U2 Frontman Bono Finds His Missing Lyrics From 1981

PORTLAND, Ore. - A long-lost briefcase full of notes and lyrics that were intended for the 1981 U2 album "October" has been returned, 23 years after it was stolen at a Portland concert.
U2 frontman Bono made the announcement Wednesday during an appearance before the World Affairs Council of Oregon, saying the returned notes were "an act of grace."
Bono had to rewrite the "October" lyrics in the studio, and band members called it their worst recording experience. Though the record was generally well-received, it didn't earn the praise of the band's debut album, "Boy," or third album, "War."
The briefcase was returned by Cindy Harris, 44, who said she found it in the attic of a rental home in Tacoma, Wash., in 1981. She said she did not know the notes had been stolen until many years later, and then she had no idea how to reach the band.
Her friend Danielle Rheaume spent much of the past year contacting U2's management.
According to "Into the Heart," a book of stories about U2 songs, the briefcase was stolen by some women who joined the band backstage at a now-defunct Portland nightclub.
The band returned to Portland a few years after the theft and Bono asked the audience if anyone knew about the briefcase. He repeated the question when the band played at the Rose Garden arena in 2001.

That's hilarious. IMO the missing lyrics fiasco made October a stronger album. Since it's release it has always been my favorite U2 album.

Anyone know anymore of the history of this story. Particularly, did Bono feel the lyrics he rewrote were the equal of what was lost? For instance, would a recording of the lost lyrics be substanially different from the October album?

Nice to hear they were returned.
I wonder if U2 will consider recording the album using the returned lyrics. It would be interesting to hear how it would compare to the released album using the re-written lyrics.

Did you look at the date when they were stolen?

To tell you the truth, I had my doubts about the whole "stolen briefcase" story for a long time. Just seemed like one of those urban legends that U2 fans would tell but that you could never really know if it was true. Well, guess I was wrong.

two things
I'm glad the story specifies 'U2 frontman Bono' as I didn't want to confuse this with all the other many Bonos out there in the vast world
anyone currently using the lyrics 'yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah' and 'uno, dos, tres, catorce' needs to find all the lost lyrics he can

There is no doubt in my mind that as U2 fades away they will re-release October with Bono doing the original lyrics. Anything to bleed fans dry.
That being said, bring on the Nirvana box set!!!

i feel really awkward watching U2 in the latest itunes commercial. it's hard to continue to like a band that is so in love with themselves, and money.

There is so little music worth buying these days I'm not about to boycott a band that has been making great music for 20+ years just because they're in a commercial. And at least iPod has something to do with music. It would suck if they were in a Pepsi commercial.

There are at least three threads in various areas of DVD Talk discussing the relative merits of the words "yeah" and "catorce." How anyone can get so bent out of shape about seven seconds of a song is beyond me. For fuck's sake, let it go.

Nothing wrong with promoting your new song and upcoming album release.
