I REALLY like Yahwe. What does it mean? (The actual word)

It's Hebrew for Jehovah, or the Lord or Creator. In other words, God.

Dalvin 12-07-04 07:30 PM

Mr. Salty is correct. Most of what Bono says in that song is very similar to what Jesus was teaching his disciples about their fellow brethren(i.e. "Take this hand...don't make a fist"). The song resonates so well, because, admit it or not, the way the world is right now....we all could all use a little Yahweh.

SunMonkey 12-07-04 10:19 PM

Great album. Anyone have tour information yet?

Filmmaker 12-08-04 06:01 PM

Actually, from a certain point of view, the reason the world is the way it is right now is because we've all had a little too much Yahweh (or Allah, or whatever other name you want to spin him with)...just a little secular skepticism from someone more than a little terrified of the "my god is better than your god" one-upmanship currently taking place between the West and Mideast right now...great song all the way, though, philisophical differences regarding the existence of dieties notwithstanding...

Kerborus 12-08-04 06:47 PM

And with a little skepticism for the 'God makes everything in the world evil' crowd, comes a reminder that like all evil men in the world who do bad things, those who manipulate a religion or the name of God for their own greed or power, do not represent all religious people or God.

U2 knows this and lives it as do many people I know. If everyone lived the philosophy (God or no God), we wouldn't have the problems we have today.

Filmmaker 12-09-04 11:10 AM

Thanks for the company line, Kerborus, I've heard it a million times before, but I can find plenty of instances of God-initiated and God-sanctioned hate, vengeance, pain-infliction and hypocricy in the Bible and the Koran and supposedly, they represent the Word of God, so though many philosophical gems can be found in Christianity and other such faiths, there's plenty to counter your assertions as to any philosophical or moral perfection...not to get us too off-topic; just let it be said that I've always thought the greatest virtue to U2's faith is that it rests on a foundation of pure humanism, which is becoming anathema more and more to the bulk of so-called believers I come across either in person or in the media...

SunMonkey 12-09-04 08:40 PM

Umm... yeah. Like I was saying, any tour information yet?

Setzer 12-10-04 12:33 AM

March 2005 in Miami is where it kicks off.....I think.

Filmmaker 12-10-04 03:09 PM

Tickets aren't up for sale yet, if that's what you're asking, but if you regularly check u2.com and/or ticketmaster.com, I'm sure you'll find out the minute that they do...

GatorDeb 12-10-04 10:18 PM

Now that you mention it, I can see where the Yaweh came from. In Judaism, though, you're taught not to pronounce it that way out of respect for G-d. Interesting.

LorenzoL 12-11-04 07:32 AM

I guess I'm kind of late but I bought the CD and I'm very impressed with it. Just waiting for tour information and I'm all set.

Kerborus 12-11-04 07:11 PM

Filmaker, evil deeds come from evil men. Whatever their excuse, it is MAN that performs evil deeds. Take that as my 'company line' and remember it the next time you do something not so good. It's your inherant evil nature that makes you do bad stuff, not religion.

And so... (from Interference.com)

U2 will begin a ten month world tour on March 1st in the US, manager Paul McGuinness has told U2.Com.

The band are set to play 115 shows beginning in Florida in the Spring, reaching Europe in June, heading back to North America in the Autumn before finishing up in Japan and Australia in November and December.

In an interview with U2.Com, Paul McGuinness revealed that two different productions were underway for the tour as it would open indoors in the US and then play outdoors through the summer in Europe. ‘Willie Williams and Mark Fisher are already at work on designing the shows.’

Some dates and venues are still being finalized - no official announcement will be made until the New Year .

Filmmaker 12-14-04 06:15 PM

Interesting poetry, Kerborus, but it utterly fails to address my point...unless you're suggesting that the Bible (Koran, etc.) does NOT represent the actual Word of God. If so, then we are in agreement. If not, then you answered my apple with an orange.

Kerborus 12-15-04 11:22 PM

Why so flippant in your retorts? Interesting poetry or I've heard it all before doesn't speak to your defense.

You claim that God is the cause of all evils in the world and you point to some wars over religion. I postulate that any war over religion was at best a mask for greedy men out for their own power and wealth.

So we see it differently. You say men fight and kill in the name of God, while I say that men fight and die for their own personal gain (wealth, power) and if it serves their need, uses God or politics or whatever as a justification.

In the end, whether you believe in a God or not, if people followed the basic tenants of religion which in general speaks of doing unto others as they do unto you and preach love, forgiveness and understanding, then you would understand Bono's meaning in Yahweh and the original poster's intent. What is wrong with believing this? Why does it offend you so?

As it stands, you appear very small and you tend to lash out at those who believe in God, because it makes you feel better as you have nothing to look forward to other than dissolving into nothingness. Not sure why you bring up the bible and the koran since we were never discussing it, but now that you do, your ignorance on the subject rears it's head. Does it really matter to you if they are word of God or not? Isn't the basic principle inside what's really important. Isn't the fact that there is a God make you feel good? And there is a God, there is no doubt - we are all here and that is proof enough that someone or something made us, whether the Christian God or some mathematical equation God or whatever. You seem to be too hung up on the details.

And my point before was that you were implying that religion caused wars and my retort was to show you that evil men and their nature cause wars. Do you think Osama Bin Ladin really cares about religion? If he did, why hasn't he martyred himself by stepping forward? He'd gladly send other ignorant youths who have no way of knowing any other way due to his manipulation to die, but he won't do it himself. He's a hypocrite.

