/Interscope) despite a 10% boost to 82,000 units.

Nashville) falls 3-8 with a 41% slide to 73,000; Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" (RCA) holds at No. 9 for a third week with a 10% jump to 62,000; and Young Jeezy's "Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101" (Def Jam) drops 6-10 with a 15% slump to 61,000 copies.
Last week's release of a limited edition of the Killers' "Hot Fuss" (Island), which includes three bonus track not previously available in the U.S., propels the album 29-11 with an 88% boost to 60,000 units.
Lava newcomers the Click Five bow at No. 15 with "Greetings From Imrie House." The Berklee College alums' debut sold 52,000 units with the help of first single, "Just the Girl," which is climbing both the Billboard Pop 100 and Hot 100.
Other notable debuts include Taproot's "Blue-Sky Research" (Atlantic, No. 33), Silverstein's "Discovering the Waterfront" (Victory, No. 34) and Duff labelmates Aly & AJ's "Into the Rush" (No. 36).