And when you do something wrong personally, did religion cause that? Or is that just proof that man is inherantly greedy, selfish, etc. and does bad things due to their own choices?

Bono speaks of what his belief can do for the world and I think if anyone is missing the point here, it is you my friend.

Hollowgen 12-16-04 03:09 AM

what

Mr. Salty 12-16-04 06:30 AM

Here's a thought: Why not take the religious pissing match to its own thread and let this one stay on topic so it doesn't get closed?

Kerborus 12-16-04 10:56 AM

I think it's a valid discussion about the song Yahweh and what it means, Mr. Salty Sir!

Filmmaker 12-16-04 03:26 PM

Kerborus, Mr. Salty's got a point--discussion of the meaning of "Yahweh" is one thing, but turning this thread into "Theology Online" is another. I'll choose to simply avoid the bulk of your post because it's not on target with my point, which I'll reiterate simply. If you believe that the Bible (as an American, chances are your God will be found in it, rather than the Koran or any other document, but please advise me if my assumption is incorrect) is the Word of God, then I find ample evidence of God-initiated and God-sanctioned hate, vengeance, pain-infliction and hypocricy. In other words, not Man-initiated or Man-sanctioned, but practice from God himself. That it my sole point--your God, as evidenced by his actions in the Bible, is oftentimes as evil, corrupted, morally questionable, egotistical and hypocritical as you accuse us a s humans of being. Not even addressing the question of God's existence (which I highly inclined to disbelieve), if we assume for the sake of argument that he does, then the Bible fails to make a compelling and consistent case as to why he's worth worshipping.

P.S.: Not to put too fine a point on it but the comment, "You seem to be too hung up on the details", is one of the more delicious defenses I encounter from theists. It sounds suspiciously close to "religion/God is the answer to everything, as long as you don't scratch the surface or dig too deep". If your beliefs can't hold up to scrutiny of the details, then perhaps they're built on a foundation of tissue.

If only that were the case here. The last time the religious discussion had anything to do with the song "Yahweh" was your post of Dec. 8. Since then, the discussion has been about religion itself, which is a topic for its own thread.

Filmmaker 12-16-04 07:42 PM

Agreed, Mr. Salty, and I can (and should) let it drop. I apologize for my contributions to the off-topicking (to coin an invented word), but Kerborus' brand of (IMO) unthinking theistic propaganda that has 2,000+ years to be proven valid as both/either fact and/or philosophical theory and uniformly failed tends to rankle me...we can return to the rightful discussion of the hour--The best album of 2004!

Kerborus 12-16-04 09:49 PM

I agree with Filmaker, the U2 album is the greatest album of the hour. Now we can return this post to the gobs of people who have been posting, besides the three of us. Mr. Salty can now rest easy and police other dead threads.

atlantamoi 03-07-05 01:49 PM

I FINALLY picked this up over the weekend. Only because I found it used for $5.00. I've had some very negative things to say about U2 since ATYCLB, but I'll have to admit that I was kind of surprised how much I like Atomic. I like every song except for the last two. I still don't think this pup comes close to U2's best recordings, but I'm happy with it.

'HOW TO RE-ASSEMBLE AN ATOMIC BOMB'

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb comes the 'shadow' album, a collection of 10 songs titled How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb which includes new and unreleased songs discovered in the archive of the original album recording sessions, available from 22nd November.

Further celebrating the anniversary of this seminal album, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb has now been remastered for the first time, a process which saw the band go back to the vault to revisit those early '00s recording sessions, a period of intense creativity for U2 in the studio, as well as a time of deep personal and artistic reflection following the passing of Bono's father Bob in 2001. This special 20th anniversary edition – out 22nd November - will include the bonus track 'Fast Cars'. See below for a complete list of formats.

How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (Re-Assemble Edition) – featuring both How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb + How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb - will be available as a dual digital release on 22nd November.

Here's The Edge speaking on How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb.

"The sessions for 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' were such a creative period for the band, we were exploring so many song ideas in the studio. We were inspired to revisit our early music influences, and it was a time of deep personal introspection for Bono who was attempting to process - dismantle - the death of his father.

For this anniversary edition I went into my personal archive to see if there were any unreleased gems and I hit the jackpot. We chose ten that really spoke to us. Although at the time we left these songs to one side, with the benefit of hindsight we recognize that our initial instincts about them being contenders for the album were right, we were onto something.

What you're getting on this shadow album is that raw energy of discovery, the visceral impact of the music, a sonic narrative, a moment in time, the exploration and interaction of four musicians playing together in a room… this is the pure U2 drop.

How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb is a collection of ten songs taken from the original recording sessions for 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb', recently rediscovered in the band's archive and now released for the first time as a standalone album.

This shadow album includes four new, never-before-heard or previously released songs - 'Treason', 'Evidence Of Life', 'Country Mile' and 'Happiness'; plus a song called 'Luckiest Man In The World' - familiar to many of you under its working title 'Mercy', an early demo of which was leaked online almost 20 years ago - which now gets its official release; as well as five newly remastered songs - 'Picture Of You (X+W)', 'Don't Wanna See You Smile', 'Are We Gonna Wait Forever?', 'Theme From The Batman' and 'All Because Of You 2' - all collected together for the first time to mark the 20th anniversary of 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb'.
